Conqueror
You forgot how to win. Ā Without your knowledge or permission, aĀ million tiny nothings are at the gate, seeking to drain all you have.Ā The job you (appreciate but) hate, the never-ending string of money woes, the meaningless exercises of self-denial that leave you feeling more like an amalgam of disjointed functionsĀ than human. Ā If that isnāt enough, you have to contend with wounds of the past that seem to wait for you to descend to your lowest point, then rip themselves open without warning. Ā The litany of pain becomes too much, and all you want to do is quit. Ā
The concept once seemed so foreign to you; worse than death even. Ā But youāre suddenly intrigued. Ā How does it work? Ā You donāt know first hand. Ā That was never the stuff that you were made of. Ā But a lifetime of fighting eroded that old stuff.Ā Quitting - once the enemy, now the exotic unknown - calls you closer. Ā It canāt be much different than a day at the beach. Ā You love the beach. Ā You lay down, maybe you curl up, and wait for the nothings to do their worst.
While you wait, you remember how much you hate waiting. Ā The void takes too damn long. Ā You laugh - at something, or maybe nothing. Ā It seems more of a biological imperative than a reaction. Ā Your body needs this.Ā Your stomach growls and your toes ache. Ā Coughing, you try to remember the last time you had water. Ā Autopilot takes over to remind you that no matter how dead you feel inside, you are still alive. Ā Those million tiny nothings would have killed you if they could have, but they didnāt. Ā And if theyĀ couldnāt get the job one,Ā why would you roll over and hand them the victory? Ā That isnātĀ you.
You plan to get up. Ā Maybe you donāt get up in that moment, or even that day. Ā But slowly you massage the aches, you tend to your wounds and you cater to the parts of you that make you feel most human. Ā You feel your heartbeat again and see yourself alive. Ā Grasping at the scrap of you that remains, you stretch and flip it until youĀ finally have enough to get up and give yourself the once over. Ā Your nose scrunches. Ā Dusty. Ā Frayed. Ā Possibly a little bent. Ā But powerful and alive.
Youāve been here before. Ā How many times? Ā Ten? Thousands? Ā Being thereĀ doesnāt matter. Ā What matters is that you didnāt stay. Ā You looked over the brink, and laughed at it. Ā Youāre a conqueror. Ā Itās all you know and itās all you nee to know.

The Destination
As soon as weāre cast out of the house, we spend it waiting for our time to arrive: Ā the end of the first day of school; Friday; Christmas. Ā Each benchmark is barely reached before weāre gnawing at the next dangling carrot. Ā And in our stops between destinations, we allow living in misery to suffice. Ā Our destination is the big payout. Ā We expect weeks and months of migraines and tears will all be solved in a weekās vacation. Ā We hold onto loneliness because weāre waiting for the perfect way and time to fall in love. Ā Life becomes the thing we endure between special occasions. Ā We bank on a windfall rather than making small investments in our current happiness.
But what if we did something incredible and chose to be happy because itās Wednesday? Ā What if you bought yourself flowers because you found an extra $8 in your purse? Ā What if you took an extra few minutes in your car to belt out a song, not because it was your favorite, but because you felt like finishing? Ā What if you you didnāt wait and just blurted out āI love you?
I tried something new for a week: Ā I didnāt āwait.ā Ā Not for payday, or Friday, not the windfall. Ā I had a glass of weekend wine on Tuesday. Ā I called my oldest friend on a Wednesday and had a long conversation. Ā I meditated twice in one day, just because I had the time. Ā I had so much fun, when Friday came, I didnāt realize it. Ā My payday, while still appreciated, didnāt feel like a temporary deliverance. Ā They were just two more happy days in a string of happy days.
Waiting for the windfall has stifled my writing. Ā I want to be the best. Ā I havenāt written in so long, I want my return to be a magnum opus. Ā I want to curse myself, because my pet peeve in writing is beginning too many sentences with āIā and Iām three paragraphs in before realizing I have become what I have mocked. Ā My return was supposed to be special. Ā A well thought out post, heralding my glorious return to writing greatness.
This aināt that. Ā This is my acknowledgement that Iām rusty and battleworn. Ā This is my statement that I havenāt done this in so long, I feel like Iām starting over. Ā You might read some utter bullshit. Ā I may seem a little hesitant trust you, and my writing wonāt be nearly as raw or open as it once was. Ā But thatās just me getting used to the whole process again. Ā Iām not waiting to āget thereā as a writer before I feel worthy of writing again. Ā Iām saying thereās no destination; thereās only now.
