Do you really think you can trust Nessa and Kat to deal with Ash?

Of course. They are not just the leaders of the coven and the pack, but they are also my friends. I know I can trust them.

I can only place my trust in Kat and Nessa. I will not break any laws or do anything rash. I will respect what my alpha, the founders, and my friends decide is best.

He knew that most of the department had a problem with not eating in favor of the work that needed to be done. He respected it, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t pop in every once in a while. “I mean, I was going to bring cinnamon sticks but I didn’t know if you wanted a sugar coma or not.”

“Stuff crust pizza and you take me out for sushi sometime and we will call it a trade?” Kelsey replied with a chuckle though her blue eyes fell back down to the computer for a second. “You found the common secret of people who will work for food. I do love my sugar comas though. I live on baja blasts when streaming.”

Matty smiled softly at his roommate. “Thanks, like, I hope so. I mean.” His hand reaching out to take hers, giving it a gentle squeeze. He wasn’t sure how to reassure her that things would be okay. This conversation was bigger than anything he’d had to deal with before and possibly ever would. “I’m not going to get hurt. Besides,” he said, reaching up to knock on his head, “I’m pretty resilient.” 

“You’re welcome.” She replied with a small smile and squeezed his hand back. She was lucky to have Matty really. “You are. But it wasn’t resiliency that saved me from the curse, Matty. It was dumb luck. You know I still don’t know why I got to live. I am sure that Kyle thinks the same thing... For someone to die so young... It is tragic. She was a beautiful young woman. She was going to do amazing things. I even thought that she might study at one of those Ivy League schools on practically a fully scholarship.”

“There is a difference between being a night person and being foolish asking for trouble, is there not?” Virgil countered with an arch of his brow in her direction. “Perhaps, for your own safety, you should be a night person that remains indoors during these unholy hours. After all, all kinds of unsavory characters come out during this time.” Could he have been referring to himself? It wasn’t clear. When she mentioned the pack, the vampire took a drag from his cigarette, shaking his head to himself. “I don’t understand the hierarchy of your species, pup.” Nor did he truly care about the inner workings of a werewolf pack, but he opted to leave that detail unspoken, but clear by his tone.

When she shot back at him with a sarcastic response, he blew the toxic smoke from his mouth. His breath wasn’t warm, due to the fact that he no longer lived, but the cigarette smoke was, so when it mixed with the winter night air, it created an even denser fog around the two. “Is that so? For someone who doesn’t care what I think you certainly are intent on disputing my opinions. Besides, I’m only stating the obvious and the factual. Words of wisdom and warnings, love.”

She heavily rolled her eyes and sighed. “Part of my job brings me to work odd hours. I don’t need some man trying to tell me what to do and thinking I am fragile and foolish when I am simply walking home. Perhaps for your own safety, you should shut the hell up.” The werewolf responded annoyed. Sure, it wasn’t necessarily the vampire’s fault. She was already irritable with her situation before the man decided to open his mouth. “You do not have to. But take it as I am the second in command when it comes to the pack here.” She stated whether he cared for it or not.

“I would tell you to save your breath, but I fear you like the sound of your own voice too much.” The werewolf responded. She didn’t need to care for his advice or words of wisdom. Kelsey had been through far worse than she let on. Hell, the blonde dared Ashlyn to try and show up at night. She’d rip her to shreds if the witch caught her in the mood that Virgil was surely creating.

Kyle knew that coming to Redmour and taking on a high position career would cause for familial issues. He had done his best to make sure Kelsey was safe, and though the two were busy with their lives and with their places in the pack, he still felt awful that they hadn’t had much time to spend together. After he revealed that Ash was in town, he watched as she caved into herself, and the darkness and anger that gripped at the older wolf only grew. That night, after he had told her, he shifted and mercilessly tore into a buck, regretting that he allowed his anger to control him in such a way.

Nevertheless, he sought out his sister, and he pulled up a chair from a neighboring desk. He smiled softly. “How are you fairing, Kels? I wanted to come talk to you as my sister and as my beta. I’m afraid that I might do something drastic.”

“I am fine. I have talked to Kat and Nessa about the situation you told me. I believe that they will be talking to the other founders if Ashlyn has not joined the coven.” Kelsey stated honestly to her brother. It was clear that she was taking both the fact the witch was in town and her role in the pack very seriously. Her bright blue eyes looked into her brother’s with slight concern as her eyebrows furrowed slightly. 

“Of course. You can talk to me as either. I will always be here for you.” The blonde stated before she asked, “What are you afraid you might do?”

Matty nodded, listening to her words carefully. The fact that she’d agreed to talk to the founders sent a wave of relief through him. “You’re doing the right thing,” the wolf said, not sure if to her or himself. Brows furrowing he scoffed, sitting back in his eat. “I’m not like, going anywhere. Dude, you’re stuck with me.”

“Thanks. I think it was good advice. You’re going to be a wonderful teacher when you get a classroom of your own, you know that?” She offered him a small smile before it faded quickly. The blonde shook her head. “Matty. Just don’t get hurt, okay? I don’t think I could handle it if you got hurt because of me.”

“She’s somewhat OCD.” And that was putting it lightly. “She wants certain things in a certain place and I’m the tidiest person on earth.” 

“Well. I suppose that is something that you will just have to work through together. Does she also have the compulsions like checking the stove 20 times to make sure it’s really turned off, or washing her hands until they’re scrubbed raw? OCD can be very hard to handle.”

Dominic barked a laugh at her words. In all honestly, he had figured as much. “Well then I guess someone won’t be borrowing my laptop again.” The founder shook his head, the amused smirk not leaving his face. “I hope I didn’t scar you for life, Kels.”

“There is going to be a fourteen dollar scarred for life fee.” Kelsey joked with a playful smile. It was clear that Dominic was both helping her get out of her shell and distracting her from the initial problem that she had been having.

James felt his stomach do a flip as guilt overcame him.  “Shit,” was all he could say.  After an awkward silence the older werewolf put his head in his hands.  “Shit Kelsey, it’s all my fault.  The trail ran cold a while back and I put the case on the back burner.  I shouldn’t have done that.  I should have found her for you like I promised.”

“It is not your fault, James.” Kelsey replied before saying anything else. “I’m going to talk to Kat and Nessa about it... I just... I didn’t expect to hear that Ashlyn was here and it really makes me worry for everyone. You couldn’t have known that she’d show up and like you said, the case went cold.”

“Fair enough.” Elijah dropped the subject now. “Yes, she is. And she’s only done it once before many, many years ago. So it’s a big change for her, she’s very… particular with her house.”

“What is wrong with her house?” The werewolf asked curiously. When she gained a roommate, she felt that the transition had gone rather smoothly.

Hannah was about to give her condolences, when the name froze her.  Ashlyn?  It…couldn’t be her Ashlyn could it?  In a very quiet voice she manages to choke out, “c-can you tell me about her?”  She could feel tears building as her heart dropped to her stomach.  Ashlyn could not be that common of a name in this town.

“She has blonde hair and dark brown eyes. Looks like she is in her 20′s. She’s sort of slim and the biggest bitch I have ever met.” Kelsey replied with a sigh. "If you have anyone you care about, I recommend just avoiding her.”
