summary: Kalim is more complex than most people realize, and even he isn't immune to negative emotions. during a quiet night, he spills his guts about not feeling enough, which leads to a heart to heart shared between you both.
pairing: kalim al asim x gn! reader
tw: mentions of neglect and toxic family life
note: this is lowkey a character study, and I hope I didn't botch Kalim. I do think he's more complex than we realize, and I really wanted to give him a space to unpack that. I love Kalim sm, he's seriously underrated.

No one really saw past Kalim’s sunny smile and joyous disposition. To the world, he was a naive, overly happy, spoiled son of one of the most rich merchant families in the world. He had important ties, his own cousin being the prince of the Scalding Sands. Many people liked to use Kalim’s personality to their advantage, it didn’t help that he was so willing to give everything he had away. Yet if anyone took a chance to look deeper, you would start to see the cracks in the foundation.
While Kalim was the firstborn son, it doesn’t mean that he got much love and attention from his family, as not only did he have caretakers, but five siblings followed him shortly after. Kalim learned that he had to smile all the time, to be happy, because if he showed fear, sadness or anger, his younger siblings quickly latched on to those emotions, and it could have disastrous effects. His younger sister scraped her knee? He’d smile brightly, calling her brave as he handed her a lollipop as the attendants cleaned and bandaged it. His younger brother was sad because they hadn’t seen their father in a long time? Big hugs and smiles as he takes him on an adventure to get his mind off of the lack of attention their parents gave.
Outside of Jamil, Kalim had learned from a young age that many people did not care for him outside of what he could offer them. During elegant parties hosted by his families, the older folks would comment on what he would inherit in his future, side eyeing his clothes, his jewelry, and him as a person. While he was mainly taught in his home, the times he did try to bond with other kids his age, they’d all ooo and awe at his jewels, and ask for food, or money, and if he didn’t give them what they wanted they grew disinterested.
Even Jamil wasn’t truly his friend, but an indentured servant who was tasked with caring for Kalim. Kalim wanted nothing more than to befriend Jamil, but Jamil couldn’t look past his anger and hatred towards being put in such a position, and blamed Kalim for all his problems in life. It was unfair for all parties involved (though it was more unfair for Jamil than anyone else).
Then you came into the picture. Kalim treated you like anyone else, with enthusiasm and joy at the thought of a potential new friend. His first thought was to shower you with parties and parades, because if he didn’t entertain you, would you leave him too? Yet you were different. You didn’t take every chance to accept more of his money, you didn’t bask in the parades and parties. In fact, you would pull him away, in a secluded, tucked in area and get to know him better personally. When he tried to lavish you in extra jewelry he had, you merely put it back on him and would say something along the lines of–
“It looks better on you.”
In fact, you introduced him to something he wasn’t used to. While he loved his siblings with all his heart, he wasn’t stupid. He noticed the tensions they felt as they grew, the disdain they may hold for him as the oldest. He also loved Jamil, he wanted to believe with his whole heart that Jamil genuinely cared for him back, but he couldn’t ignore the sighs, nor the looks of annoyance sent towards him. But who would like him if he showed that it affected him? Kalim didn’t want to be alone, so he did his best to just suck it up and take everything.
Then you did something no one had before. You always looked at him with genuine curiosity for what he had to say. You would ask him what he preferred, and why. You would sit with him even if there was no party, nor parade, or even adventure. He didn’t have to always be loud, or enthusiastic, or have to do anything to keep your attention, you just…cared. You seemed to genuinely like him, and it made him all warm and fuzzy and made him up his antics even more than normal when you were around. He couldn’t help it! He just loved you so much it made him volatile! He was always so giddy around you he felt like a volcano about to burst!
Yet things started changing. As his fondness and love for you continued each day, the thought of not seeing you felt suffocating, you started to drift a little. Not in a big way. You still smiled brightly when Kalim was silly, you would still link your arms together, or greet him with a giant squeeze of a hug, but your eyes would drift. Your time spent with him felt shared, no longer something sacred shared between you both.
