“Cheers to being dead, then.” Stephen held his glass up and then downed what it contained. “Everyone has been asking me what it’s like to be back— now I finally get the chance to ask someone else.”

“Yeah I don’t really like answering those kinds of questions either. Though I get ‘what does space prince even mean’ and I don’t know how to tell them that isn’t even a real title.”
“Maybe have some fun with it— ‘space prince’ sounds pretty cool.” Stephen was happy to talk about this than his own stressors. “If people are going to ask ridiculous questions, why not give them some ridiculous answers?”

“I thought you and I were friends.” Illyana’s lips tug downwards. “You’re not being very friendly, Stephen.”
He let out a lighthearted scoff, almost a laugh. “Have I ever been known for my friendliness?” Stephen knew that he wasn’t. “You know better than most that there has been.. a lot going on as of late. Things change. Sometimes people don’t need to know why.”

“That’s a bit harsh. Don’t you think, dear?” The question is thrown over her shoulder as Clea continues to search for the tome she’s looking for. She could use magic to summon it, but it feels good to use her hands. “People are — understandably — going to have a lot of questions.”
Stephen ran a hand quickly down his face. It was part of the job, she was right. But even though he had been at it for a while now, he still stayed stubborn in a lot of ways. People didn’t need to know everything. “They should just trust that we are doing what’s best. They don’t need to know what’s going on in our lives.”

“I think they’re slightly my concern, considering the fact that we share a Sanctum.” Regardless, the logistics of who was Sorcerer Supreme and why wouldn’t matter much soon anyways. Once Clea and Strange could finally see things the way Stephen did, they’d understand. But he still had to put on appearances.
“Fair enough.” Stephen shrugged. His counterpart had a point— but that didn’t mean he was eager to share much of anything with the other man at the moment. “How much has Clea told you? I’d hate to rehash things you already know.”
“Yes, I am Sorcerer Supreme again. The why’s and how’s aren’t really any of your concern.”
“…And I’ll be needing that.”
“Don’t let me stop you. You’ve earned it as far as I’m concerned.”
“See, we’re not all bad, are we?”
“What you did was generous. What I’m not loving is this— having it flaunted in our faces. Is that really necessary, Emma?”
“I don’t think anything is as simple as you’re making it seem. It’s not cut and dry.”
“I’m not trying to say it’s simple, but it seems obvious there is something going on that we aren’t seeing. There’s more to this than what’s been said.”
“Something is wrong.” Her father is dead, the Avengers and mutants both targeted. “Not having answers is difficult.”
“I have a feeling we need to tread carefully going forward.” Strange paused, his expression softening slightly. “I’m sorry about your father, Wanda. Do you have any idea about what we might be dealing with?”

The city was bustling with activity as people walked through the streams of crowds. Most were going about their busy lives, focused on the next task ahead. Gomi blended in with the crowds pretty well as he leaned against a street lamp with his backpack on his back. Most people wouldn't notice the little green crustacean poking through the zipper; they also wouldn't notice the boy's hand slip into a passing purse to swipe a wallet.
Gomi looked at the wallet in hand before putting it in his coat pocket and walking down the opposite direction of the oblivious theft victim. He kept his guard up, but he tried to play it cool. Surely no one saw that, right?
Strange saw it. With a flick of his wrist, he transported the wallet from inside the boy’s coat pocket and into his hand with a gold flourish. He then loudly cleared his throat. “This isn’t yours, is it?”

“And that’s sorted, then? ‘Cause that sounds a whole lot like being enslaved to me.” There was concern etched on Clint’s brows as he stared at his friend, but he didn’t want to push anymore than he needed to. Being Death’s servant sounded like a lot of baggage that Clint wasn’t equipped to deal with. He couldn’t help the self deprecating chuckle at those next words as he nodded slightly and tried to offer up a smile. Emphasis on tried. “You could say that, yeah. It’s been... different than the Thunderbolts I’m used to.”
Stephen let out a dry laugh. “That’s exactly what it was, I won’t mince words about it. I wasn’t myself for so long that having my soul back feels.. odd.” He placed a hand over his chest as he took in a deep breath. “If I’m being honest, I didn’t know if I would ever make it back. Making Clea Sorcerer Supreme was the last desperate act to try and make things right.” And now she was giving him the title back. Things were changing faster than he liked.
Clint didn’t seem to be any more enthused about their topic of conversation. Stephen took a moment and raised a brow at the archer. “Different can be good. Judging by your face though.. I wouldn’t say it’s been that for you. Hm?”

“I’m not sure if it’s distant, but it’s definitely different.” It’s hard to explain. Jane can’t find the word but it’s on the tip of her tongue and it’s driving her insane. “I don’t know,” she admits. “I don’t know why I got to be special. I know there’s a lot of people who try to claim they’re not done yet and need to go back.”
“Different. Definitely different.” Stephen agreed. “Well, Asgardians don’t always follow the same rules. I guess it’s not worth questioning— sometimes digging deeper into things can cause more problems.”

“If there is something, Stephen, we will find it.” Wanda reassures him. “What you have been through is traumatic, in addition to the ongoing trauma of our current state of affairs. I believe you’ve handled your transition far better than many others could.”
“That’s very kind of you.” Stephen couldn’t help but scoff softly and shake his head. “I’ve just gotten back and now Clea is begging me to take the mantle again. It feels wrong.” Even under the circumstances, he was hesitant. Though what he wasn’t willing to admit was that he had missed it, and was grappling with the guilt of that as well.

“I don’t fear Death.” Emma all but waves him off. “Not even before the resurrections.” Perhaps that’s foolish of her. It likely is. Emma just exists within a certain bubble of confidence and privilege that’s protected her since birth. Even after Scott attempted to choke the Phoenix from her body, her conflicting emotions didn’t exactly line with fear. “I hope this doesn’t make enemies of us, Stephen. That’d be quite a shame.”
“I’m not looking to make enemies, Emma. I never am. Especially not with you. But that’s personal— and I have more to worry about than just that. You and I seem to have found ourselves on opposite sides at the moment.”

“I can do my best to research. This other Wanda is more.. seasoned than I am.” Wanda herself has studied the Darkhold extensively, but not for as long as the other Scarlet Witch has been training and practicing. People forget at times how inexperienced Wanda truly is. She’s made herself enough of a threat that they don’t focus on the fine facts while they run from the blast radius. “For a number of reasons, yes. It’s similar to Westiew, but different in the places where it would count.”
“Seasoned or not, you can provide a unique perspective on things precisely because of your experiences. Westview in particular.” He spoke matter-of-fact, knowing the subject was a sore one for her. But he hadn’t been around for her time in Westview. That was the other Stephen. He was happy to keep his distance from it if it meant possibly getting some answers. “Different in the places where it would count.. you mind explaining that?”
