I’m a character artist. I’m used to painting skin and hair and clothes... soft textures, basically. I found out the hard way that this approach does not work for rocks. Unless you want them to look like weirdly shiny flesh blobs instead 🤔

If Tikal ever appears in the Sonic movie franchise, who do you imagine playing her? I think Lupita Nyong'o could be a good choice. She's known for her roles in Black Panther, The Wild Robot, The Jungle Book Disney remake, etc. She's good at doing accents and can play compassionate well.
I LOVED this idea! I love Lupita so much and she is sooo good with drama but also with compassion and kindness! Plus! Echinidas are POC, so is a great fit!
I'm almost certain that Amy and Tikal will be connected in Sonic 4. I can't articulate it very well, but I know they will be. More specifically, I think Amy will "inherit" the duty that Tikal had as a kind of guide to the Master Emerald. Because the Chaos Emeralds did have guardians, but Tikal was also the person who knew best how they worked. Not to mention that Amy is perfect to inherit this role; she is empathetic, kind, and full of unconditional love like Tikal was, and if she had to choose someone to handle so much power and responsibility with temperance and grace, that someone would certainly be Amy.
What's make a (magical) girl? - A Amy Rose's characterization theory
I was thinking about how the Sonic movies are very aware of superhero tropes and openly incorporate them into Sonic, with him even talking about it and thinking he's like Flash.
With Amy's arrival in the fourth film, I was thinking precisely about these tropes, and although in superhero movies is very common for the girl to be "the girlfriend" or "the girl" in the group of heroes, Jeff Fowler has bolder plans for Amy.
He has already shown great respect for the character by choosing not to include Amy in the third film so that she could have her own film to shine in, and says he will make her more than just the girl.

I also don't think he'll turn her into a girl boss, since in her introduction, even though she fights incredibly well against the Metals, she shows signs of fatigue and that it's not so easy for her to fight like that, that it takes a toll on her.

Magical girls, like superheroes, have their own tropes and conventions. Considering that Amy will likely mark a major turning point in the franchise, with her introduction alongside Metal, the cosmic nature of her launch game, and the increased scope of the franchise, it makes sense that her character would have a strong build and be based on something very feminine, as she is also the first major female hero character.
So, here's my theory: Amy will be heavily inspired by the ✨magical girl genre✨, and that fits her perfectly and provides some really cool clues for the narrative.
Amy's inspiration from Magical Girls matches her main personality traits.
Amy Rose, regardless of any power or role she may receive in the films, is above all the embodiment of unconditional love.
Whether in games or comics, Amy shows care and compassion for everything and everyone, embodying empathy, perseverance, and positivity.
And well, what is more Magical Girls than unwavering love?
From classics such as Sailor Moon, Madoka Magica, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Cardcaptor Sakura, and Princess Tutu, all magical girls are deeply based in love.
They find healing and strength in something that many media outlets would view as weakness. And that is Amy's trump card: her kindness and ability to connect with others. The strong foundation for her core skill.
Not only that, but Magical Girls also addresses friendship and femininity as strengths. Amy Rose is the most stereotypically feminine girl in the Sonic cast, as well as the most likely to be the one who collects friends like key chains.
Again, in a world where such traits are seen as weak, basing Amy on the trope that elevates these qualities would elevate the character. She needs to have things added to her, not removed. ESPECIALLY when these traits are coded as feminine and are generally devalued.
Magical Girls also brings a lot about friendship, which fits very well. In the original quartet's configuration, Amy is easily the heart. Her friendly personality makes her the most versatile and adaptable of the quartet, and as I said before, she has traits that actually align her with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles without exception.
It's very easy to imagine her having witty and profound moments with each Wachowski sibling. Aside from her original friendships with Cream and Team Rose, as well as other characters. In fact, female friendship is a big deal in the genre, so it would be really cool to see a Team Rose united by the hip and basically Amy being the best friend/sister to all the other girls lol.
Amy is someone who offers herself as a safe haven where people can be vulnerable. What is a magical girl if not that? A heroine who can understand us and give us refuge?
Because that's what Amy loves to do, help. It's in her nature. Not only that, but she has a thirst for adventure, a stubbornness to always hope for the best, and a streak of independence in the face of an unjust reality. Amy is a catalyst for change based on her belief that anyone can improve and be the best version of themselves, since love is in everything and everyone. She has no fear of confronting what she considers unfair or the standard norm. She finds a normal, standard life tedious.
Courage, selflessness, standing up to dictatorial governments, facing evil entities and beings head-on. Both magical girls and Amy have this in common.
If there's anyone who embodies the aesthetics of glitter, courage, and love for all living things, it's her! And both Amy and Magical Girls are from Japan! The connection is already there 😁!
But beyond that...
2. This inspiration can allow for interesting explorations of the character.
Basing Amy on magical girls isn't just about aesthetics, but also about the complexity that comes with it. Madoka Magica manages to be quite dark, Revolutionary Girl Utena addresses patriarchy and gender roles, Sailor Moon has moments of cosmic horror for God's sake!
Using this baseline can allow us to raise questions and explore Amy in greater depth. One of my favorite angles is the weight of responsibility.
Magical girls explore how stressful leading a double life can be. The mask versus the person, and when one begins and the other ends. Amy's lore always emphasizes how she values all life and fights for it. Frontiers gives her the mission of spreading love throughout her life. Crossword says she is a philanthropist.
It's very easy to extend this to a guardian duty, for example. If you've been following my blog for a while, you know that I'm a big fan of the theory that Amy is the guardian of the Time Stones. The movies have already shown that this universe is not above entrusting extraordinary cosmic powers to teenagers, and it would be an interesting exploration of her character.
Amy is a character full of passion, desire, and personality, but she wouldn't hurt a fly. Seeing her desires thwarted by a greater duty is so delightfully entertaining narratively speaking.
Besides this a personal exploration of Amy herself! Magical girls focus a lot on the protagonist's personality, and it'd be nice to see more of Amy's core. Sonic Prime addressed this in parts, more specifically how Amy can feel lonely and her search for sisterhood.
These are interesting aspects that could be incorporated into the films. Someone who loves everyone but cannot love herself and longs for understanding. In addition to, again, my theory that Amy is from Little Planet and has her Rose team as sisters (Cream and Sticks here, sorry Big), whom she misses because she is on Earth and they separated after an attack by the Metal Sonics.
Amy also has many narrative points in her own 30-year history to address maturity, something common in Magical Girls. Amy changed a lot, and while the whole point about growing up and maturing is very controversial for her, the film saga has a very specific point about this that can help: the Sonic movies are about allowing yourself to be a child before being a hero. Enjoying time without rushing.
It could be that Amy had a normal life that was radically changed by war and destruction, and she had to grow up too fast and now needs to relearn how to be young again. Explore her vulnerability as a character and see beyond a simple girl boss.
In addition, we also have self conflicts that explore mortality, low self-esteem, and sacrifice. Something that Amy would fit very well. A mission to protect and care for others mirrors that of many other girls of her kind and would be incredible, maintaining Amy's caregiver trait without turning her into a mother, ignoring her abrasive side, or limiting her potential as a competent fighter.

