Despite her unorthodox turn out arrangements for her fractured foot, despite two days of pouring rain, despite new mare shenanigans, despite a drop in temperature, Abba has remained sound, and today surprised me by offering up trot in hand repeatedly, on the straight, and on circles.

It is hard to keep her in some sort of shape when all you can do is walk. Her topline is melting, sadly, and on this grass she is going to balloon, and there is nothing our walks and our groundwork can do to stave off the weight gain. On the other hand, we tried some lateral work in hand today, and she did pretty well, with some genuinely nice steps in there for once.

She is, luckily, much calmer now in the big field, and is less upset about the new mare with all the space they have. The new mare is also being nicer (having more than 3cm of rain dumped on you, with howling winds to boot, will do that), so for the moment all is well.

Sweet girl has actually been a FORWARD ride lately! Now that we’ve got responsiveness and momentum down we can start focusing on straightness! We aren’t anywhere where I thought we’d be at this point, but I’m happy regardless. The setbacks we’ve had have only strengthened our relationship and level of understanding with each other. Can’t wait to see what the future holds!
