Between Riverdale and Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin/Summer School, everything Aguirre-Sacasa does is like auteur cinema to me. High school and suburbia as markers of insanity, leading to the most absolute absurdities, played absolutely straight so that the viewer is able to engage in the madness too. Homages to old slasher films and murder mysteries. Metanarratives about different forms of storytelling and media and how those inform our metanarratives about ourselves. You see what I'm saying? You catch my Riverdale drift, boys?

Not to mention that this show is DEEPLY misogynistic lmao. Like what do you mean you have a final battle at the end of s2 and you have the main villain and his two lackeys and so the gang splits up to fight them and your protagonist (who is CHARLIE btw not fucking Alastor!!) doesn't fight the main villain, doesn't even fight any of the secondary villains. Doesn't fight at all period!! She's not even the one that drives the action, she sees Emily contain the explosion and starts to help... like are we serious? This is so insulting...

Finished watching Hazbin Hotel and god, this show is SO ASS. It's not even just bad. It's INSULTING. Like I can feel my intelligence being insulted by this show.

Like this show is a kid's show, we all agree that that is the core of the problem, right? It is a children's show with a children's show morality that masquerades as an adult show just because it has sex and drugs in it. It is as if a 13 year old made a show and they wanted it to be edgy and cool because ooohh sex, oooh drugs, oooohhh violence, oooh swearing, but all they've consumed up to that point in their life is fucking cartoon network and disney channel so they cannot actually make a show that deals with those themes in a serious way, they can only create a children's show, with a children's show morality and ethics and endless endless teaching moments and moralising to the audience with some edgy elements to it. The problem is that this 13 year is old is actually 33... But a diet of tumblr and Steven Universe and "I don't watch adult shows because they’re not queer enough" and "your fave is problematic" will do that to you...

Hell, scratch that! I'm sure the 13 year old would probably do a better job with this concept. If my 13 yo emo self with depression was left in charge of this show, there would be a lot more violence and complexity I'll tell you that!!

The kumbaya, the good guys don't get angry, don't fight, are never problematic, etc. Everyone gets a chance!!! Because everyone is friends with each other BULLSHIT gets old so fast, but it becomes downright insulting when a) this show wants to deal with harsh themes such as genocide, and literally solves the anger of the genocided people with... a song. Also, the people who were doing the genocide were not bad and evil guys!!! Well, maybe one of them, but he's dead! (No, our protagonist didn't kill him she's uwu pure women are weak and cannot fight) and b) this show attempts to parade itself as an adult show, even a teenage show and then it never allows characters to be angry and vengeful and mad and violent and messy, except the bad guys, until the inevitable moment they get redeemed because the audience loves them lol.

Like that is insulting to me and to my intelligence lmao. Art made for adults should not merely include swearing and sex, but it should attain some level of emotional and intellectual complexity. It should raise questions, it should engage your brain, it should show some grey morality at least. It should allow room for interpretation and for uncomfortable feelings and for messiness and should have you coming to your own conclusions, even when the author has an agenda (a lot of media obviously does) it should show it, not outright tell it to you!!

I'm so SO TIRED of media not daring to deal with any sort of emotional or political complexity!!! You decided to put those complicated topics into your show!!! Stop shying away from actually dealing with them!!! It makes it worse when you put a band-aid on the whole thing and go "look, the characters said sorry to each other!" It's fixed now and not consider trauma or complicated human emotions...

I'm sorry i can't get over in hazbin hotel when the guy who is a drug addict victim of an abusive pimp who rapes and exploits him talks about friendship or when the weapon manufacturer lady (a sinner, so presumably she was also a weapons manufacturer on earth!) sings about saving the day with the power of love to the angel who was formerly participating in a genocide. Also, the literal princess of hell acts like a crying little girl, she's the cute innocent one of the group in an anime. Most of them outright refused to kill people in the final battle of s1!! Hello??

Like, these people are messy, some of them are/were evil, others are/were in very bad situations, allow them to have messy mentalities and personalities and not have their personalities reduced to the personalities available in kids shows!!!! Let them be grey and complicated and blood-thirsty?

And it is a show that does include sex, violence, murder, alcohol and drugs etc. Like it is very much an adult show, it's just that the character's mentality is incredibly childish, dare I say because the creator's mentality is incredibly childish as well.

The type of animation person who got stuck watching Steven Universe and never progressed further in their thinking because "adult shows are too violent/boring/never progressive enough" so they never bothered to consume any media for adults. So you end up with a show that wants to be edgy and cool and mature because it has graphic sex but in which the character's act like they're in Cartoon Network. Love the concept, but it's hard to watch.

Oh also, from what my girlfriend says of this and the creators' other show, apparently they're a bi woman and a gay man (so I was told) so the male character favouritism shines through the fucking roof and these people will include sapphic women and lesbian couples but not include any shred of lesbian sexual desire, meanwhile gay and straight characters do express that, loudly, like they know intellectually that we fuck but they cannot conceptualise a woman expressing sexual desire for another woman. Probably because they don't even know what we'd do in bed lol or why that is something that is desirable to us. It's not because women expressing sexual desire is icky, there are women in these shows who do... towards men. All lesbians/bi women do is be emotional.
