It isn’t exactly a lie. Best to not show off his powers in case it came down to a fight.

She pouted a little at that explanation. “But you can’t exactly hear no sound; even the best hearing can’t do that. Which means that I probably have to refine my methods, great.” Or he had something else that explained it, that he wasn’t willing to tell her right away; but Blackfire was intent on making sure of knowing the actual reason. “Name’s Blackfire, by the way. And you are?”

Should he be worried about getting too chummy with a(n attempted) criminal? Probably. But whatever. He's bored, and she's interesting and non-violent.

"So is petty theft your end goal, or is this supposed to be the jumping-off point for your life of vice and villainy?"

He’d had the feeling that someone was up to something. He hadn’t expected making bait of himself to work this well, but there someone was, noiselessly getting close to him from behind.

Not even looking up from his phone, he waited until he was certain they were near his opened backpack before he spoke.

“Only tools in there. I guess you could make some money if you pawn them, but I don’t think it’d be worth the effort.”

Suddenly being spoken to, Blackfire just froze in position for a moment, as if to make really sure that he was speaking to her and not into his phone or something.

“It’s less the money I want, more a reminder that I managed to sneak up on, and unnoticedly steal from, yet another fool,” she then said as she landed close to him, since her chance here was obviously ruined. “How did you notice? I didn’t make any sound at all, as far as I can tell; and most phone users are absolutely absorbed by their little screen too.”

“Here’s some sagely wisdom for you: if ever you have to drop crime fighting for 6 years to take care of a little kid who turns out to be your long-lost cousin, don’t just jump back into that shit. You will get banged up.”

Ina snorted with a little grin. Her dimples appeared as she reached back to poke in return.

“I’m not gonna turn into a old grumpy bitch, tho.”

Cyrus nearly jumps. He’d known there was a person behind him, and he was expecting some kind of question because he could feel the curiosity radiating from them.

He was not expecting them to look the way they did. They looked like what you’d get when death got its heat shut off whilst in the process of warming over.

He’s caught up looking at them for a bit, forcing down the urge to mother hen them- he had a kid he sometimes looked after already, and also he was in the middle of a job.

He turns back to the building across the street that he’s scoping out, putting his binoculars back up to his face.

“I’m waiting for an opportunity.”

Under his inspection Ariel shifts from side to side warily, not sure what he was looking at. Admittedly she was dressed for much colder weather than she knew was going on. 

She had previously been waiting for an opportunity of her own. Shivering in place as she did caricatures for people. 

But eventually the group had moved on and she packed away her things, becoming curious about the man with the binoculars.

She does not want to say that that sounds ominous. But it does to her.

“G-Good luck then.”

She will still stick around for awhile. Nowhere else she has to be and this might get interesting.

He watches the exchange in the apartment across the street- the building was condemned, and the windows boarded up in such a way that it was hard to see in, but harder to see out. The money changes hands, one guy heads for the stairs, and he puts his binoculars away.

Mystery Kid is still here. He was probably broadcasting his urge to protect them- they’re in so many layers and still shivering and it’s not even that cold are they anemic?- but he never really figurd out how to turn it off. Maybe he couldn’t.

He pulls off his hoodie and as much as he just wanted to cocoon them in it, he just wordlessly hands it to them.

“I want it back when I’m done here.”

It’s another five minutes before the streetlights come on, and he slinks his way out of the alley towards a dark-colored minivan, crouching down behind it just as the guy leaves the building.

Hovering really helped in being absolutely quiet. It was a little game, to see just who all she was able to approach unnoticedly like that, and of course she wouldn’t be Blackfire if she wouldn’t take something from them as proof too.

So right now, she had hovered close already, and now reached out to grab some of the other’s possession to make it her own.

Cyrus had been aware of the presence tailing him for a while. And, yeah, the airspace was generally open to anyone who could fly, but he could only stand being followed for so long. What, he couldn't enjoy an early morning flight every so often?

"How long before you introduce yourself? Are you still working up the courage?'

He turns to the person and his senses lock in on them.

Looks human, but her brain wave pattern is off.

Red hair.

Cat-like eyes.

Orange, but not in the obnoxious spray tan way.

Tamaranean.

And here he was with a power ring.

Yeah, it was the greens who they really HD issues with, but if she knew of his affiliation, it could mean trouble.

BNHA!Cyrus

In similar fashion to my various other AU Cyruses, and in accordance with my latest obsession, here's a rundown of how he works in the BNHA verse

On the surfact, Cy is an empath, just like in most other verses. Here, though, the power is tied to his physical senses- he can see auras, hear auras, or smell/taste auras, but not all at once, and his empathy is limited by the sense that he filters through (can't see auras through thick smoke, can't smell auras if some other more powerful scent is in the air, can't hear auras if it's too noise). In the same vein, powerful emotions can overpower his physical senses- he tends to go blind in crowds if he tries to see everyone's aura for example. He usually sticks to his olfactory senses, since those aren't as distracting around large groups of people.

He has a family history of psychic and mental -based powers on his mother's side, while his father's side tended to have quirks that involved taking in and releasing energy from other sources- electricity, sunlight, and such.

His father has a a vampiric stockpiling quirk- he can absorb physical energy from other people, and he's able to copy certain physical quirks for a short time. Cyrus's powers more closely resemble his, except he absorbs mental energy, but his ability to replicate the effects of psychic and certain energy - based quirks is more permanent. He's picked up a form of tactile telekinesis, as well as the ability to interpret languages through skin contact. Using his copied quirks requires a great deal of energy, so he tends to rely on his physical abilities.

When he runs out of energy he'll basically be in a mental funk, unable to process much information or express himself very well until he recharges.

He'll slowly recharge throughout the day by absorbing ambient emotional energy, or can (but rarely does) quickly recharge by directly leeching energy from a person. If he does that person suffers from the same 'emotional funk' thing Cyrus would go through, for about an hour.

“Are you sure you’re okay?”

“You need to stop doing stupid shit like that or you will get yourself killed.”

“I’m your friend, of course I care!”

“You know I’m always here for you, right?”
