Temptations of Metal
Description: Taking place after the Red Lotus trying to kidnap Korra in Zaofu, sheâs overly anxious and feeling rather down and she is comforted by a pretty guard captain sheâd met just days earlier. Ships:Â Korvira... hints of Korrasami A/N: this is based off my headcanon that Korra and Kuvira had some kind of interaction during her time in Zaofu and became friends. Enjoy. ---- Her time here in Zaofu had been anything but a vacation, what with the Beifong drama alone, not to mention the Red Lotusâ timely arrival, Korra didnât have much time for rest. She inhaled slowly, her chest expanding as she took in as much air as possible before slowly releasing it, hoping to calm the pounding in her chest. More than anything, she wished she was back home in the Southern Tribe, and she wished she could see the stars in the sky beyond the metallic dome that was meant to provide safety.Â
All they provided her right now was a bigger cage with fancier toys, she had always been trapped, in the southern compound, on air temple island, in Republic City, the spirit world, and now here in Zaofu.Â
âI guess I have a thing for falling right into traps..â She whispered softly to herself, pulling her legs up to hug them against her chest. She stayed that way for a moment before a hand fell to idly run her fingers through the thick green grass she was sitting in. The week hadnât been all bad. She had some good food, learned a little more about metalbending and all the cool stuff that a person could do with it, and sheâd made a few new friends, one of them happened to be Zaofuâs seemingly overly serious (and not to mention extremely attractive) guard captain. Everyone had urged her to go to sleep, to get some rest, but after hours of tossing and turning she decided to sneak out and get some fresh air. There was no way sheâd be able to fall asleep after what happened, her heart hadnât stopped racing and she just kept thinking to herself what would have happened if her friends hadnât realized she was gone, if no one realized sheâd been taken. What would they have done to her? Killed her? Tortured her? To what ends- âWhoâs out there?â The voice snaps her out of her panicked thoughts, but she doesnât move from her spot, she simple raises her head before she answers with the smallest, most dejected voice. âItâs just me. Itâs Korra..â She still doesnât move, but her eyes do widen a little as the figure makes her way around the corner and over to the patch of greenery where the waterbender was hiding, âIâm sorry, I couldnât sleep and I just wanted to get out of my room and get some air, I didnât mean to-â
Her sentence is interrupted by the sound of metal clanging as it hit the floor, a helmet it looked like, and a pair of strong arms wrapped around her shoulders pulling her in for a tight, almost protective hug. It takes Korraâs breath away and for a split second sheâs frozen, a mixture of fear, surprise and confusion. âI thought they were going to take you, I thought we were going to lose you, I vowed to keep you safe and for a moment I thought I had failed. I had failed the Avatar, of all people..â The guard captainâs voice cracks on the last word and she squeezes the Avatar just a little tighter. âKuvira..â Korra managed to mutter the womanâs name, one sheâd learned just days ago, as her arms came up to wrap around her middle, her body trembling as her face drops into the crook of the metalbenderâs neck, the tears sheâd been holding in began to spill effortlessly. The sobs from the Avatar, someone sheâd looked to as a hero, cause her to freeze up, but only for a moment before she pulls away just enough to look at Korraâs face, her hands holding Korra by her arms gently, but firm enough to support her and keep her upright. âThey wouldnât have gotten far, I would have chased them all the way across the world if I had to.â Thereâs a hurried mixture of arrogance and reassurance in her voice and it makes Korra chuckle softly as she reaches up to wipe the tears from her face with the back of her hand. âI should have been ready, I should have known. Iâm the Avatar, I should have been able to fight back, I shouldnât be this weak.â The disdain and frustration in her voice is clear, and her hands ball into fists at her side, âI feel like the failure, and like such a waste. You shouldnât have to save me, no one should have to-â Sheâs cut off again when Kuvira laughs and brings her face just a little closer to her own, sheâs thrown off by the scent of metal mixed with a hint of jasmine and honey. As she inches closer she speaks, âItâs funny, but itâs also kind of sad. You donât even realize just how important you are to people. And not just as the Avatar.. you are important as Korra too.â And then suddenly their lips are touching and the Avatarâs mind is reeling. Itâs only for a quick second, but that second seemed to last forever in her mind. âI am happy youâre safe.. Korra.â She hardly has enough breath to reply, but the only thing sheâs thinking at this moment in time is just how nicely the otherâs lips curl around her name. Finally she opens her mouth to speak, but once again she is interrupted. âLin, Asami! I found her! Sheâs over here!â Thereâs a panicked scurrying as both Kuvira and the Avatar simultaneously jump to their feet and move just a foot or two apart from one another. The guard captain has already slipped her helmet back on by the time the group rounds the corner to see them. She smiles a little as Suyin comes into view first, followed by both Lin and Asami, all with relieved looks on their faces. âOh good, Kuvira, you found her.â The matriarch puts a hand on her waist as she reaches out to put the other on Korraâs back. âWe were all so worried we couldnât sleep, then we went to find you and you were gone..â âWe didnât know what to think! We almost sent out an entire search party.â The police chief adds, her voice harsh but thereâs an obvious hint of worry there. âSorry, I didnât mean to worry you guys. I was just getting some air when Kuvira decided to keep me company.â The waterbender offers each of them an apologetic smile, giving Asami a little hug when the engineer approaches and stands at her side. âWell at least we know you were safe with Kuvira here.â The nonbender says with a sigh of relief, looping arms with the Avatar almost immediately, âYou should come back to my room. Mako and Bolin are there too, they couldnât sleep either.. I think we would all rest easier if we were all together.â âWeâve all had a long night, some rest would do wonders.â Suyin smiled as she gave the Avatar a little nudge before putting a hand on Kuviraâs shoulder as well, âFor all of us. We should all try and sleep at least a little, we can talk plans in the morning.â The guard captain nods quickly, a hand coming up to rub the back of her neck a bit sheepishly. âUnderstood.â She replied before her gaze moves to meet the Avatarâs once more, âPlease do get some rest, Avatar..â Their eyes linger for only a second before Suyin begins to usher the younger metalbender off, while Lin gives Korra and Asami a stern look before following after her sister. âCome on, Asami, Iâm sure the boys are worried..â Korra says with a soft chuckle as they begin heading back to the rooms. But not before the Avatar takes a quick glance back to watch Kuvira disappear around the corner.Â
