Oops! All Women: Ranger’s Apprentice Edition
Being but a humble lesbian myself, I am always looking for a way to add women to a media that I like, so here goes. (Please note I haven’t read beyond The Royal Ranger and that was many years ago, so I have only the foggiest idea of how women get incorporated into the corps in canon).
In a couple of the books, it’s mentioned how Lady Pauline and Alyss are able to use the way people underestimate them to their advantage in Courier work, so I imagine that would be a compelling reason as to why the elite intelligence force of Rangers would be made up of women. People often suppose Rangers to be practitioners of “dark magic” so boom, if they’re women, people think they’re witches and steer clear of them.
Will’s full name is Wilhelmina, but she goes by Will anyway. I picture her with a kind of shaggy haircut that ends a little below her chin, and a fringe that she’s always brushing out of her eyes. I mean can you imagine how precious baby butch Will would be!!!
Horatia was born in a village some distance from Castle Redmont, but after being orphaned as a young teenager, she disguised herself as a boy under the name Horace and traveled to Castle Redmont to attend Battleschool there.
Gilan is now Gilda, the only child of her father. Though Sir David was disappointed that he couldn’t have a son, he resolved that at least any child of his should train with a sword. It certainly caused a stir, but Sir David’s status meant that Gilda was able to train as a warrior despite others’ disapproval. It was a huge relief to her when she joined the Rangers and she wasn’t the only woman around anymore.
Crowley is still addressed as Crowley, but that’s actually her surname in this ’verse. To do a little switcheroo on the name Crowley Meratyn, her given name is Meralda, which she never liked. I see her as more on the femme side.
I always thought it was weird that in canon Halt didn’t change his name when he escaped to Araluen. Like, how many young Hibernian men named Halt were running around in Araluen soon after the crown prince Halt vanished from Clomnel? The average Araluen layperson might not have known his name, but surely the Rangers and Barons must have been at least a little politically cognizant of Hibernia, so how come no one suspected anything?? So I’m amending that here by having the ‘prince’ Halt take advantage of her exile to transition and start using the name Hester. Join my transfemme!Halt agenda!
