Reflective diary-considerations

-What was the biggest learning that you took from the paper?

The biggest learning that I took from the paper was that User centric design should be based on the user’s opinion rather than me assuming what they need. That is why we need to meet users in person and keep doing survey. Also as Tristam said I have learnt person to person experience is important than just coming up with solution that is less interactive.

-What aspect of your project are you most happy with?

I am happy that I could learn from other students, tutors and guests. They all had different opinions and perspective but I have learnt many things from them. Obviously we had to change our ideas lots of times after hearing different opinions but as we have evolved our ideas the prototype got much clearer and stronger.

-What would you do differently?

If I had more time I would like to work on the design more. Although I am happy that we were able to change ideas up to the standard that users were happy with.

Idea evolvement summarization

1.Key point in Well-being life is being happy, being thankful about food and life. If food could be used to overcome your stress why not just make Well-being out of it. (It is okay to eat anything that would make you feel happy)

2.Eating confectionaries wouldn’t solve the problem therefore Well-being is about taking enough amount nutrition and eating healthy based on the right nutrition guideline.

3.Making everyday nutritious shake for the busy student that would be portable and also less time consuming. Thinking about cost, time effective ways

4.students need something more sustainable and also things that they can learn by themselves so they could keep cooking for themselves instead of relying on one thing. (Online Skype group cooking idea)

but thinking as a user even if cooking saves money and also provides healthy food they can’t use all of their time cooking for themselves everyday. Students needed motivation and also a platform to start cooking for themselves.

5.Through out the survey we were able to know that most of the students cook at least once a week if they were not in the hand in period although they replied that they do not eat when they are alone.

6.If there was a cooking club in Massey University, students will be able to cook together and also they could eat together after packing up and also for the people who do not want to cook they can buy food off from the cooking club so they could eat it in the campus while they are studying.

7.How could students who buys food from the club and the students who run the club both benefit from the system?. Thinking about logistics and strengthening the system.

8.How can we make the system more sustainable?. Maybe we have to advertise more in order to get more students to cook with the club this way more students could learn how to cook and later on they would be able to cook for themselves.

9.What would make students who didn’t join the club feel belonged and welcomed?.

10.Actual Well-being part is having a dinner together in campus so they don’t eat alone even if they wanted someone to eat with.

11.Most of the users said Tussock sucks because they feel like a business to them and they are not friendly at all. By having a difference to tussock they said this prototype would success. Think about quirky, fun stuff so students can be more into the system that we have.

As users wished we thought more about casual, simple concept that would appeal to students.

User test prototype: What is Well-being?

On this day we have talked to mark about our prototype. He said we should think about how we deliver our message across to people and also he didn’t like the fact that there were too much writing on the application. Although Mark said that he also tend to not eat food when he is alone (VALIDATION)

One of the guest speaker on the day also liked the prototype it self but she said to think about Foodie time( cooking club) as a place which provides homely, accessible, cheap and healthy food where people could easily approach and enjoy together.

After the feedback from the guest speaker we began to think about what is homely and how could foodie time provide those kind of environment.

3rd exchange session

We had few students who talked about their project. A girl in the fashion design was doing about ocean waste and she was making a garment made of recycle materials. A girl in the industrial area was making a portable cookie heater and a girl who was doing spacial design was doing about multiple people Dwelling housing and she was wondering what she could place in the park in order to make people come together.

We had not much chance to talk to each other due to the limited amount of time that we had so I only had to talk about the ‘eating together in the common area’. It was an idea that we wanted to trial prototype on people and see what they thought. Basically our whole ‘foodie time’ user journey hasn’t change but instead of making students take away food and go back to their home if they wish they could join foodie time club members in the common area and have dinner together. This way we are able to make them connect and also learn from each other. ‘Instead of running foodie time like a business why not continue to keep that people connection and relationship for the well-being?’.

Student’s feedback was that if common area thing was really happening they would want few long desks so people could sit together and feel like they are part of the group.

Think about winter time as well as thinking about summer time. If it is an outdoor common area it might be a bit cold in winter so look for the common area within the campus.

They wanted more interactive, engaging experience instead of just having a conversation starter because if we have a conversation starter they might just see it and not share questions with people around them.

Think about how we make people engaged .. such as flip calendar, random question cards (would you rather sit on the couch or a chair?).

Think about having interactive table so they could draw on it while they are eating. Maybe it could be a video so they can hear questions and answer them while they are eating?.

By talking to Jay I was able to hear more of user’s perspective. Luckily all of the members liked the idea and they said Tussock sucks because they feel like a business to them and they are not friendly at all. By having a difference to tussock they said this prototype would success. Think about quirky, fun stuff so students can be more into the system that we have.

