Hey if you have a chronically ill friend who is housebound, I'd like to take this opportunity to remind you to make contact with them. See if you can visit them (offer to sit in their room with them, tell them they don't need to worry about how clean it is), offer to bring them a meal or help with tasks they can't do themself, offer to go with them to a doctor's appointment, if they can leave the house sometimes let them know that the next time they have the energy they're welcome to come lie on your couch.

Housebound people feel free to add your own input, my housebound friend was able to visit recently and I was reminded of how isolating it can be for her. I love you and you deserve to get to see people in ways that don't hurt you more than they have to.

& honestly there's no debate to be had the zendaya earrings are orders of magnitude worse than kim kardashian wearing that marilyn dress. yes that piece was a one of a kind unique textile made so specifically for marilyn monroe she had to be sewn into it. at the end of the day it was a ~70 year old usamerican cultural artefact being repurposed by an american for an american cultural event and everyone involved knows exactly where the dress came from + what happened to it + where it went afterwards. zendaya is wearing the looted (or forged) cultural heritage of a people her government is currently bombing & whose lives they have been deliberately making unliveable for decades to a movie premiere that has fuck all to do with iran. we don't know where those discs came from where they were found or by whom & we never will. The ancient world was full of textile masterpieces we can only imagine… but most of them have rotted away. So few of them have come down to us in these days that we think of metal and stone as the primary mediums for the oldest artworks. But there were tapestries and fabric work that would have rivaled the finest wrought gold and iron and the first cave paintings.

This is a incredibly rare find. A ball of yarn made from stinging nettle fibers in the Late Neolithic (5900 years old) in what’s now Marin-Epagnier in Switzerland. The thread has been preserved by being carbonized. Look at how much thread that is! And how fine and even it is spun! The skill going into this is absolutely incredible. Imagine the incredible textile work that must’ve been made with that. For a reference here’s a ball of nettle yarn I managed to make with a drop spindle. That took me 300 hours of work.

For the folks curious about templates, these are the shapes I cut from cardboard. I added a couple little pieces of cereal box cardboard as structural support in various points, like the bridge of the nose and behind the beak. Also, I ended up cutting the forehead piece a little smaller, which I marked on the paper, but I kept the template size in case you want to see how it originally looked.

@blackbearmagic made a bunch of cool templates for the workshop I'm going to do in December, too. I'll get a few photos of those later.

I think my favorite part of this was how different your mask looks from all the ones I've made so far, and not just because you made a bird and I've been making mammals

It's a completely different piece of wearable art. It has a different soul. It has a different feel.

I think everyone should make a mask of their favorite animal to wear, even if they're not a therian. I think the world would be a healthier, happier place if everyone made a cardboard replica of their favorite animal's face.

Bear's mask templates! I just want to stress that our masks are extremely low tech and budget friendly. They're made out of cardboard, hot glue, and fleece, with an elastic band in the back. I used a little sheer black fabric I had leftover from my terror bird costume for the eyes.

Fleece and felt are very forgiving fabrics and you can basically just cut a single large piece and stretch it to fit, gluing it to the cardboard one small section at a time. The fabric was the only purchase we made for these, and it was in the form of thrift store blankets.