3. Being inspired by Magical Girls can bring a new perspective to Amy's abilities.
Amy doesn't have powers in the video game... except that's not true, because, my goodness, this girl is super OP!
Okay, Amy isn't super well known for her powers, but that doesn't mean she doesn't have them, and how they can translate them in fun ways and enhance that by incorporating ideas from Magical Girl.
Because for Magical Girls, powers are symbols. They are important parts of the characters, means that elevate them to a version that they see as better (although this is not because what matters is the person underneath) and the means of transformation and extension. Powers bring out the best in the character and are part of their core and history.
And everyone in the SCU has a defining power, fueled by their chaos energy. Sonic has his speed, Knuckles his super strength, Tails his super intelligence (because it is indeed a superpower, and I think that chaos energy abilities can cause mutations and enhancements in physical and psychic traits, so that's Tails' gift :D), Shadow has teleportation.
With hedgehogs in particular appearing to be a species with an insane affinity for the energy of chaos.
So what would Amy's abilities be? Time control. Think of something like Garnet from Steven Universe/Bruno from Encanto. I'll talk about more ideas in a moment.
Amy already has flirting in her history with time in Sonic CD, her fortune affinity in general and her kinda anxious and eager personality makes it very easy to turn this into her basic skill. How much fun that would be!
Come on, the team of heroes is already chaotic enough, with a girl who can see possible futures? Adventure and chaos!
Not only that, Amy in the games can heal and has a kind of sense for tracking others. And that brings up another idea: she can cultivate her time control ability for smaller skills. Like healing by accelerating the natural process (because I'm a sucker for puns and come on, time heals everything, right? It's a no-brainier!), tracking people, everything would make sense with this ability.
Not only that, magical girls float, are graceful and acrobatic, but at the same time very, very strong. And isn't that basically Amy's fighting style? She was floating in her intro!
She also has her signature hammer, a weapon she has mastered and something that is also very common with Magical Girls! She has already shown great proficiency in its use, putting an absurd amount of chaotic energy into it to make it more destructive and make it come back to her.
Exploring a combination of physical abilities plus her predictions would be incredible, especially since Metal adapts to heroes with its AI, so it would be a cool asset!
But, to be honest, my favorite part is that it would probably also give Amy super mode.
I'm breaking my silence here, I've always wanted to see a super Amy, and basing her on magical girls is a direct path to that! Most of the magical girls I know have a supreme form, usually achieved after a significant sacrifice.
It's a very interesting aspect that could be explored. Amy gaining her greatest form after a great act of selflessness is very consistent with the character. Especially since that's how Sonic himself became super for the first time in the movies, with the power of love. Literally.
Since this is a rule of this universe, it would make sense.
And no, it doesn't have to be the Chaos Emeralds. Blaze goes great with the Sol Emeralds, Amy can be great with... the Time Stones!
The jewels of time are introduced as capable of performing miracles using time, similar to Emeralds. They already work on Little Planet and seem to be real too. Amy could achieve a new range of abilities and it would be really amazing!
She could use that power for so many incredible plot points! Which reminds me...
4. The inspiration from Magic Girls highlights the importance of taking a stand against evil.
One thing you can always count on is that magical girls will ALWAYS fight against oppression, evil, and the cycle of violence.
Sailor Moon fought monsters, not with violence and hatred, but by healing and using her selflessness and love for her loved ones.
Revolutionary Girl Utena fights against patriarchal oppression and elitism, as well as for the right of the one she loves to be free.
Madoka fights against fate and the laws of the universe, challenging what the incubators have established about witches and defying despair with hope.
And one side of Amy that many fans seem to forget is how much this girl is against oppression, a revolutionary leader, and a defender of the most vulnerable.
No kidding.
In Heros, she is one of the leaders of a resistance against the Eggman empire. She defended Gamma from Sonic himself and wanted to help the coconuts at all costs in Frontiers because they needed help.
Amy always stands up against oppression because the love she feels for everything and everyone cannot bear to see injustice. Not only that, she fights using compassion and empathy. Amy does fight, but above all she combats ideas. She wears herself out, persists, and transforms because she believes there are better things.
This needs to be reflected upon now more than ever.
Amy Rose is such a complex character with such deep layers that can be explored, and basing her on a genre that is always willing to give that complexity and respect to its female characters is one of the best ways to portray the character.
That love is, and always will be, the most powerful power in the world.