Tristam’s feedback: What is actual well-being?

After speaking to Tristam I was lost because he said our prototype feels like a business. First of all we didn’t think it is a business because all of the profits go back to students who purchases food but after Tristam’s feed back we had to go back to students in order to find what they really wanted.

Some of the feedbacks that we have got was that students wanted something that made them feel special. Such as...

-They didn’t want prototype that is similar to Tussock

-They said Tussock sucks because it feels like they are just there to sell food

-They wanted personal relationship with the club/ they wanted to be welcomed

-Instead of taking food away they can eat together

At this point we began to think about what would make students feel belonged to the campus and the cooking club it self even if they didn’t join the club.

Benefit of the cooking club

After many people’s opinion I have focused on club advertising and the benefit of the club.

Donald sees that the system works out fine without the reward system but it is also fine to have reward system as well.

He said do not get into badge design so much because it isn’t our final solution for our project showing 3-5 resolved badges would be okay.

Try to concentrate on what the app might look like and also what are the brand colour and the style of foodie time is.

At this point after getting feedback from Donald saying that the system of the foodie time works fine without the benefit we began to think about colours and the concept of the app. Although by this point we were sure about using casual, funny concept to engage students.

Inter-relationship is there a way to get students involved into cooking? (Sustain club?)

After talking to Jason we changed our system slightly and made cooking club run at night time. Jason also said to think about benefit of the cooking club and promote it more so students could hear about it. Jason said to make the app more accessible.

After discussion session we focused our selves on promoting the cooking club.

Prototype discussion student opinion

So we have given 5 feedbacks to other groups as it has been recommended at the beginning and have got 4 other feed back for our prototype from people. Jay will write official feedback from Jason(tutor’s feedback) later on but here are some feedback from others

-what if I don’t want today’s menu?

simply you don’t have to buy it if you don’t like it. Whole point of running cooking club is to provide other students with healthier and cheaper food but also if you buy ingredients in bulk you will be able to save money as well therefore cooking another menu doesn’t seem necessary unless the cooking club gets massive.

-Where do I pick up?

We have mentioned it on the ordering section page and also after the payment it reminds you once more where to pick up the food so I think it should be fine but just incase if they do not pick up in time notification will be sent to their phone just to double check with them.

-Advertise benefit of the cooking club ex excitement of the learning and socialising promotion

Will do, since we have only focused our self on the foodie time app it self and to the students who are purchasing food so we haven’t got that far yet but because club members will be taking cooking club because they are passionate and they love to cook not because they want benefit out of it but surely there would be things that could reward them somehow other than earning money by selling food and getting left over foods.

-I think you need roster beforehand so cooking club members know what to do

As mentioned above still working on cooking club system more but we will look into it more

-’It looks fun I would use it if it existed of course tussock is expensive and I want more option’

Validation from student

-Maybe hold workshop to get people interested in cooking club?. For instance hold workshop on club’s day? or maybe occasionally twice a year

we are thinking about how to advertise cooking club more and if we were going to hold open workshop we will let others cook easy food and ask if they have enjoyed the workshop session by survey and encourage them to join the club.

Most of students said that the cooking club is a good idea but they wanted to see more promotion such as posters or advertisements in order to recruit more students to cook with them and learn from each other.

At this point we were focusing more on the students who are going to buy off from the cooking club but after this prototype discussion session we focused ourselves more on the student run cooking club so everyone could benefit equally.

Cooking club idea

While we were thinking about the ways to benefit both of the users (the ones who wanted to cook, and ones who wanted to eat decent food but couldn’t be bothered to cook) we have came up with cooking club idea.

This way we are able to satisfy both users

If there was a cooking club in Massey University they can get little bit of funding from Mawsa and also even if they have paid for their own ingredients it would be cheap because cooking club will be buying bulk of ingredients. Also students who are in cooking club will spend a bit of time on cooking but they can benefit from the price, socialisation within the club, clean environment, Sharing cooking recipe & tips, getting assistant while they are cooking, they can eat healthy homemade food in decent price and they could do club activity as well.

Food packaging idea that I had before had few issues

1. I couldn’t do this idea because there was logistic problem on storing food at school (security problem, space problem) 2. I couldn’t do this idea because It was time consuming. (trying to pack everything, receiving money from students, checking app for order, deliver package to students)

Process: We thought what if cooking club provides their food from cooking session to Massey university students. By using an app university students can order dish that has been made in cooking club (S,M,L size) and after they pay with credit card they can pick up the food ordered from the club area. If students do not have credit card they can pay with cash when they pick up.

