Discontent Dharma
Birth and childhood create the tension between our naturalness and our ego.
From the moment we enter school and onward, the society and the people are trying to make sense of us. They want to know who and what we are–in terms of our identity.
What is our gender and how do we express it? What are our hobbies and passions and interests? What is our ambition? What is our college, our major, our career, our next steps? Who is our significant other and when will we have children? How are the kids doing? How are you?
The discomfort created by these expectations urges us toward a sense of security. We want to define ourselves so that we can be known–by ourselves and by others.
If we are not happy with those definitions, we suffer. We feel limited. If we are content with those definitions, we are momentarily okay. Until we start desiring more and better. Or until things change.
The moment we feel comfortable with our ego, with our identities and self-definitions, we become slaves. It is our tendency to villainize discomfort instead of the ego that causes us to seek comfort or distraction.
Rather, that discomfort itself is a hidden blessing, a fuel source for awakening. The ego shouldn’t be comfortable. It should be seen and known to be what it really is: a hassle, a scam.
Only then will a way out be sought in sincerity. There is no good ego, just as there is no good time to be ignorant.
Do not be content with it.