Kalim loved you, and he loved Jamil, and seeing you both get along so well made his heart swell with joy. It was all he could ask for, two of the most important people in his life also like each other. So why did it hurt him when you turned your focus away from him when Jamil would enter the room? Why did it ruin his mood when you smiled when mentioning something Jamil told you? Why did it feel like he was losing you when you never even left his side? He wasn’t used to such unpleasant emotions swirling within him. Everything else he could handle, the neglect, the fickle, the feeling of never being quite enough. Yet this, the questioning, wondering if he was enough, if you’d grow bored and it just took you longer to come to the same conclusion as everyone else.
It was eating him alive.
He found himself clinging to you more, absorbing the amused smile you sent his way each time he’d cling to you more. He’d make sure your favorite dishes were always present when you were around, hoping at the very least you would come back for the food. He was honestly a chaotic mess. To the untrained eye, he was just acting like normal, sunshine incarnate, but you noticed. You always did. You noticed the way Kalim’s smile would strain, like he was mourning something he had yet to lose. The way he would beg you to stay more and more often, like he was never going to see you again. You hated it.
It was growing late, Kalim’s sunny temperament hadn’t died down in the slightest as the two of you laid side by side. You watched on silently as his smile dimmed, not from being unhappy, just the need for rest finally catching up, his ruby eyes drooped as your heads rested on pillows. Yet that one question that had been gnawing on you slipped past your sleepy mind.
“Are you okay?” You ask, fingers curling by your silk pillow, eyes taking in the housewarden across from you.
“Of course I am,” Kalim smiles, his own hand inching closer to your own, the urge to hold it itching him. “Why wouldn’t I be?”
“You’ve been acting strange recently,” You explain, shifting your head to get more comfortable. “I just wanted to make sure you were alright. It’s okay if you’re not, I don’t mind listening.”
Something in him cracked at that. The way your hair fell around your face, the two of you under his blanket pulled up to your shoulders. He really, really, really didn’t want to lose you. You had become someone so special to him, and he cherished you more than he could ever realize, and he couldn’t hold it in anymore.
“Do you like me?”
It came out like a scared animal, hushed and vulnerable. Something that was so unlike him.
“Of course.”
Your reply was instant, not an ounce of hesitation. You cared for him so much, and you didn’t want him second guessing that.
Kalim’s hand inched towards your own once more, your pinkies brushing as his eyes settled towards the contact, “Sometimes I feel like you’ll grow bored of me.” The admission was honest, coming from a deep place that had been slowly bleeding for years that he kept covered with his reassuring smile and naivete.
Your heart clenched, eyebrows furrowing at such a statement. Linking your pinkies, you contest his negative thought, “I’d never grow bored of you. I like you Kalim, more than you realize. I never want you to think otherwise. I love spending time with you, because you are so kind, sweet, and caring and you make me feel seen in ways no one else has.”
“Really?” He asks, eyes peering into yours, trying to find any hint of deception (he finds none). “Because you make me feel that way too. You make me so happy, I never want this to end.”
“It may change,” You murmur, shuffling a bit closer. “But it doesn’t have to end.”
“Will you stay with me?” Kalim can’t help but to ask, also shuffling closer to you, his hand wrapping around yours. “After we graduate, and if you haven’t found a way back home yet. Would you come home with me? I’ll make sure you’re well cared for.”
“I already am well cared for,” You grin, kissing the back of his hand, effectively melting his heart. “I’m honored you’d bring me with you.”
“Of course I’d bring you!” Kalim pouts, your faces merely inches apart, you intertwined hands pinned between you both. “I don’t know what I’d do without you.”
“Would your parents be okay with that though?” You question, doubts creeping in. As much as you’d love to imagine a sunny paradise with Kalim by your side, things were never that simple.
“They’ll have to be,” He huffed, finally relaxing as your warmth seeped into him. “‘Cus if you can’t come back with me, then I’d just follow you.”
“I love you.”
The words left your lips without permission, but you meant it wholeheartedly. Kalim’s grin brightened, no more doubts and insecurities pulling it down. A great weight finally lifted off his heart, and he couldn’t stop himself from letting go of your hand to wrap you in a giant hug.
