I do not always check to approve of every artist I reblog from. If I did, I'd get no utmv art because of the sheer amount of proshippers in that community 🤢 if someone is a proshipper and I reblogged from them, it was an accident and I would love a heads up if you notice and tell me.
This scene was so awkward and came out of nowhere. They could make out sloppily in front of jax's wandering corpse and it would have felt just as jarring.
Im not a great character analyst, but the notion of Douma being completely incapable of feeling emotions is not a proper description of his character. it was stated in the manga, yes, and Douma himself says that he doesn't feel anything. but just because that's what it's stated to be on the surface doesn't make it the only explanation, especially whenever his childhood environment is brought up. possible spoilers and somewhat long
there's a difference between devoid of all and any emotion and LACKING the understanding of how to express them from suppression and trauma can lead to something like apathy.
Douma wasn't given the opportunity to feel things for himself and learn how to process his own emotions while consistently having to do that for others his entire life. He couldn't let his own emotions or biases interfere and learned to give fake emotional responses when it was needed to seem authentic, which eventually became a part of his actual personality. Children not being able to express themselves or learning that their emotions should be hidden is detrimental to their development, and it leads to problems later on. that's the more proper general explanation for Doumas character.
He says a few times that his reasoning for being born was to help others and make them happy, that kind of wording was mostly definitely implanted in his head as a child if his parents made an entire cult surrounding his "divinity" (his eyes). It's not a child's dream to be treated like a higher power that prevents you from being a child. He's never heard the voice of a God, yet continuing to play along as if he really had a choice in not doing so. he doesn't truly care about the people coming to him or their problems. the twisted mindset forced on him as a child, shaped how he viewed the world around him and made him a staunch atheist.
it's unclear why he continued to run his cult well after his parents died, but that can also be the product of abuse. what else did he know besides helping others by that point? what else could he do? so you stick with what's familiar. Him becoming a demon likely twisted him further since he needed blood to survive, his goal wasn't even strength, it was still to just "help" his suffering followers in a more depraved way.
Douma is clearly capable of wants or desires, even if it's for a selfish benefit. He's capable of feeling happiness in a way that's devoid of general understanding, considering he's a demon. he didn't feel sad, scared, or angry about his death, as the result never needing to express it. he didn't know how to feel it when the time came for it to be understandable.
when you're forced into a position where you can't let your own emotions get in the way, you shove it down. eventually it becomes easier to not express it, and then at some point, you're so used to not expressing it you'll LACK the capability of feeling something, unless it's an extremely strong emotional reaction. when you do feel something for the first time, it's exasperated by confusion due to the unfamiliarity of what you're feeling. That's the main point I'd make for his confession to Shinobu. it is confirmed he felt love for her, but a warped infatuation mixed with confusion is more likely to his feelings
The confusion is apparent, with him even questioning his own atheist beliefs. he's feeling ONE thing that's unfamiliar, and it causes him to question the reality he's lived in for centuries.
a significant problem arises when people associate him with anti-social personality disorder because he's "pure evil" and enjoys killing others, and not because of his trauma. I'm sure it's understandable where that problem comes from lumping in his fictional actions to a real-life mental disorder that's heavily stigmatized. it's not association because it makes sense to his personality or any actual symptoms of that disorder, it's association because of the "emotionless evil scary murderer" stereotype with ASPD (or "sociopath" I've also seen used, which is outdated for that reason).
Yes, Douma has symptoms of aspd like apathy, impulsivity, manipulation and lying for personal gain, a sense of superiority, and hostility with no remorse. the beginning of his life, lying, manipulation, and superiority, he learned because he was made to. the suppression of emotions and trauma likely led to his apathy. his hostility ONLY came directly from being a demon, and yet the hostile aspect of his character is what's focused on the most for some people to say he has ASPD. I'm not denouncing that he shows traits of ASPD entirely, but if it wasn't clear, I'm saying the popular reasoning for it is distasteful.
so yeah, summing it up, Douma isn't completely emotionless and pure evil. He just lacks the understanding of how he's supposed to express his true feelings due to his upbringing as a forced cult leader.
