I love this little girl <3 She’s more and more open and relaxed with every new day. I’m doing all my best to build up her confidence and I’m so happy to see the results. She propably never be as easy-going as Ginger, but we’ve made a huge progress. I hope soon her fear induced aggression will be just a memory. :)

Body awareness training? Duma does have fair body awareness, and doesn’t run into things too bad and is really good at avoiding things, but I want her to feel more aware of what she’s doing and feel more comfortable doing other things and new things
seeing these dogs jumping off their people and all that, does that need body awareness, is that just trust in the dog, is it the dogs psychical structure?? What goes into dogs being able to do that?
Yes to all of the above? Body awareness training is great for everything. Aayla is pretty great with not running into things but she lacks confidence with balance and new surfaces so we do a lot of body awareness exercises.
I think you’re talking about a rebound? I would suggest a lot of body awareness and target training. The only thing I would wonder about is how big Duma is. Aayla is lean at 45lbs and she tears me to shreds with her rebound trick. I’m trying to get her more focused so she pushes off my hip and not my gut, because wow does that suck.
I didn’t do tons of work before training it but we always are working on stuff like that anyways. I recently broke this trick down. Aayla is really sensitive and I would intake a sharp breath if she got me good with her nails. She picked that up and started doing it without actually touching me. So we are retraining it and I’m learning to suck it up.
Word of advice : thick jeans and a thick jacket. I don’t know how you disc dog people handle it unless you’re wearing something protective.
I don’t think Duma would be able to do it because she’s about 60lbs or more now, so she’d kill me LOL. So probably won’t do it with her, but I def want to work on body awareness and helping her stand on things
I put her on a low table and she got nervous and jumped off?? More like slid off and crashed. but she WILL jump onto the trampoline by herself from the ground.
Make sure the table has good traction, otherwise it can seriously hurt her by falling off and stuff. It also will make her not want to jump on things if she cannot trust that it’ll be safe. Also, for jumping on you and stuff, get an equestrian vest.
that is true, the table might not have really had good traction, she was standing on it well enough ,but on new things she just doesn’t know how to get down, which doesn’t help Are equestrian vests pretty tough??
They are! @books-and-barns was actually the one that told me to try one (I think). I never got around to it, but I now knew what to ask about, and a lot of people recommended them to me for exactly this. I know it’s not the same, but I can vault my 43lb dog off me. It hurts a bit, and sometimes winds me, but yeah! I’m probably gonna teach Forecast to vault as well, she should be around 60lbs.
They are designed to protect you from falling onto hard/pointy items or having a horse’s hoof come down on your ribcage. A brand called Tipperary makes the one I have, it’s a dense foam layered with a gel (foam on outside, gel toward your body) and is segmented so it bends and moves with your body. It’s an eventing vest, all covered with fabric then laced up at the sides so you can get your perfect fit and zipped up at the front. You can get them used on tack resale groups on facebook.
That sounds great actually! I think the body awareness training would be the first step of course, especially since she has trouble up on surfaces that are smaller like a chair or a smaller table, does totally fine on large things like the trampoline and such, so it’s not the height
@canisitsnotlupus You’ll have to show me when the time comes tho LOL
Maybe start from something simple? Like transitions between sitting/laying down and then adding more positions, like standing (I’m so bad at explaining things, english is not my main language, so there’s a little outline of what I mean) .
Sit->lay down->sit
Sit -> stand up -> lay down
lay down -> stand up -> lay down
And various other mixes of all above.
I’m doing this with Ginger right now (I will add video later to my blog) and I it helped to develop his muscles and body awareness A LOT. Like, at first he wasn’t physically able to do quick transitions like lay down//up, and now he’s much stronger. I’m also going to excersise him on fitness ball, starting with basic things, like just standing on it’s surface and then I’ll add some stretching and easy transitions :)

