An au I thought of a while ago now! Nightmare is haunted by the spirit of his twin (who isn't even dead) that never got to grow up.
Nightmare doesn't want to get attached but these little weasely mortals are there now and his brother seems very insistent on befriending them. The fact one of them can see him doesn't help with keeping the whole "I petrified my brother and now I speak for us both" secret.
