Wild that people are out here making posts about how Ilya is actually the one going through it at the end of TLG because clearly the Russian press would be 10,000 times worse, when the ending of TLG is from Ilya's perspective and he never mentions once being concerned about the Russian press. And also, the problem isn't that Shane is the only one being outed, it's that he is suffering the entirely of the blowback from being outed that is mentioned on page: the press are only targeting him for some reason, no one will stand up for his legacy, he genuinely feels like no team will sign him, Ottawa doesn't give him any respect in joining their team, and Ilya has zero empathy for Shane and cannot offer any support to him as he goes through his entire world burning down other than to offer him a blowjob. But sure, let's invent ways that it is actually all about Ilya, again, because god forbid fans wish Shane could be given any support beyond an orgasm.
If Ilya, in the next scene, had wanted to talk to Shane about his depression and Shane's only response had been, "how 'bout you bend over so I can finger you? that cheers you up" I guarantee those fans would be so upset about how callous Shane was to Ilya's struggles.
The problem is that Shane goes to Ilya and says all these canonical terrible things are happening to me and I'm upset and Ilya goes, let's have sex. Whereas when Ilya goes to Shane to talk about his depression, they have an actual conversation about it and Shane gives him emotional support and validation. He doesn't say, let's watch a goals compilation and it will remind you that you are too good to be depressed.
yearning for a Boxing Day fight fix-it fic that isn’t just Shane torturing himself because he’s ‘selfish’ and grovelling at Ilya’s feet and instead concentrates on how Ilya put his hands on him because that was absolutely wild even if the narrative waved it away as a-okay.
The problem I keep having is the more I go back to the text more I keep wondering what the hell else Shane was supposed to do. Like seriously, genuinely - what was he supposed to do differently that didn't involve either reading Ilya's mind or waving a magic wand to erase racism and homophobia?
Ilya wanted a Canadian passport and his contract was up, so Shane devised a plan that got him to Canada, to a team that would pay him his worth, and came up with a pretext for them to spend more time together and start to dial down the rivalry narrative.
Shane mentions how much he hates hiding and asks if Ilya is ready to spend another year hiding, and Ilya deflects.
Shane asks how Ilya is feeling, noticed he's struggling, and Ilya deflects.
Shane thinks about all of Ilya's trauma and gently suggests therapy, and Ilya shoots him down.
Shane doesn't leave Ilya to rot in Ottawa while he lives his life carefree - he's locked into a contract for three years longer than Ilya is (so Montreal probably offered him an 8-year contract while Ilya took a 5 year deal from Boston, both very normal choices) so it makes more sense for Ilya to be the one to move so they can be closer, and also, ILYA WANTS A CANADIAN PASSPORT. If Ilya had wanted to go for American citizenship, then that's a different story and maybe they should have talked about Ilya staying in Boston and Shane moving once his contract was up, but Ilya specifically wants Canadian citizenship and his contract is up first so it's an utterly moot point.
Shane asks after Ilya's mental health and gets stonewalled. He provides openings and opportunities for Ilya to speak up and gets rebuffed or Ilya doesn't take them.
Completely genuinely, what else was he supposed to do??? At what point are his communication issues actually the primary driver of their conflict???
oh my goodness WHO CARESSSSS
this is always the problem. someone tells jason (in canon and fanon) that bruce is trying, that bruce is doing his best-- framing their issues like it's jason's fault because he refuses to bend and buckle. they try to act like jason just needs to meet bruce halfway and it's his unwillingness to acknowledge that bruce is "trying" that's keeping their relationship so tense
but bruce ISNT trying. this is what he said before barbara said that:
bruce isn't trying because his solution is to make JASON try harder. bruce is saying the easy part-- simply telling jason to leave behind his vigilante identity, which isn't even a compromise because he expects jason to do what he alone wants. JASON has to try to actually leave it behind, to maintain a new one, to go back to the bat way of doing things. that's all on jason. bruce saying he'll help him find a better path means nothing because he isn't gonna be doing any of the heavy lifting.
what is the point of his apology if it means dust? all he says over and over in various comics is i'm sorry i failed you. okay, great. now what are you gonna do to actually make it up to jason because so far, you've only failed him further.
every time, jason is framed as the unreasonable one, like bruce is some kind of toddler and jason's being a big meanie by refusing to play games with him. why should the burden to fix their relationship be solely on jason? why should bruce "trying" be enough for jason?
