That Ainât Witchcraft by Seanan McGuire Review
SYPNOSIS
The eighth book in the funny and fast-paced InCryptid urban fantasy series returns to the mishaps of the Price family, eccentric cryptozoologists who safeguard the world of magical creatures living in secret among humans.
Crossroads, noun:
1. A place where two roads cross.
2. A place where bargains can be made.
3. See also âplaces to avoid.â
Antimony Price has never done well without a support system. As the youngest of her generation, she has always been able to depend on her parents, siblings, and cousins to help her out when sheâs in a pinchâuntil now. After fleeing from the Covenant of St. George, sheâs found herself in debt to the crossroads and running for her life. No family. No mice. No way out.
Lucky for her, sheâs always been resourceful, and sheâs been gathering allies as she travels: Sam, fĹŤri trapeze artist turned boyfriend; Cylia, jink roller derby captain and designated driver; Fern, sylph friend, confidant, and maker of breakfasts; even Mary, ghost babysitter to the Price family. Annieâs actually starting to feel like they might be able to figure things outâwhich is probably why things start going wrong again.
New Gravesend, Maine is a nice place to raise a familyâŚor make a binding contract with the crossroads. For James Smith, whose best friend disappeared when she tried to do precisely that, itâs also an excellent place to plot revenge. Now the crossroads want him dead and they want Annie to do the dirty deed. She owes them, after all.
And thatâs before Leonard Cunningham, aka, âthe next leader of the Covenant,â shows upâŚ
Itâs going to take everything Annie has and a little bit more to get out of this one. If she succeeds, she gets to go home. If she fails, she becomes one more cautionary tale about the dangers of bargaining with the crossroads.
But no pressure.
REVIEW
It was nice to read some more stories about Antimoni Price, At first it was a little annoying when she kept going on about being the youngest Price and that nothing much was expected of her and blah blah blah but eventually that stopped and we got to see more of the smart and a little ruthless Annie Price.
We find out what the crossroads want in order for Annie to fulfil her bargain and Annie decides that itâs not something she wants to do not even when being threatened by ghosts and tortured by the crossroads. She still has a backbone and not even the threat of being tortured would make her do their bidding of killing fellow sorcerer James.
We find out more about Annie and how she tried looking into her powers which helped her to help James find more information on his, with the help of James journal they manage to come up with a plan to defeat the crossroads. All this is happening while Leonard Cunningham is hot on Annieâs trail and is also is Maine, with some negotiation and and some not very idle threats Annie and Leonard come to an agreement to take down the crossroads together.
No one is really happy to work with someone from the covenant but they all agree that it will benefit them in the long run, it was fun to find out that Leonard isnât as tough as he tries to be, there were instances in this boom when it seems that what Annie and the gang just take for the norm everyday may be a bit much for him and was even worst when he had to be a pawn and distract Bethany.
Annie shows that she can be the bigger person and doesnât hold Leonard being the enemy against him, well not too much but she does invite them into their temporary accommodation and even feeds him so thatâs something atleast and hey she gets a year free from the covenant searches as per her bargain with Leonard so atleast she can go home and see her family and hopefully get back her little colony of Aselin Mice.
Now i just have to wait until the next boom to find out what happens in the Incryptid world.
