Erwin Smith has had a hard life:

Unintentionally endangered his father, ending in his death (and was tortured by the same faction decades later).

Has been in the military for 20+ years and has seen everyone bar his two closest die around him. He may have to make a decision at any moment that may change that.

Has been commander for 5 years, which is an achievement in itself. He’s seen so much on the field he doesn’t even flinch anymore. 

He’s been misconceived as heartless and discarding his humanity due to keeping a mask that hides the man underneath. He could never maintain morale as simply Erwin. 

Almost: assassinated, shot by his old trainee comrade, eaten by a titan, framed and hanged at the gallows. All for progress.

Is essentially an enemy to everyone with power, bar SL in some shape or form; he’s opposed the government, nobles, politicians, monarch, and of course– titans and the titan shifters. 

Continues on with his demanding job despite his injuries and the doubt of others. Barely rested in recovery before he was set for more pain.

Says he’ll pay off his debts in hell but is already living in one created by his own guilt and self-loathing. He remembers every life lost under his lead and is haunted by his decisions.

Regardless of everything, has been trying to do the right thing the entire time and is one of the only people in this world with power that tries to.

Please Isayama, let him see his dream.
