The Final Leap, Stefan Christmann
Every winter emperor penguins breed on the ice shelf, returning to the sea by sliding down ramps of snow and ice. Come spring, the ramps melt and the penguins must leap rather than slide into the ocean. Their life cycle is intertwined with the cycles of freezing and thawing ice, leaving them extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
Fluff Formation, Stefan Christmann
‘A few chicks started sticking their heads together,’ says Stefan, ‘and within minutes there was a fluff ball of about 50.’ One stuck its head up and broke the symmetry. Unlike the vast huddles of adult emperor penguins, mini huddles of youngsters are disorderly – taking it in turns to occupy the warm centre does not always come naturally.
By the time their chick is two months old, both parents must go hunting to bring back food. When they leave, the chicks arrange themselves into groups known as crèches. Snuggling together is important practice for later in life when they will form adult huddles and rotate in and out of the warm centre.

WATCH: An Interactive Mirror Built from 450 Rotating Penguins by Daniel Rozin (video)
“Build a mirror out of waterfowl” is not an art project. It’s something an evil wizard from a Russian fairy tale does three scenes before the nine-year-old-girl protagonist cuts his heart out with a hairbrush.
