Bsd AU where Atsushi is sent to the Great War as a solider and Yosano is sent as a medic.
Atsushi was an enigma to Yosano because he was the only solider that she’s ever met who she can’t use her ability on.
He had been pretty upfront about it from the moment they’d met. Taking a scalpel from her hand and letting her watch as the cut from it healed in seconds.
Not healing because that wasn’t regeneration but something else. She shook her head when Atsushi was about to explain what happened.
“I want to figure it out myself.”
He looked at her confused by the request but nodded all the same. He let the subject drop and change to the new poem Shunzen had read them last night.
At first Yosano had thought Atsushi’s ability was some kind of miracle.
She would tend to the screaming, sobbing shells of the soldiers around her. With the heavy feeling of relief in her bones that Atsushi wasn’t on the list of patients.
But as time went on Yosano realised that Atsushi was just as cursed as she was.
Atsushi was always tired. Exhaustion clung to his bones even when he just got up from a nap. He was never hurt so he was almost always on duty during the day.
And during full moons he would not be permitted to rest until the next day.
She would wait for someone to barge in and carelessly toss his unconscious body on the ground after Atsushi had changed back from beast to man.
Yosano would sit by him on guard and not let anyone else try to rouse him for duty until he was rested and fed.
It was the only bit of care he was allowed to get and she fought for it every chance she got.
Atsushi wouldn’t even remember what happened but would obediently eat his rations and listen to Shunzen’s account of the nights events.
If he wasn’t there personally he’d get the reports back and read them to him.
The worst though when Atsushi was hurt, when a bullet managed to hit him or a piece of debris impaled him. Yosano would scream for assistance but for him no one would come to his aid.
They knew he’d survive it and that was enough for them. As long as he could still fight Atsushi was worth something to them and it made her sick.
What was worse was that she couldn’t do anything either. Atsushi would have to take out the bullet himself because only his claws could cut through his ability.
Yosano would sit by his side, holding his hand for comfort but sometimes she wondered if it was for him or for her benefit.
Shunzen would try to lead her away after and at first she would argue against him. Until she realised Atsushi was acting so tough because he didn’t want to worry her.
The moment Yosano left his sight were the only times Atsushi would allow himself to cry. But even that was muted and short lived because in his own words he’d felt worse.
The others didn’t get much time to recover but Atsushi got even less because in their eyes he’d got off easier.
Yosano would deny that to her grave but no one listened to her.
If she was their angel then Atsushi was their demon and both of them had to suffer for it.
Yosano to create that immortal army and Atsushi to be the first solider that couldn’t be killed.
