Okay I have the biggest fucking problem with the massive generalizations these stories create. Yes, the people who commit heinous acts like these should be punished and belong in the deepest depths of hell. But do not take the actions of these men and turn it into a way to hate and despise all service members. I know so many in the military who are genuinely good people. A large portion of our military are the first responders in natural disasters, not only in the US but around the world. They do not deserve to be lumped in with these monsters. Rant over.

1. It’s not a “story” and I have a huge fucking problem with you using language that implies it’s fabricated instead of a real actual thing that happened. 

2. The actions of the US military create a culture of entitlement, racism, xenophobia, sexism, and dehumanization of non-military people. I do not hate and despise all military members, but if you think your rhetoric is doing anything but apologizing and defending a horrible group of our society that is allowed to get away with some of the most heinous crimes known to mankind, think again. You may not want those people “lumped in” with these criminals, but what you are rather intentionally doing is separating “humans” from “monsters” when the fact is, they’re both the same. If these men hadn’t been caught, tried, and punished (with what is honestly not even severity), they would’ve come home and become revered soldiers with families, friends, and a fucking lifetime of being abusers ahead. 

3. The US has consistently failed to punish the military for massive human rights violations, including torture, murder, genocide, disappearances, rape, prison camps, trafficking, and forced labor [x].

Here is a list of the human rights violations in Iraq alone after the invasion [x].

4. Governments that the US military has unsuccessfully tried to overthrow for personal gain: China, Albania, East Germany, Costa Rica, Syria, Egypt, Indonesia, North Vietnam, France, Costa Rica, Cuba, Costa Rica (again), Angola, Zaire, Seychelles, South Yemen, Suriname, Libya, Iraq, Somalia, Somalia (again), Honduras [x].

5. Governments that the US military has successfully overthrown for personal gain: Iran, Guatemala, Guiana, Iraq, Cambodia, Laos, Ecuador, Congo, Brazil, Dominican Republic, Bolivia, Indonesia, Ghana, Chile, Greece, Bolivia, Australia, Portugal, Jamaica, Chad, Grenada, Fiji, Nicaragua, Panama, Bulgaria, Albania, Afghanistan, Yugoslavia, Ecuador, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Iraq (again), Haiti, Libya, and Ukraine [x].

6. The US military has actively supported drug cartels, fascist regimes, neo-Nazis, actual Nazis, the Taliban, genocidal leaders, repressive juntas, military dictatorships, violent gangs, civil wars, displacement and relocation of thousands of trafficked people, colonialist regimes, dangerous and criminal coups, mass murderers [x]. In addition, oftentimes, it is under the pretext of providing aid to nations suffering from wars, political instability, and natural disasters that the US army first makes it’s way into countries they later cause destruction of. 

7. Here’s a long detailed list of atrocities the CIA has committed under military direction [x].

8. 70 million US army members are coerced, sexually assaulted, or raped in one day, and less than 2.5% are actually punished or penalized [x]. 85% of assaults go unreported. 90% of assault survivors are discharged [x].This is so clearly NOT an issue that exists only within foreign countries, but within their own ranks as well.

Syrian refugees: the numbers, timeline, and ways you can help.

Having been named the most extreme circumstances involving refugees since WWII, 107 500 refugees seeking asylum have traveled to the EU in July of 2015, with the majority being Syrians. 

An estimated 10 million Syrians have been displaced by the war in Syria since its conception in March, 2011. Approximately 6.5 million of these displaced people are scattered within Syria itself, and over 3 million people have traveled to bordering countries such as Turkey, Iraq, Lebanon and Jordan to seek refuge. An estimated 150 000 people have sought asylum in the EU. States belonging to the Union have agreed to take on another 33 000 Syrian refugees, of which 85% will be accepted by Germany alone.  Timeline of Events: 

2011, April-May -5000 Syrian refugees, mostly children and their mothers, cross the Lebanese border in order to flee fighting in Talkalakh 

2011, June-November -Thousands of Syrians begin to flow through Turkish borders in order to escape the onslaught of the military-led siege on Jisr-al-Shighour. -In July, 2000 Syrians seek refuge in Jordan, mostly from the town of Deraa. -By November thousands of Syrians travel across the Turkish border to reside in 6 major camps established by the Turkish government to accommodate refugees. 