“I love you too!” He exclaimed, burying his head in the nape of your neck. “I love you so so so so so much! Let's have a huge wedding! With peacocks, and elephants! I’ll make sure no one can doubt how much I love you.”
You can’t help but laugh, slightly flustered at both Kalim being so close, as well as him already planning your marriage. It seems that that answers if you both were confessing as friends or not (not that you minded).
“I don’t think anyone can doubt that,” You smile, arms wrapped around his torso as you nuzzle your face into the top of his head. “I only ask that you don’t doubt my love either.”
“I won’t!” Kalim shouts, pulling away slightly to meet your eyes, his face deadly serious. “I’m sorry for doubting you before, it won’t happen ever again. I promise.”
“I believe you,” You chuckle, pressing a kiss to his cheek. “Now let’s go to sleep, I’m tired.”
“Okay,” He murmurs, falling back into place and snuggling as close as he can to you. “Can you sleep over tomorrow too? And the night after that? This is really nice.”
“Sure,” You agree, fingers carding through his short hair, the lull of sleep slowly claiming you.
A pact, you had a pact with a demon. You were in hell and had a pact with a demon, wonderful, the dream of any ordinary human.
But something was troubling you: what exactly was a demon? Because you weren’t sure. You were still scared; you had the feeling that anything could kill you, but at the same time… you looked at the demon sitting a few seats away from you in class, Mammon, with whom you had made the infamous pact.
As far as you understood, he was the most powerful of the brothers after Lucifer, with abilities that made any demon tremble, and yet… How on earth had you managed to make a pact like that with him?
Had his sin consumed him? Was he simply a slave to capitalism? You sighed. You were completely lost and didn’t know how to proceed from here. What were the best ways to survive?
Still staring at the demon of greed, you accidentally knocked over one of your notebooks, which fell to the floor. Cursing under your breath, you quickly picked it up, and when you stood up, you met Mammon’s blue eyes. Was he paying attention?
He looked away before you could draw any conclusions, but since you had nothing better to do (because you weren’t paying attention to the class at all), you decided to watch him closely.
You could see how his muscles were constantly tensing, as if he were ready to move at any moment. His ears twitched at the slightest movement; you even tried tapping your fingers to confirm, sure enough, that his ears were following the sound. And his pupils dilated and contracted depending on various factors, as if he were adjusting to always be able to see.
It seemed as though Mammon was ready to move at any moment, to spring into action if necessary. He was aware of everything around him, and you couldn’t help but think he was also aware of what was happening around you. As if… as if he were trying to protect you.
The bell rang, and the demon approached you with a scowl “What were you staring at so much, human?” You couldn’t help but smile “So you really are a demon” He blinked, confused “What does that mean?” You shook your head and stood up “Let’s go eat” After that, you left the classroom “Hey!! What does that mean?!”
I know I'm not the only one who thinks Caleb's third myth is strange, doesn't quite align with what we know about Caleb, and I think I just figured out why. And that's because they've changed the fighting style of our "brother"
Each boy has a different fighting style and this one doesn't change, it just becomes more flashy, but you won't see Xavier use firearms in any of his myths because this man is a swordsman, regardless of the size of the sword.
Something similar happens with Zayne; his fighting style isn't hand-to-hand combat, he throws his evol or hisc magic, so it's not so strange that he gets a bow in his third myth.
Rafayel, in his first two myths he fights with daggers, in the third he uses a trident, but it is still a similar fighting style.
Sylus gradually transitions from a direct melee style to one with more distance throughout his myths, as in the third one he uses a cane as a "magic wand", and in the dragon myth you see a combination of both.
However, Caleb trades his pistols and cannons for a sword; it's a very abrupt change and it feels strange.
Could it be that there really was a sixth boy to whom this myth belongs? Another swordsman? I don't think we'll ever find out.
But this is just my way of seeing it, what do you think?
¡I'm just finished season 3 of Record of Ragnarok!
And I'm on the lookout for fanfics, but not just about the husbands, I want to find fanfics about the Valkyries.