I get anxious when I think about Duma on the long lead now
@maisietheyellowlab Duma just doesn’t do well on leash, she doesn’t understand boundaries and I had no idea there was a dog behind me one time and Duma saw it before I could brace and ended up hurting me, I’m not using the long lead much after that LOL
Oh man I can relate, I sprained my finger bc Maisie launchrd herself after a dog in one of the first agility classes and I tried to hold on to the leash. But yeah generally she doesn’t understand that she’s attached to a leash either. I’m actually starting to train her to turn around when she gets to the end of the leash..
That’s probably what I should do, she’s taken me to the ground on the long lead if I can’t brace hard enough
Okay, here goes some tips that had helped me with Ginger, maybe you’ll find them useful? :3
Try to get Duma’s attention every time when the distance between you and her gets too big for your comfort zone – for example, you can do some weird noise/click your tongue/call her name, and when she looks at you recall her with ton of positive energy in your body and voice – like the fact she looked at you and came closer is ABSOLUTELY THE BEST THING THAT HAPPENED IN YOUR LIFE.
BUT!!! Do so only if you both can mantain such high energy levels. For example try to avoid situation when the dog gets TOO EXCITED, jumps at you and stops thinking about anything (happened a lot with Ginger at the beggining). You know Duma’s best and, sadly, without any trainer that can look at you irl you have to just try and see at how high levels of excitement you can both work. The point is, you want her to know that being close to you is simply great.
Then, when she’s close to you, you can mark it with clicker (when you use one) or/AND give her a treat or play with her – again, some dogs are better with food, some are better with toys. If you want to use food try something that is super tasty and what’s Duma doesn’t get very often.
Above that change your walk routine from time to time. Go in many different directions. Turn back at the middle of the road. Jump over the bench. Do some excersises to make Duma focus on you and also to show her, that you are more intersting than the environment (but don’t overdo this – she also needs a time for herself)
About her reaction to other dogs.
Well, it’s hard to tell what the root of the problem is without seeing it on your own. But here are some tips that many found useful:
Focus cue – teach her to focus on you. Tell her name/cue, mark with clicker, give treat. Repeat as many times as you find necessary. Slowly add distractions and, for example, work in different place, then outside etc., just like with any other cues.
When there’s dog nearby tell her to focus – but BEFORE she goes into “I HAVE TO GET TO THAT DOG” mode. You should add such distractions very slowly – first ask her to focus when the other dog is very, very far away, and with time and excersises you should be able to walk near it without bigger problem.
There’s no play if there’s no work. Many people put their dog off leash almost the same moment they meet friendly dog ready to have some fun. This may lead to overexcited dogs that want’s nothing else than to play – such dogs have tendency to pull towards other dogs (ignoring everything else), because they want to play so bad – and they want it NOW. Play can be a great reward and reinforce wanted behavior but it has to be used as such. Simple “sit” and “wait” or whatever else is good enough. You just want dog to know, that his friends are never more important than you are.
When your dog is aggresive towards other dogs or afraid of them, seek professionall help. Online advices are nothing in comparision to real life consultation and can do more harm than good in the long run (for example, you can train afraid dog to work well near the scary thing – but will the fear itself go away or it will be just supressed?).
Every dog is different. Even with above things helped me with Ginger it doesn’t mean they’ll do wonders in your case. But, anyway, I wish you good luck and I hope you’ll find this post useful. Fingers crossed for you and Duma, I’m sure you will be over this problem very soon!
Face of regret
Fun fact about Ginger – he’s afraid of water (not really toller-like, huh?). Today was the first time he even TRIED to come close to the pond and get himself wet. After few gently attempts (first or second one you can see above) he started to enjoy it! :D Maybe 2017 will be the year I will finaly see him swimming!

I was curious what kind of cameras everyone uses for your blogs? Any extra tips you use to get extra great shots of your four legged friend?
I usually just use my iphone since it’s always on me and take a million photos until a few turn out good! What about everyone else?
I use the Nikon d5500 with the 50mm 1.8 lens it’s tons of fun. I used to shoot with my phone too! Photography is the bees knees😁
my phone lmao its lit
I use a Nikon D5300, I’ve been using it for a few years now and I really really want to upgrade to a full frame DSLR, got my eye on a particular model but it’s… hella expensive… :’D
Canon EOS 1200D :D
Under each of my photos I usually post info about the lens I used. For portraits I most often work with old analog Pentacon 50mm f1.8 lenses – but they’re 40 years old so no autofocus. Extremely unconvienient when you are photographing animals XD Seriously, it’s a miracle that I can even do a sharp photos with it, but the bokeh it’s well worth all of the struggles.
For lazy days I go with great Tamron 70-300mm f 4-5.6, but chromatic abberations with this one are sometimes horrible. I still like it though :)
Hello beautiful~
Something different this time. I’m very proud of this photo :)