Benefit of the provider (cooking club members): They can learn, enjoy their cooking experience with members and also earn money in their clubs account by selling the food that has been cooked from the cooking session. Also when there is a left over food from the cooking session they can take it away and have it at home. Also they could go out for dinner with club members with the money that they earned.

Benefit of the receiver (university students): They can buy healthy, decent amount,hopefully tastier, cheap food in university. They do not have to make an effort to go out from university. It is another food option that they can take.

-You don’t have to worry about storing food because cooking club members will cook on the day that they receive groceries, so it will be fresh and also there wouldn’t be any left overs.

-Even though club members cook same menus (imagine there was 10 dishes of fried rice) they don’t have to worry about eating it all because they will sell it to university students and also from the money that they earn they can eat something else later on (ex. going out for dinner together, cooking special meal for each other).

-Secure because it is within university

-It is a win win situation for both

This is the point that we came up with strong idea about cooking club but complex in a way because there are two users.

Survey for cooking Validation+student’s opinion

Every students had different opinions but general thoughts were

They knew they had to eat healthy food but they were happy with what they eat

Surprisingly all of them cook at least once a week

but when it was hand in week 3/10 didn’t cook and also amount of cooking decreased. Which showed students do not have time when they were in exam week.

Their budgets were different but as a student they want decent food that would taste nice and also cost effective.

Surprisingly except for one person everyone said they would be motivated to cook if they were doing group cooking.

Through out this survey we were able to know that all of students cook and also most of them would be motivated if they cook in a group

but in other hands few students said they wouldn’t cook more even if they cook in a group but they still wanted decent, cost effective food.

Thinking about barrier: cooking idea

There are 5 issues that stops students from cooking

1. Lack of motivation and time This would be when they have groceries in the fridge but because they don’t have time and they Feel that they don’t have to cook just for now they do not cook

2.Lack of cooking skill and motivation This would be when they can’t cook therefore because they don’t know how they are lack of interest and feels like they don’t have to cook because they could buy food instead of cooking

3. Lack of ingredients and time This would be students who wishes to cook but because they don’t have time they couldn’t go on grocery shopping therefore they can’t cook even though they wish to. Therefore they buy food outside urgently and cooks when they buy groceries.

4.Limitation on cooking environment This would be students who wish to cook but because of the horrible cooking environment they can’t cook or don’t want to cook. This situation would include flatmates not washing pans and dishes and if you wish to cook you have to do dishes for them to use the kitchenware that you wish to use. If the environment is real bad you might be able to see bugs crawling out of your flatmate’s unwashed dishes.

5. Limitation on group cooking environment This would be students who knows how to cook but doesn’t cook and eat when there are no friends around. They feel less hungry when they are alone and some of them feels like they have to eat when there are peer pressure. In order to make eating environment they need to invite friends to their house or get invited but because most of the students lives in flat there are lots of restriction on inviting friends around for the meal. Normally cooking with group would be hard because kitchen is normally small and also there are too many people living together therefore you get limited space anyway.

By this stage I was definite on the cooking idea but we were deciding if it should be a group cooking or cooking guide for individuals.

Brainstorming for user centric design

What are the healthy food option that students could get outside?

I would say healthy fruit smoothy shop that sells salad such as tank, habitual fix. Pita pit and subway where you can choose what you eat and how you eat. There is also salad bar located in lower hutt called V2 salad and also some local cafes which provide you with a healthy food option. There aren’t many but there are some places where they provide health conscious food the issue here is it is too far from the campus area.

As a designer we cannot cover every issues that students have but as we brainstormed we thought cooking could be one way to save money and eat healthy and tasty foods. In order to cook students would have to go to Saturday or Sunday market to buy decent vegetables and fruit but because it is too far, time consuming and also time limited not many students tend to do it for themselves. Also even if they have bought some groceries from local supermarket they tend to leave it in the fridge because they can’t be bothered and they don’t have time.

We can’t do anything about the some student’s time limitation and on their ‘I can’t be bothered to cook’ mind but the things that we could provide them would be motivation on eating healthy foods and encouraging them to cook making it clear that the cooking isn’t a hard process and everyone can cook healthy food that they wish to eat.

Brainstorm that has been done on 26th of Friday.