These women are not receiving enough recognition for sacrificing themselves for the sake of humanity.
And yes, ror is an anime "for men", where the only things that matter are epic battles and Aphrodite's balloons (She is a goddess of war, she deserves to be more than just a fan service).
Does anyone know what's going on with the new Obey Me game? Ugly designs, nerfeds personalities, an option to dress-up boys in the ugliest clothes imaginable...
Are the developers bankrupt or what? I know the team had problems that forced them to finish the first and second versions of the game (original and NB) But coming back with this quality feels like a desperate attempt to exploit what's left, and that's truly sad.
I love the game, I love the characters, I would love to experience married life and for them to expand the world, to learn more about the devildom, but if it's this is the quality it's not worth it. I'd prefer they invest in the manga.
For me Showgirl is an album about saving your own life and part of the process of doing that being having to let other people help you save your own life and also letting other people love all of you not just the bits you think are loveable
My new theory on the brothers new rooms is that they are not meant to be a permanent arrangement.
In other words, they still have their old rooms at the HOL and these are just their arrangements to be closer to where they work. It makes sense, the HOL is considerably far from the main part of the Devildom, and Mammons doesn't look like it's in the Devildom at all. Or at least, not the area around RAD.
It would make more sense for these to be assigned rooms /buildings based on their known likes rather than entirely their own choice. That would explain why Lucifer bed is like that (other than him being extremely drunk when he designed it) and why Asmos room doesn't look comfortable to sleep in and why Beel lacks any personality whatsoever.
If the rooms are based on someone else's perception of them- It fixes the lack of personality we know from them.
Lucifer would not get a bed modeled after his own horns, it's tacky. But what would someone who doesn't know him as anything as the Avatar of Pride think? Someone as cold and unfeeling as him could never share his bed, he must sleep in a coffin sized bed.
Mammon's room is pretty much the same except bigger because he never shuts his mouth, so everyone knows basic things about him.
Levi has no anime merch beside a single Ruri-hana plushie. He would never give up his precious figures. Being known as the Admiral of Hells Navy and Lotans master? We'll he must live underwater. And people say he sleeps in a tub but that can't be true. .....Let's put in a tub just in case-
Satan is a mini library. That's all people really know him for, being dangerous and visiting every library in the Devildom often.
Asmo. Is the Avatar of Lust. So they made his room look like a love hotel. Im going to murder whoever reduced him to just sex and removed any possibility of comfort in that room. Every aspect of it is meant to entertain. And that fits the *image* Asmo presents himself to the Devildom with. But it doesn't make sense for it to be his choice, especially when it's a room he's meant to share with MC. It doesn't have a single visible mirror, it has no flowers or anything that Asmo has in his bedroom, the place where he feels most comfortable to share about himself with MC with.
I swear to god and the devil if Im wrong and that was something Asmo chose to live in for his marriage and the writers don't explore him being insecure that MC won't love him without his sex appeal Im going to kill someone.
Nobody knows much about what Beel likes apart from food and sports, so they naturally came to conclusions he must be an outdoorsy guy. I imagine it also might be because of the plants we saw in his work room, so for his job he needs to collect plants, and thus, the closest place to put him is in a cave.
Belphie likes sleeping, his job is to be an astronomer probably, just make the room beds with constellations, boom done.
I listened to the ' The Fate Of Ophelia ' many times and I came to a conclusion:
In my opinion Taylor wanted to use Ophelia's story as a metaphor to describe her relationship with fame (which is why in the video she shows the routine and various moments of the day of a showgirl instead of OPHELIA's DEATH and that's it).
Taylor is Ophelia, Hamlet is fame, Laerte the other showgirls who are present in the industry.
It makes sense in my opinion because Taylor entered the music industry when she was young and naive just as Laerte describes Ophelia.
Taylor was manipulated by people in the industry just like Ophelia was manipulated by all the men in her life (and here we can add the second meaning of the song, less poetic where Taylor was always judged for the many boys she had around).
This relationship she had with industry and fame was toxic and drove her crazy..
