Bookish friends, I need your help!

My massage therapist and I were chatting about books we like and she mentioned there's a series she loved when she was her daughter's age (around 11 or 12 I believe). She thinks her daughter would really enjoy them too but can't remember what they're called. Here's what she does remember:

The main character starts off as a preteen girl and grows through her teens over the course of the series. She gets swapped with her (twin?) brother and he ends up going to magic school in her place, while she goes to school to become a knight. At school she has a cat who rides around on her shoulder. She's classmates with the nation's prince, and she falls in love with him, but he doesn't know she's a girl so she can't tell him how she feels. Also she has violet eyes.

Any guesses?