3. How would the first few acts go, and how would each of the wachowskis and others react to amy? Also, how important will they be?

Would be soo cool if it was a Amy Rose flashback! With a baby Sonic while they both kids? Or even one with Metal! Either way a flashback! Bonus points if with out Earth lore!
There's going to be a reason involving jewels with unimaginable power, but they wouldn't be the Chaos Emeralds, but rather the Time Stones! Since we have Sonic CD as a source and Amy and Meral in the mix, it would definitely be pretty cool! Maybe they don't have as many rings this time, so they might rely more on traditional means like road trips, or even rings that Amy has. Or maybe they do have more rings. In New York? In my theory, Amy came to save Sonic after seeing that Metal was interfering with the timeline... leaving her own home - Little Planet - which is at war with the rest of Metal's army. Or maybe she could even live in New York for a while as a refugee after the war became difficult.
I think the first arc should be about the boys getting used to Amy as a group, then having an individual exploration of her, since Amy has personality traits compatible with all three of them and vice versa. I know Tails will love this girl, Knuckles will be more cautious but eventually accept her, and I think Sonic will be the last to trust Amy and that they'll have some friction in the first act, although I think in the end, of the three brothers, he'll end up closer to her.

I even theorize and strongly hope that Amy will miss home terribly and desperately want to try and fix things to return, even though she loves Earth and her friends. This would create tension with Sonic as he grows attached to her because he doesn't want her to leave, wishing that Amy would see Earth as her home, just as he does, while struggling to understand that she already has a home that isn't here.
Team Rose a 100%! Sticks would be soo cool as part of the group btw! Little Planet, Time Stones, maybe the metal brotherhood from the fleetway comics. And Amy saving Sonic like SA2.
I need scenes where they fight Metal progressively until the final Boss is Neo Metal. And of course, a reference to Speedway Stardust with a race between the two. I dare say it would be incredible to see Metal turn into Neo after seeing that he lost to Sonic in the race and that he needs to kill him now.
First, Sonamy needs to be a slow burn, not just in this movie but in the next ones. They NEED to write both of them well, and it's impossible to build a relationship between these two in one movie. The relationship between Tom and Sonic took at least two movies, and the siblings' relationship is still being built. So, it's nothing more than romantic tension. I wanted them to invest in how they are good friends, how they understand each other, and how Sonic can be vulnerable with Amy. Also, how Amy can let her guard down around him and be honest. I wanted them to be childhood friends that Sonic met while still living with LongClaw and met Amy when Little Planet appeared above Never Lake on his island. I also wanted them to draw parallels with Tom and Maddie. I even think they've been planning this since the second movie. I just... want to see how these two get along despite their differences and relate to each other in a way that's different from everyone else.