The lover she talks about at the beginning of the song is not Travis (he can be if you look at what I think is the second meaning) but it's the fans, who didn't let her end up in oblivion but ON THE CONTRARY, they followed her and followed her.
The 'memories' she's talking about are the albums she recovered, that we have always listened to and we have helped her in some way to get them back (supporting the tour, supporting the TV)..
" You were just honing your powers " understood that we have become more supportive? Understood that we never abandoned her, maybe. Understood that we are looking for Easter Eggs and we have also become good at it?
So she used Ophelia's death as a rebirth thanks to the fans, but it could be her end if she didn't make a record and didn't create her own fanbase.
Oh my god, why is everyone taking an emotional metaphor so badly?
If you are reading this and you know who Taylor Swift is, you will know that this woman has released a new album, her first single is titled "The fate of Ophelia".
And for some reason everyone has decided that everything in this song is wrong because it has nothing to do with Hamlet, It should have been a surprise?
The fate of Ophelia does not literally speak about the tragic heroine of Hamlet, Taylor draws a parallel between the character's emotional situation and her own.
"You pulled me out of the grave and saved my heart from the fate of Ophelia"
This is a direct response to "The Prophecy" of TTPD
Taylor is not Ophelia, Taylor saved herself from her own tragedy when she lost control over her own music, Taylor has the autonomy that Ophelia lacked.
The song is not literally about Taylor being a princess saved by a prince, but rather about a battered and abused heart that at the last moment is saved from drowning in despair and sadness.
Let's remember that these songs were written in the Eras, Taylor didn't yet own the original masters, her 6-year relationship was over, and every night she had to give it all in the Eras show, her heart could not have been more plunged in misery.
So yes, for me the emotional parallel is correct.
Now, people are angry because Ofelia would never have been saved by one of the men in her life, which is true, but what would have happened if someone else, someone new, had prevented that Ophelia committed suicide? What would have happened if Ophelia had survived?
That's the perspective of this song, what would have happened if someone else had pulled Ofelia out of the river and helped her gain the autonomy she needed? It doesn't have to be a man, we decided it's a man for Travis, but what if Ofelia had been saved by a friend? Would this song continue to be so criticized?
I think it's also REALLY notable that the music video HEAVILY featured an orange bird, like the one in Beata Beatrix. (Also notice the hair, re: the boat scene)
This painting is of the artist's late wife, Elizabeth Siddal, a prominent model, as Beatrix from Dante's Paradiso. The bird is holding a white poppy, symbolizing her cause of death related to her laudanum addiction.
You know what ELSE Elizabeth Siddal posed for???
In fact over the course of posing for Ophelia, Elizabeth almost froze to death because the lamps heating the water went out. Determined to be a perfect model, Elizabeth didn't say anything, and the artist, so absorbed in his painting didn't notice.
Think about this incident in contrast to the inspo for the cover of the album and what Travis talked about on the podcast, about how intense her post-tour recovery was and how much care she needs and deserves. She is likening her post-show bath to Elizabeth posing for Ophelia more so than Ophelia herself.
I think the "fate of Ophelia" is suffering for your art and the inspiration of others, without anyone caring to notice. Then Travis comes and is (metaphorically) like "are you okay? You look cold"
I've reread Elizabeth Siddal's story, and I'm increasingly convinced that "The Fate of Ophelia" is about her and not the character of Hamlet.
Elisabeth was the eldest daughter of the Siddal family, her family had money because her father owned his own business and swore that they were descended from nobility: The eldest daughter of a noble man, Ofelia lived in fantasy.
Elisabeth is not only the quintessential model of London Pre-Raphaelitism, she was also a poet, and after marrying Rossettie she starts learning with him and also becomes a painter.
So Elisabeth Siddal is an artist in her own right as well.
We can't talk about Elizabeth Siddal without the incident with the painting of Ophelia, where Elisabeth almost froze to death because the candles went out: Pulling me into the fire
Taylor is in the bathtub and Travis lights the candles that had gone out, saving her from Ophelia's fate = Elizabeth's fate.
