I've actually been thinking lately about spoon theory and I think I want to add something to the metaphor: the wall. The wall is the task you're digging through with the spoons. It can be dirt or rock, thick or thin, but it wears out the spoons all the same. Which is fine. That's what the spoons are there for, and somehow the spoons replenish themselves (at least occasionally) so if they break digging through that wall, that's okay. Sometimes, though, I find myself out of spoons but still in need of digging that wall. So I have to use my fingers. And the thing about trying to dig through a stone wall is that it fucking hurts. And not in the 'but it's secretly a virtue to endure the pain' way, but the bloody way, the way that rips at you and injures you and leaves you a little genuinely messed up afterwards. I often feel like, when I run out of spoons, it's technically not the lack of spoons stopping from doing a task. It's the animal part of my brain being justifiably and firmly against what it will do to me. The damage my fingers will take. The ways that damage is a lot more difficult to heal than waiting for more spoons to show up, however the hell they do that. I think a big part of my struggle is knowing when to dig anyway. To hurt myself for the sake of a goal. And I think for most people it's easy to say "well, you should never be doing that" but I pretty often find myself needing to use my fingers to dig through the wall of "go eat" or "take a shower" or "sleep despite full knowledge that doing so will make tomorrow come." And I think that's worth it, right? Because while using the fingers fucks me up a bit, not doing those things fucks me up a lot.
