Disorientation and Disaster ~ [Calder and Beatrice]
Beatrice noticed the man she was staring at return the stare, even frowning which made her feel suddenly uncomfortable. That feeling got worse as the man was beginning to walk over to her. She wrapped her arms around her own chest, trying to shrink, almost as if she could pull tight enough and shrink out of here.
The man bowed when he reached her, bringing to mind all sorts of formalities and ways she was supposed to act that Beatrice just didn’t know. ”I’m fine.” Beatrice answered his question, before realising she’d answered wrong. “Actually I’m not, I’m definitely not. I don’t think anyone is, I don’t think anyone should be either. I mean I’d be pretty scared of someone who was feeling fine right now, you know?” Beatrice let out a laugh, trying to find her answer funny, even though it really wasn’t.
“But don’t worry about the whole…gaze thing…I mean I guess I was staring at you as well and I mean it makes sense, you know, even with everyone here I’m still a blue scale-y freak.” Beatrice laughed again and realised it was probably noticeable how forced it was. “I’m sorry, I’m trying to laugh to avoid the whole ‘horror inevitably setting in’ thing.” Beatrice rubbed her eyes in case tears had started, they hadn’t yet. “It’s not really working I guess. I just realised I never said my name or anything.” Beatrice winced as she spoke. “It’s Beatrice, I’m Beatrice, Beatrice Summer. It’s nice to meet you.”
As soon as he drew near, the girl pull her arms close to her chest, almost as if she was afraid. It wasn't surprising given the situation, but it was still unnerving. Did he look intimidating to her? Trying to relax his body and appear more open, he let his arms rest by his sides. There was the chance the change in body language wouldn't do much, but it was worth a try.
Being brought back into the conversation, Calder grimaced. "Ah... that was somewhat of a stupid question. I do apologise... You're entirely correct though... how anyone could feel fine now... that in itself is a terrifying notion. But not something we should speak of just yet hmm? The situation is not truly fruitless. Death is not something people should resort to so swiftly, especially with their own lives on the line..." He lowered his voice muttering to himself. "At least I hope that is the case..."
Although he had drifted off for a moment, her small self depreciating comment caught his attention. A... blue scale-y freak...? Before he could stop himself, Calder began to refute her words. "Nonsense...!" He shook his head. "I would not agree with that in the slightest...! Whilst your appearance may be out of the norm, it's nothing to criticise... I did not mean for my gaze to offend you..." Trailing off, he cleared his throat, bowing his head as she continued to speak. "It's fine, I understand this perfectly. I myself am struggling to avoid the said horror... but perhaps a conversation will help to keep our minds off of it...?"
As she said her name, Calder slipped down to one knee and bowed without a second's thought. "I am pleased to meet you Beatrice Summer." Smiling warmly, he rose to his feet once more before introducing himself. "My name is Calder, and unfortunately I... do not have a last name. I apologise if I frightened you earlier, that was not my intention. Although I cannot blame you if you don't trust me on that... But regardless, it is certainly nice to meet you."