2012, March-December -The Bekaa Valley in Lebanon becomes a major destination for Syrians seeking refuge. -Thousands cross the Lebanese border to escape hostility in Homs, Zabadani, Quseir and Hama.  -During this time, thousands of Kurdish Syrians travel to the Kurdistan region in Northern Iraq. -On April 4th, Domiz Camp is opened officially for Syrian refugees and becomes the largest of its kind in Iraq.  -Nearly 200 000 Syrians flee to Lebanon and Turkey in order to escape fighting in Aleppo. -Greece reacts to the influx by strengthening border patrol. -In July, up to 40 000 refugees travel to Lebanon to escape fighting in Damascus. -In September up to 11 000 Syrians cross into Turkey, Jordan and Lebanon to escape escalating violence over the course of 24 hours.  -In December, influenced by worsening living conditions and lack of resources, 40 cases of TB are discovered amongst refugees living in camps in Lebanon, with two testing positive for MDR TB.  2013, January-December -Thousands of refugees suffer through some of the weather conditions in years, facing extreme storms with minimal resources.  -Bombings in Beirut provide prominent evidence that the Syrian conflict has transgressed borders once more. People identified as Shia Muslims are bombed throughout 2013, with the number of victims in Lebanon hitting 100 by the end of 2013.  -By mid-July nearly 6000 Syrians per day are traveling out of the country to flee the conflict.  -In August, nearly 20 000 Syrians cross into Iraq to seek refuge.  -By November, it becomes evident Greece is conducting operations around unsealed Turkish borders with the intent of removing Syrian refugees. In the same month, Bulgaria begins to build a border-fence to prevent the crossing over of Syrian refugees.  -By the end of the year, a shocking polio outbreak in Syria spurs an eradication movement where 23 million children are vaccinated in order to prevent the spread of polio.  -In mid December, the UN announces 75% of the syrian population will require humanitarian aid by 2014. The amount of money needed to provide sufficient aid is estimated at 4.2 billion dollars.  2014, February-April -10 000 children in Lebanon are announced to be suffering from intense malnutrition, 1800 of which are at risk of immediate death. -On April 3rd, 2014, Lebanon receives its 1 millionth refugee.  -24 hours later, Iraq announces its first case of polio in 14 years. The condition is tested to exhibit the same characteristics as the virus spurred amongst Syrian refugees. 

2014, June-December

ISIS CAUSES REFUGEE CRISIS 

-As ISIS captures Mosul in Iraq, an estimated 500 000 people travel from their homes across the country in June. -Days later, IS declares that Syria and Iraq belong to the Caliphate. The organization aims to erase national borders under the Islamic State. -24 hours later it is announced approximately 1.2 million Iraqis have been displaced. -ISIS thrives in Syria as the most “successful” rebel group, having taken control of Syrian oil. Less than 30 days following ISIS’ takeover of Syrian resources, American president Barack Obama authorizes airstrikes in Syria. -ISIS militants attack Kurdish border-villages between Syria and Turkey, influencing nearly 130 000 Kurdish Syrians to flee the violence in September. -In October, Jordan is reported to restrict entry of Syrian refugees past the border. 

-Kobani is besieged by ISIS in mid October, causing 400 000 Kurds to travel across the border and into Turkey. Civilian executions are reported. 

-By the end of the year infectious outbreaks due to poor living conditions in Lebanon’s Bekaa camps cause the spread of Cutaneous Leishmeniasis.

2015, January-Present

-The exodus of Syrian refugees has not quelled since the conflict in Syria first arose 4 years prior. Refugees in conflict areas in Syria continue to pass through to Lebanon, Jordan, Turkey, and Iraq and Yemen, despite the separate conflicts in latter countries. -2015 has additionally seen the influx of Syrian refugees attempting to cross into the EU via dangerous methods of crossing the Mediterranean sea and at the mercy of careless smugglers. -71 refugees including children were found dead in an abandoned freezer truck in Austria. It is thought that the smugglers abandoned the truck while the people inside suffocated. -52 refugees were found dead in a smuggler’s ship in Italy. -Another smuggler’s ship headed for Europe capsized off of the Libyan coast, resulting in the death of 180 people. -In this year alone 2500 refugees have died attempting to cross the mediterranean in order to reach the EU. -The most recent refugee crisis manifested itself at the Macedonian border in August. 

6000 refugees have died in smuggling attempts to cross the EU states borders in the combined years of 2014/2015.

Sorry to break it to you but Lexa actually IS a big part of the racism on the show. Is she the sole cause? No. Is she the most racist part of the show? Nah,  the killing and torture of PoC is pretty revolting. But to try and imply there is absolutely nothing racist about the white girl who had a WoC killed off to make room for her, the white girl who has her skin intentionally darkened to the point that people believe she is a PoC, the white girl who wears a bindi, the white girl who has Maori tattoos, the white girl guest star who the writers are spending more time developing and talking about at the continued expense and sidelining of PoC leads??? That’s a tad delusional. 

But never mind, there is absolutely NO racism here folks! It’’s all clear! It’s just bitter people who are looking for reasons to hate on the poor whites! People trying to discuss the racism with Lexa’s character are really people who are “just spewing out nonsense to justify their hate for Lexa.” we hate Lexa and Clarke so much that we built a time machine to go back hundreds and hundreds of years and INVENTED systematic racism, genocide, cultural eradication and colonialism! All so that our darker features were considered ugly and “savage”, so that our marginalized cultures could be stolen from, disrespected and appropriated by the whites and so that we could use our lifetime of pain and mocking as a ~petty excuse~ to, as you so poetically worded it, “spew out nonsense” to hate Lexa/Clarke! It took me less than 20 minutes to find posts written by PoC about the show’s racism specifically in regards to Clarke and/or Lexa. A bit of research can go a long way before you start making claims that no one who is having their culture appropriated cares! 

funfact 2: You can go on the #YouKnowWhoYouAre hashtag on twitter and see a lot of people from yesterday talking about the show’s racism and *gasp* Clarke and Lexa might be mentioned in a couple of tweets because it’s almost as if they are two white characters who benefit from white privilege or something. funfact 3: Clarke is one of my favourite characters on the show (if not my favourite), and yet I am able to separate my love for this non-existent character enough to realise the show is offending a lot of fucking people with her s3 costuming, with her White Saviour™ story lines and with propping her up at the expense of other PoC characters. I’m sure if you try REALLY, REALLY hard, you too can at the very least acknowledge that there are ////some//// problematic aspects to both the costuming and characterisation of your fave mayonnaise ladies.
