Wandering around Fitzrovia in the first few hours of a May morning, snapping photo after photo of the beloved BT Tower. One of my favorite towers in the world (along with all the planet’s other mid-20th century telecom broadcast structures). Still looking spectacular as ever, despite its disrobing at the beginning of the decade, when the defunct aerials were removed from the midsection—tempting to try to stretch that into a Van Gogh-losing-ears metaphor but anyway, the timelessness of the Post Office Tower’s vintage futurism is just immaculate. There’s some excellent period newsreels online of when Post Office Tower opened. Eric Bradford, architect, 1963-68. Photos May 2019 Bauzeitgeist.
