as much as i get the sentiment behind "make more bad art" there's gotta be a better way of communicating "you don't have to be technically proficient or hold yourself to a specific standard of practice" that doesn't sound as backhanded lol

nobody talks about how exhausting it is to live in that space between "things will get better" and "i can't handle this anymore." it's like your emotions are constantly swinging. leaving you both hopeful and defeated in the same day.

There comes a point, for some writers, when you'll be editing the same piece for the umpteenth time, where ideas that once felt fresh and exciting, where writing that once felt clever and clean, will begin to feel trite and uninspired. Boring. Bland. Colorless.

That feeling is usually a lie.

Most things that we spend enough time looking at and thinking about in a short enough period of time begin to feel dull and ordinary, no matter what they are.

If you found your ideas exciting when you came up with them, however, if your word choice felt fun and your sentences painted the picture you saw in your head when you first wrote them down? They'll probably still feel fresh and vivid and exciting to an outside audience, too, who reads them for the first time with fresh eyes, no matter how frustratingly ordinary they begin to feel to the writer who has stared at them so long they've lost their lustre.

Don't give up on your ideas when editing drags on.

If you need to, put the document aside and give yourself some space from the story, too.

Take a few days to reset your own expectations, and you'll be surprised how often you come back with fresh perspective to find that absence can make the heart grow fonder for those things that came out of your own heart in the first place, too.