bruce is not trying to fix shit if his solution is to make jason do everything while he gets to sit back and enjoy the end result. batman means everything to bruce to the point where his real relationships are impacted by it because he refuses to let go of that identity. yet he expects jason to let go of the red hood when the red hood means everything to jason.
but yeah girl, he's trying. stupid jason omg can he stop making everything so hard
i'm laughing at the idea of jason hosting his own low quality youtube version of 'to catch a predator' and making these over the top dramatic videos of himself, filmed by roy, pretending to chat online as a minor to get the jump on pedos
jason, looking at the camera: YOU GUYS. COME WITH ME TO SHOW THIS FREAK WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU PREY ON CHILDREN. LET'S SEE HOW THIS DUDE REACTS WHEN HE FINDS OUT HIS EIGHT YEAR OLD LITTLE BOY IS ACTUALLY A GROWN MAN.
and you have roy running with the camera, following jason as they go to the agreed upon meet up spot
----
roy making sure he gets all the angles of jason beating the shit out of the predators:
oh nooo they're sanding off this deconstructive character's edges and over-simplifying his motivations in ways that feed into classist stereotypes
i am terminally A Sucker for characters who have a towering and generally earned ego about their own ability and absolutely no self-worth about themselves as a person at all. intoxicating combo.
yeah so i covered up my son's death because it would have inconvenienced me...yeah by doing this i basically ruined all chances of someone pursuing justice for him legally...yeah im rich as hell and could have definitely not done this and instead gotten the murderer convicted. yeah no i covered it up instead. anyway so my son is back now :/ and he wants to kill the guy who murdered him but that's like really immature... well what do i expect him to do? what?? why are you even asking this :| obviously he should be fine with the guy breaking out of arkham on a routine basis :/ hell, he should get justice through legal means! doesn't he know only i can dictate when it's moral to break the law?
Jason's never allowed to successfully get 3 of the 4 tires off the batmobile like he did originally because it "feels too unrealistic" but tim is allowed to be the best hacker in the whole world at negative 5 years old and he knew every hero identity ever and hes the best robin better than jason and dick can do acrobatics better than anyone in the world ever even if they trained for as long as he did and hes the best robin better than jason and bruce is better at Everything and you cant beat him no matter what. But jason should only be in the process of taking the first tire when he gets caught. Jason should only get the hubcaps. Thid should definitely for sure be tagged bamf jason .
You know the worst part about Bruce not knowing what really happened in the warehouse, and so blaming Jason for his death, and as a result, Sheila's? It's knowing that if it were anyone else with Sheila in that warehouse, Bruce would not have rested until he figured out what really happened.
He would put on his "World Greatest Detective™️" hat and investigate the shit out of everything. No stone would be left unturned. Somehow, some way, he would uncover the exact details of exactly what went down.
But it's Jason, so he runs home to Alfred, and Alfred, forever Bruce's number one enabler goes "Welp, can't say I'm surprised. I could have told you he would get himself killed." and for Bruce, that's all he needs.
#i've said it before and i'll say it again#bruce didn't need to hide the truth of jason's murder to protect his secret identity#he had to frame the joker for the murder of jason todd and do it so well not even the joker could wiggle out of it#if he was going to tamper with evidence he should have done it for justice instead of against it#but the fact remains that through their relationship bruce prioritized himself over jason#his comfort over jason's safety#so that would've been too much work because what he cares about is to keep batman going. his son was secondary to that#and this is the same. he already knows who did it and that's the important thing
regardless of who started victim blaming jason todd first, i think we can all agree which characters benefited from the narrative the most
Roy: Idk about you, but me and Kori came here looking for someone who means the world to us. We came here looking for our Red Hood. Did I mention that he's someone who is very important to us?
No hate to personal headcanons or fic writers that do this, but nothing takes me out of a story faster than a line like: "Jason doesn't cry easily". Because yes he absolutely does, and it's one of my favorite things about him.
ive seen people say things like they genuinely dont care that jason died and they wish hed die again bc of how he treats bruce and its like. thats wrong on so many levels starting with the fact that you dont care that a 13 year old died
Hate how many official recaps will say Jason tried to take the Joker on solo. Like. That is not even remotely what happened. Hello.
I haven’t drawn my son in forever….
