A piece that I did for Student Alliance for Mental Health (SAMH) Carleton University’s Masterpieces of the Mind art gala. ____________________________________________ Artist’s Statement: Shannon O’Brien-LeBlanc *TRIGGER WARNING* Title: The Black Ribbon This piece of prose was adapted from the artist’s suicide note in which she tried to attempt suicide three times. Hospitalized with nothing but a pencil and sudoku puzzles, she wrote this poem from fragments of her minds reflections. This poem is about the tolls that depression takes on ones mind and that it is a silent, but devastating disorder. She revisited these fragments to compose this visual poetry piece, hoping that it will bring awareness to mental illness and to encourage others struggling with mental illness to use poetry as a form of therapy. The canvas serves also as a symbolic reference to the fact that the artist tied her wrists with black ribbon during her attempt. This in a sense is what saved her and to this day serves as an important reminder for the day that changed her life. The background mirror allows the audience to reflect about themselves while reading and to see that depression does not make you who you are. Medium: white calligraphy ink on satin ribbon Materials used: glass calligraphy pen fitted with .35mm Montegrappa italic nib, mirror, calligraphy ink, ribbon ____________________________________________ The Black Ribbon Black billows surround her once innocent mind. Fuelled by fear, feeding off anxieties Spewing out hopelessness Despair from her very soul. An innermost darkness fills the very being, That has the misfortune of being consumed. The world is black and grey, No other colour of the spectrum in sight. Pebbles gradually gather up the mountain Until the weight is just too much to bear. Pebble mountain, of triggers and stressors Which rapidly transform into Mount Everest of turmoil. Her mind snaps like a brittle twig The pebbles come tumbling down, crushing her body and soul. Spikes of cold metal pierce into her wrists As pitches of wailing whispers deface her soul. Swift spirits coil around her, Slowly squeezing the life out of her. Virtuous butterflies soon transform into ravenous snakes, Filled with toxic acrimony, longing for blood. The aroma of ferrous oxide fills her nostrils As tints of red liquescent Drip slowly down the lack of flesh Still remaining on her. Cold is all she feels, Deadness in her very soul. As the black ribbon ties her sanity together
#Freshmeat Tips:
You need to get low, but you shouldn’t lean over your knees when you’re in the pack. If you can rest your hands on your knees with minimal bending in your arms, you’re about where you should be. If you can rest your elbows on your knees, you need to quit slouching quit so much. Stay low and keep your spine relatively straight.

My new tat which I got after I was released from the hospital after attempting suicide (three times).
It represents my love for writing and calligraphy, which acts as a therapeutic method for my depression, anxiety, OCD and BPD. The ink is my blood and the quill is my vein, symbolizing that writing is the passion which flows through me.
It also reminds me of my past and all of the difficulties I have faced these past few years, and represents the beginning of my new life. <3
My cousin and his wife, who went missing in Afghanistan a few years ago are now the center of media attention after videos were released of them pleading for help from their governments. However, it might not be all that big of a priority for government heads rescuing their own Canadian and American citizens from the hands of terrorist groups such as the Taliban.
My uncle said: “It would be no more appropriate to have our government turn their backs on their citizens than to turn their backs on those who serve,”and for once I agree with him.
All lives should be treated as equally valuable and we should do everything in our power to preserve them.
And for all of those individuals posting vulgar comments regarding Josh and Caitlain like “I pray for their deaths” and describing them as “Taliban loving tourists”, well, unless you know them personally and I know for a fact that both of them are kind, generous people who simply wanted to help others in need. I do get offended when people speak ill my family and I’m sure that anyone else would feel the same if the same thing was done to them. It is easy to hide behind a computer screen and spread hateful comments, without fearing that anyone could see your face. However for families (including myself), hearing those words hurts more than you can imagine. You should never judge a person unless you have walked a million miles in there shoes and understand the challenges they face on a daily basis.
We miss you Josh and pray for your safe return home
