“There's a monster! Help!”
Sylus went rigid as he heard Rafayel's desperate voice echoing from the hallway and without hesitation, he left the documents he’d been working on scattered across the desk and exited the studio with long, purposeful strides.
A controlled, fast pace of his feet that tried -poorly- to mask the panic that had sent his heart in a frenzy.
It was impossible that a threat had slipped through the Onychinus' security system -bypassed his own sixth sense- but... No matter how irrational and impossible it was, the thought of Rafayel being in distress stirred an instinctive protective response from Sylus.
His jaw tightened when he heard the faint caws of Mephisto coming from the same room and he just threw the door open as soon as he reached it.
The tension left his body at the sight of two big, round eyes shining like emeralds in the dark corner of the room. Hidden behind a stash of canvas, a little tabby kitten shook from fear.
“Rafayel...” He sighed heavily while he pinched the bridge of his nose between two fingers.
Rafayel pleaded with him, standing on the leather couch with a pillow clutched between his hands. His stress had put Mephisto on high alert as well, and now the mechanical crow flew in circles over the spot the kitten was hidden with predatory intentions.
A sharp snap of fingers called Mephisto in order and listening to its owner and creator, the mechanical crow cawed quietly -as if disappointed to let go of its prey- and flew out of the room.
Rafayel corrected him immediately, not wanting to hear any excuses about the intruder. The little beast had ruined his fresh painting and even scratched new canvas. It was unacceptable.
Rolling his eyes, Sylus walked slowly towards the corner and stopped at a far distance from the scared kitten. He crouched down, ignoring Rafayel's futile warnings about the “potential” danger, and stretched out a hand towards the little tabby.
He didn't flinch at the hiss, not even when a tiny paw batted his hand away. He remained still and patient, trying to make the kitten understand he meant no harm.
But with Rafayel complaining loudly and cursing against it from the couch, his calm ran thin and the kitten was just as uncooperative.
“Alright. Let's end this here...”
He grumbled in annoyance and in a quick move, his Evol curled around the tiny ball of fur and dragged it out of its hidden spot.
The kitten meowed in distress, terrified about what was going to happen, until Sylus got a hold of it and cradled it against his chest. He huffed when the sharp claws pierced through his clothes as a first act of resistance but then his warmth and his steady heartbeat soothed the little kitten and made it relax.
...wait a minute, is it purring?”
Rafayel let the pillow fall as he jumped off the couch and with the “monster” caged in Sylus' arms, he had the courage to get closer.
“Yes, it was just scared by a siren's scream...” he answered, his voice hushed to keep the kitten calm while he cuddled it with unexpected gentleness.
Rafayel pouted at his jab and crossed his arms, offended that Sylus was taking the side of the intruder.
But the sight of a big, tall man petting such a small creature was so... adorable that he couldn't resist stealing some glances.
Rafayel denied the offer before Sylus could even finish the sentence. He wouldn't ever fall for the charm of the small beast, he knew that kind of game! Soft fur, gentle purring and big eyes were all meant to make you cave in and be their slave for the rest of your life.
But it seemed like Sylus fell for it.
“I'm sure your artistic genius can fix everything... and I'll buy you more canvas to make up for the scratched ones,” Sylus lifted his gaze from the kitten and met Rafayel's indigo eyes. “Now this little one needs some milk-”
“Oh, no... it's manipulating you. You can't fall for it, Sy! Sent it away before it convinces you to keep it-”
It took exactly a week for the kitten to settle comfortably into Onychinus base.
Despite the ugly meeting, it became fond of Rafayel quite fast. The tabby liked to lounge around white canvas and smell the glass filled with colourful water.
But what it loved the most was cuddling in the big bed, curled above Sylus' bare chest with its tail flicking teasingly at Rafayel's face.
They both learned to share Sylus' warmth, and he didn't mind it a bit.
