âAhh,â I said, leaning back in the chair.Â
She sat the notebook on the arm of the couch and I noticed that she had divided it into two columns with the word âBOYâ at the top of one and âGIRLâ at the top of the second.Â
âDo you have any ideas?â she asked, looking at me with big brown eyes that could have made me walk off a cliff if she asked.
âWh-? Ah. Er. No,â I stumbled, âNo, I donât think that I do.â
Dora groaned, hanging her head, âNeither do I.â
âWell,â I said, actually thinking now, âyou had mentioned naming a daughter after my mother. I mean, if you still want to. Thatâs just something you said earlier...A...start, you know?â
Her head shot up and she reached for the notebook, managing only to knock it into the floor.Â
âHere, let me,â I said, picking up the paper and taking the Biro from her. I then wrote âHopeâ in the girl column. âSo, thatâs one girl name,â I said, looking back at her, âwhy donât we try to think of one boy name?â
She nodded and began thinking, âWell, we named Teddy after my dad and you, so...thatâs that covered.â
âRight,â I said, âthe three year old asleep in the other room is already named.â
Dora swatted at me and I jumped back a bit, chuckling. âDonât be an arse, Lupin,â she said, narrowing her eyes.
âWhat about Alastor?â I offered.
She stopped mid-swat and looked at me, âFor...for Mad-Eye.â
âHe did train you,â I shrugged.Â
Dora sat back on the couch, âMore than train me, he...I mean...weâd have never met if not for Mad-Eye.â
Sensing that she was growing a bit emotional (something she would surely blame on the pregnancy hormones), I reached over and put a comforting hand on her arm. âNot so much of an arse now, am I?â I teased with a smirk.
She rolled her eyes and brushed off my hand. âAlastorâs good. Heâd like that, I think,â Dora said.Â
With her decision, I wrote âAlastorâ in the boy name column.
âWhat about your friends?â she asked.
I shook my head, âWhat about them?â
âYou lost so many in the war. Wouldnât you...I mean, you were so close. Shouldnât we--â
âI suspect that Harry intends to name a son after James,â I shrugged, âI mean, that could be a while, but I wouldnât feel right using that name before his own son gets a chance.â
âWhat about Sirius?â she offered.
I couldnât help but laugh. âSirius?â
âYeah. I mean, he was your best mate and my favourite cousin, seems right doesnât it?â she reasoned.
For a moment, I just stopped to think. It did seem right. Sirius was a big part in both of our lives, not to mention our life as a couple. Moody may have brought Dora into the Order, but it was Sirius who actually introduced us. Sirius was the one who encouraged me to spend time with Dora. It was fitting. I nodded, âYeah. Yeah, Sirius would be a good name.â I wrote âSiriusâ as the second name in the boys column.
âI donât know about other girl names, though,â Dora said, rubbing her chin.
âAm I to assume that âNymphadoraâ is off the table?â
ââNymphadoraâ is so far off the table that itâs unaware that a table even exists,â she said with a glare.
âWhat about âAndromedaâ?â I asked.
She shook her head, âNothing against Mum, but thatâs...I mean...her family and all. Not to mention that itâs just so damn formal. Can you imagine taking a little âAndromedaâ to nursery?â
Shaking my head and going back to thinking, I said, âWhat about Molly?â
âShe has so many children,â Dora said, frowning, âItâs almost like Harry and James, you know? Iâd love to honour her by giving her name to our daughter, but...â
âI understand,â I said, crossing my right leg over my left one and balancing the notebook atop my knee, âIâm sure Molly would understand as well.â
âOh!â Dora said, springing up, âWhat about Professor McGonagall? Sheâs such a badass. I mean, a war hero, headmistress, took on Merlin knows how many Death Eaters, who wouldnât want to be named after her?â
I scratched my jar, thinking, âShe doesnât have any children, either, so...not really any competition for naming.â Nodding, I wrote the name âMinervaâ in the girl name column.
âIs that it then?â she asked, looking at the list, âHave we named our kids?â
Looking at the list, there was a pair of male names and a pair of female names. âWell,â I said, shrugging, âwe have names. We donât have to decide on the names for sure just yet.â
Absentmindedly, she rubbed her barely-showing belly, âI like these names, though...I mean, if you do.â
I nodded, looking at the list, âWhat order, do you think?â
Without a second thought, she said, âHope Minerva.â
Smiling, I said, âThat didnât take much time.â
âI told you,â Dora said, âI wanted to name our daughter for your mother.â
Nodding, I offered, âThen how about Sirius Alastor?â
âI like it,â my wife said with a nod, âDo you think theyâll like it?â
âItâs a fair bit better than âNymphadora,ââ I said, with a wink.
âCheeky git,â she said, swatting at my foot.Â
I turned to a blank page in the notebook and wrote two names in script before turning the book around to allow Dora to read it.
She did so aloud, âSirius Alastor Lupin and Hope Minerva Lupin.â
My stomach did little flips both times she read the word âLupin.â No matter how many times I hear it or read it, it still makes me feel giddy to realize that Iâm actually a father. I wondered if that was something that every other dad felt.
âI love them,â Dora said, smiling broadly.