We have brainstormed what is stopping uni students to eat healthy food. At the moment the problem would be that the food place around campus area are mostly takeaway or junk shops. Which is unhealthy but in a way it is good for busy students because it provides cheap, fast and assessable food.

but because students don’t have enough time they are likely to buy food in tussock but as most of the students think tussock is expensive (Comparing to 2 for 1 deals and lunch deals around town). Environmental issue: lack of healthy food option

Even the grocery/ convenient shops around campus focus on selling small things such as chips, fizzy drinks, some dairy options and it is hard to see health conscious food or vegetables around. The closest supermarket for Massey students will be Countdown which isn’t that close at all. Limited grocery shopping areas around campus

There are other option like food truck that comes to the campus every hand in time but it doesn’t mean food truck provides students with healthy food option. To be honest it is tasty but indian curry, chimney cake isn’t healthy at all. Food truck needs to sell something more healthier

Some Students replied regardless of how healthy the food is they rather eat something that tastes nicer. They understand Junk food is unhealthy but because it is tasty and also affordable they tend to eat it more than the salad which would cost them much more money. Stereotypical mind about healthy food being tasteless Salad isn’t filling, meat salad is expensive

Change of thoughts: considering online group cooking experience

Pimping other team’s idea session

Emma and Celia (other group) thought online skype group cooking would benefit students

1. They can connect

Eventhough many people have their favourite friends by the time they are in 3rd year yet they don’t have ‘many’ friends or some wish to know more people by connecting people this way they could cook together, share process and also get a nice end result

2. Cooking dummies could cook as well

If people help out during the cooking process it will be easier for the cooking dummies. At least they don’t have to be confused while they watch famous chef’s cooking video and try to copy what they are making.

3. It is enjoying

Well it will depend on people but by sharing tips and having chat while they cook the process of cooking wouldn’t be so boring.

4. It is accessible for anyone/ there are no time restiriction

so if they miss any recipes they wanted to cook they could still go back to official website and see the video. What is different to the existing cooking videos on youtube??, they can watch what people struggle with and they would be able to get some tips and how to go through things by them helping each other.

5. Recipes will be healthy

Because brief exists for people who struggle to eat healthy and want to eat healthy obviously recipes that is going to be shared will be reasonably cheap (under $10 to make) and also less time consuming (things that could be done within 15 minutes) and also healthy (ingredients wouldn’t be things that is unhealthy for you).

Emma and Celia said people who tend to eat healthy cares about gluten free, dairy free option because they are restricted to eat glutens for their diet or sugars for their health (like vegans and vegetarians)

This is when we thought group cooking might be more closer to the 5 ways of Well-being.

Nutrition shake is a good idea but for students they need something more sustainable and also things that they can learn by themselves so they could keep cooking for themselves instead of relying on one thing.

Making healthy shake

After having an exchange session I was definite on making healthy shake for students. The reason why I wanted it to be shake was that it was PORTABLE and also LESS TIME CONSUMING for students. Generally students said that they feel like they do not have enough time to eat or they couldn’t be bothered because they were too busy.

Also by making fun flavoured shake such as ‘hang over shake’, ‘stress free shake’ I assumed students would like it because it is fun and causal not like other nutrition shakes out in the market.

It is a shake that is specially made for students and the concept it self would appeal to them easily.

2nd exchange session

19/8/2016 Friday- I went to the exchange session and I had to change group just to even the number out.

There was 1 guy doing fashion and 3 girls from VCD and 1 girl from spatial design.

-A guy doing fashion said he wanted to design romantic chef uniforms. He thought well-being happens when he cooks because it makes him feel good and happy so he wanted to design something that people could wear while they were cooking. He said that the material is going to be something like table cloth and he will exaggerate folding bits on the uniform to make it more dramatic.

-A girl doing Spatial design said that they didn’t have any brief but they learned how to use software and programs in order to design what they want in computer. She hasn’t got much about to talk about but she said she will probably look into moderate density dweller housing in city.

-Two girls doing visual communication design said that their project is a bit hard to give solution because their audience is introverts and there is nothing to do for them as a designer. The best we could do is probably encourage them and say it is okay to be an introvert/ it is okay to get stressed at little things. Lily who is in other group said that she will probably look into the other girl’s brief on how to make introvert audience confident about themselves while they are living in the city.

After presenting my idea on ‘how can we as a designer make healthy eating easier, convenient and time affordable for students’

and showing them possible solution that I am thinking about ‘branding 3 types of nutritious shakes for the busy students to drink. (which would be stress release flavor, hungover flavor, daily flavor all of these shakes are going to be in different colors and flavors)’

I have got some good responses people saying..

“I would buy it just because it is hungover drink”

“I agree with this topic because I have ingredients in my fridge and I haven’t cooked for three days”

“I think this brief is for me because I have bad eating habits and I always buy food outside, I am just about to buy one now”.

It was good to get validation from other students who doesn’t know my project and It was good that they all have thought about this issue at least once in their life as a university students.