I also want to mention that Elisabeth and Rossettie's relationship was not all roses, he feared that Elisabeth would be judged for her origins in a working class family, which made him delay marriage, added to this was the fact that Elisabeth suspected that Rossettie wanted to replace her with a younger model, which was true, which contributed to worsening his illness and the succession of depressive moments. -Information taken from Wikipedia by the way.
More than Shakespeare's Ophelia, it is Elisabeth who suffers from depression aggravated by her lover: But love was a cold bed full of scorpions The venom stole her sanity
The fate of Ophelia It is the death of the tragic artist, not the suicide of Shakespeare's heroine. At least that's how I ended up interpreting it.

Chapter 8 and I think we're all celebrating that wedding didn't happen. 🎉🎉🎉Thanks Jeremiah, you've done something good this season.
Because yes, it's the only thing the boy has done right this season, because in his conversation he has made it clear to us how hypocritical he is. "I was hoping you'd be honest about Christmas," says the same boy who had no plans to tell her what happened in Cabo, making it clear that this was his revenge.
Belly finally seems to be going to Paris, and I love this because it's going to be a big change for her and finally, for the first time, she's going to be able to get to know herself away from the Fisher brothers.
She herself says in this chapter that she doesn't know who she is without Jer, it's not healthy.
Although the best part was Taylor's confrontation with Belly, a little late for me, but she finally told she what we've been thinking about all these last few chapters.
And Conrad has finally received the reality check he needed, without being able to retract, facing the consequences.
It has been cathartic.
I just hope the new episode isn't about Belly missing her plane for Conrad or anything like that, because I need that girl to go Paris alone, without any of the guys around.
I need someone to name the Anti-AI art movement we are currently experiencing.
Thousands of artists are placing hidden memes in their digital art so AI can't steal it.
Musicians creating songs like the bunnies on the trampoline.
And in literature there is a "silent" boycott against publishers that use AI both on covers and in texts. And I say silent because literature is currently closer to fast fashion, with readers who look more at quantity than quality. But that's another topic.
In 1916, Dadaism emerged as a rebellious response to the sociopolitical moment of the time. This is our Dadaism, artists defending what makes art so special and unique: the soul and work they put into each project, something you won't find in anything made by an AI, no matter how friendly GPT Chat or any other AI may be.
As an art history enthusiast, I would love to see this period in history books.
I'm watching "The Summer I turned Pretty" And it really bothers me to see how many girls are hating on Belly in scenes where she is limited to being a teenager or just a human being. Don't get me wrong, there are times when I can't stand Belly, especially in the second season with Susana's death, but how can you hate a character for scenes like fall to the ground by accident?
Especially when they defend male characters tooth and nail.
And you won't see me say that Belly is okay with romantically messing with two brothers, but they are not Belly's victims, they both lend themselves to this dynamic.
Conrad being depressed and absent because of everything that is happening with his mother decides to get romantically involved with Belly at the end of season 1.
The result is a strained relationship with his younger brother, his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend, and an inevitable breakup.
Jeremiah agreeing to be in a relationship with Belly 2 times, knowing the crush she always had on his older brother.
After a broken heart and a strained relationship with his brother the first time they broke up, they return to the same outcome 4 years later and with a wedding that neither of them really wants.
You can't completely blame Belly when both brothers decide to participate, neither takes a step back, neither refuses Belly.
Honestly, if Jeremiah didn't have that one-sided competition with Conrad, I would believe that both of them would accept a three-way relationship if that makes Belly happy.
Although I don't think Belly is capable of being in a three-way relationship.
Anyway, if you're going to criticize a female character, ask yourself, "If she were a man, would I criticize her just as harshly?" If the answer is no, my friend, you are being sexist.
Maybe it's just me but I don't understand why they gave us a wedding-themed banner when there's still a 6th guy left to come out. And we know there will be one more boy.
I mean, I love the outfits, the hairstyles, the dynamics of the event, but they are never going to repeat a banner with this theme, just like they don't repeat the one about the cats or any of the previous ones.
It would be great if they did reruns of past events including Sylus and Caleb that they weren't in. But maybe it's just me speaking out of envy.