Iām saying this:
Hi. Iām Melanie. And Iām here.
Patiently Awaiting Flowers
My heart is heavy this time of year. Ā It's the time I think on levee breaches and bloated bodies, a beloved city failed by her sons and daughters and my mother's crepe myrtle tree.
Things can be destroyed, so I donāt really attach myself to them.Ā So when I lost my mother, I didn't look for her rings, or a piece of her handmade wedding dress. Ā I looked for her tree. Ā The one she begged her mother for, for so long. Ā As my gramsā health failed, her tree began to wither, so she finally acquiesced and gave Mama a branch. Ā Supposedly, that's all you need for a crepe myrtle to flower. Ā So Mama cleared a spot in the middle of the garden, placed the tiny little branch in the middle, and waited. Ā
It still hadn't flowered in the fall of 1988 when my grams passed away. Ā There were no flowers in 1989 or 1990 either. Ā It reminded me of the Charlie Brown Christmas tree:Ā skinny, bare, but endearing in its hopefulness.Ā My mother was unmoved. Ā "The branch has to take root. Ā A little sun, a little water.Ā Weāll have a tree when itās time.Ā Be patient and it will flower.ā
In 1991 we saw a bud. Ā Then two. Then suddenly, there was a tiny tree with an explosion of bold, pink blossoms. Ā It was nothing to me at 15. Ā It was everything to my mother. Ā She shrieked. Ā A little branch, a little sun, a little water, a lot of patience and unspoken hope changed her world. Ā The tree grew stronger and my mother didnāt.Ā One of her few pleasures in her last years of life was the beautiful garden she built around her motherās tree.Ā Nothing was allowed in that garden that didnāt complement it.Ā By the time my own mother died in 1994, it stood taller than my head.Ā
Once my mother was gone, I got it.Ā Through our mothersā gardens, we were given the opportunity to cultivate legacy. Ā It was like bringing a part of her back. Ā Iād drive past my house and daydream.Ā I envisioned purchasing my own home. Ā Iād ceremoniously break a branch, explaining the significance of this third generation tradition.Ā Then as time passed, Iād patiently wait for flowers.
In the past nine years, Iāve replaced things twice over.Ā But as for my motherās tree, Katrina left nothing but a round patch of dirt, reminding me that there was once life there, blossoming with pink promise.Ā Thatās what the levee took from me:Ā the only tangible manifestation of my motherās legacy Iāve ever wanted.Ā Sometimes the sadness of it turns me inside out. Ā I know what it means to miss New Orleans.Ā This is the story for so many scattered sons and daughters, who will forever feel the beat of the second line in their hearts.Ā Itās not always easy, but Iāve made it this far.Ā Whatās a little farther?
Plus, now I have my own yard.Ā Itās small, but thereās just enough room to plant my own legacy.Ā Experience tells me I donāt need much.Ā A little sun, a little water and a branch. Ā Then all I need to do is wait and cultivate a legacy.
some guy on facebook tried to tell me that kat denningsā boobs arenāt good because sheās overweight. like if that isnāt the most perfect rack/bod youāve ever seen then get the fuck out of my face.
I never understood jerkoff dudes who think big boobs ādonāt countā if the person attached to them is overweight. Likeā¦what do you think big boobs on skinny people are made of? Air? Cotton candy? The souls of the innocent??
Hoooow is she even overweight?Ā !?!?!??Ć·? Even if she is by the backwards measurement that doctors use, LOOK AT HER!
she isnāt overweight
and itās all good. he couldnāt even begin to get in touche with her or a woman like her in the first place
Fuckboy nonsense.
Iām a fan of Kat Denningsā boobs. Seriously. I love her cleavage.
I look around, thereās baby pictures of me everywhere. - Sheng Wang (x)
Question: What do you think of being labeled punk or proto-punk? Death: We appreciate the rock historians labeling us this. When we made this music from 1973 on, we always called it hard-driving rock ānā roll. The term āpunkā for music was non-existent in those years, as a matter of fact, if you called someone a punk in those years ā us included ā those would be considered fighting words which usually got you either a black eye or a bloody nose.
Your favorite punk band probably sounds like these guys.Ā
