"Odd. I wonder who would think Bone Face is a suitable option," Akiyama wondered, more to himself than anyone else. He paused to think a moment before shrugging. "Maybe the goth kids are into that."
"Well...it's tricky." He scratched the back of his head, trying to think of a way to explain it. Snapping his fingers, he pointed at his new companion before reaching into his jacket, pulling out a piece of taffy.
"This is my body," he said, unwrapping the candy and holding it in his palm. "It's whole, it's soft, and it's completely capable of being returned to. But let's say--hypothetically of course--I were to lose a head." His fingers pinched the taffy and twisted hard, yanking off a decent chunk of it. "Well, it's no longer the whole piece. I can't exactly wake up with no head. So, time itself takes over."
He clasped his hands together, kneading the two pieces of taffy between them. "I get to hang out here a little longer while time does her thing, molding it all back together and--" He proudly held out his hand, where a misshapen taffy piece was now together again. He scowled at his handiwork. "I mean, I tend to look better than this, but I think you get the point."
"They are, yes." Coulson confirmed with a confident nod.
Coulson watched the demonstration, appreciating the use of visual aids, as he took notes both in his head and on his clipboard. Akiyama was the first immortal he'd encountered. Sure, he'd brought people back by means of magic but they had, for the most part, been in one piece. This was an entirely new lesson he was getting to experience.
"What if your head is taken elsewhere? Are you here until they are somehow reunited? What's the longest you've been out of body?"
"Depends," Akiyama said with a shrug. He popped the taffy into his mouth, slowly chewing as he crossed his arms and leaned against the wall.
"If it's intact, it comes back faster, even if my head is across the country. I like to think of it like magnets. Eventually, they're just drawn back to one another. If it's damaged or just gone, then I have to grow a new one. Don't really know what happens to the original though..." There was a pause as he thought of how many random body parts could have been just floating around out there, but quickly moved on from that morbid thought. "Growing it takes a lot of time. I think the longest I was out was...four years? Don't recommend that one. People are not happy about you reappearing after a few years."
Akiyama lit up at a fellow Muppet mention and looked down at the man's watch, trying not to look disappointed at the lack of a Kermit timepiece.
"I'm gonna say something controversial: he's an underrated Muppet. I mean, I know he's on all the merchandise and stuff, but how many people actually say Kermit is their favorite Muppet? It's like saying vanilla is your favorite ice cream."
"Vanilla is my favorite ice cream." Sterling said, tilting his head. A small smile stretched across his lips, knowing just how incredibly boring he sounded. Vanilla was often used to describe people with a lack of imagination, after all. "Kermit is the glue that holds that whole group together. There's literally no Muppets without Kermit."
This was certainly not the conversation he had predicted he was going to have when he asked this man for the time.
Throughout his lifetime, Akiyama had met a number of interesting people, but none of them fascinated him as much as the man sitting next to him. He was so...average. Like he had just walked out of the stock photo picture frames used of boring families. He was half tempted to ask if his favorite color was blue or if he enjoyed having oatmeal for breakfast, yet both seemed far too bland of a question to ask.
"Fascinating. A man who truly enjoys the simple things in life," Akiyama said, politely nodding in his direction. "We could all learn a lesson from you. Although, I do think it's a bit of a two-way street with the Muppets. Sure, there wouldn't be any Muppets without Kermit, but it's also hard to see Kermit without the Muppets. They need each other."
What cursed compliment are you?
"You seem like you'd disappear for 6 months and come back hotter."
You're elusive. Unreachable. Emotionally inconvenient and a little mythical.
what are you seeking?
ACCEPTANCE
"i look in the mirror and don't recognize the face staring back." // oh, little songbird, when did you stop singing? why do you let yourself fade into the background, so sure you're not worth seeing? who convinced you that you are nothing but empty air? for as long as you can remember, you've screamed at the sky to be noticed, to be seen, but that never quite worked, did it? so you accepted your role. you learned to bite your tongue, to watch, to fade away. it's easier that way, isn't it? better quiet than ignored. at least this way, you have some control over the situation. but it stings, doesn't it? the more you quiet yourself, the more you force yourself to fade away, the harder it is to reach you. you're losing yourself...and that terrifies you, doesn't it? what you seek is acceptance, to be seen and loved and listened to. and, little ghost, you deserve it. you are worth knowing. i see you. now let others do the same. step into the sunlight and sing, little one. i believe in you.
what do you need to feel okay?
sit by the sea and forget you're alive
you're stuck in your head and can't figure out how to get out. you need to sit by the sea and clear your head. let the waves and the sand and the smell of salt in the air remind you that you are more than your thoughts, you're a whole person. ground yourself in the physical world and remember that you're a part of it. you're not floating in the never-ending space of your thoughts, you're right here. if there's no water near you, just going outside and paying attention to the nature around you will help. find something to focus on. you're right here.
"Oh, right." Akiyama looked down at his Fozzie Bear watch, counting on his fingers as he read the time. "It's somewhere between 18:34 and 18:52. Give or take a minute."
Wow.
He would have gotten a more accurate number if he'd asked a toddler.
Sterling pretended to wind his watch but, in truth, he planned to ask someone else when he wasn't sitting next to this man. He supposed beggars couldn't be choosey but just say no if you don't know the time.
"Thanks." He said, though he didn't sound like he was sure he meant it. "I'm more of a Kermit guy myself." Sterling pointed idly at Ash's watch, making conversation.
"I think my immune system died."

It had not been Akiyama's night. All he wanted was to enjoy a nice meal out on the town for a change, but he never got the opportunity. A skittish robber had fired his gun, ricocheting against the wall and instead hitting a passing Akiyama as he walked by. He supposed he should be mildly thankful it had pierced his head and made it quick, but he still couldn't help but scowl down at his dead body as he waited to come back. He had stepped down the alley to get to the restaurant quicker and now he was slumped down in a bloody mess next to a dumpster. Somehow, it felt fitting.
It only took a few minutes for him to return. He wheezed his first breath again, rolling onto his back as he groaned, both at the blood now soaking into the back of his shirt and the splitting headache he now had. A few seconds passed before he realized there was a pair of feet standing next to him.
"Do you have a chocolate bar?" he asked, pinching the bridge of his nose as he squeezed his eyes shut. "I'm starving."
"There's just one problem with your plan."
"I didn't understand any of it."
"Wait, you can choose to look like that? And Bone Face willingly decided to do so?" He was starting to wonder what was wrong with the other Death to make them choose to be creepy. "Please, don't. I can handle only so many bones."
He lit up at the offer. "Deal."
Turning back towards his body, he held a hand out towards it, like a museum curator discussing his art. "It truly depends on the situation. If the body is intact, I wake up in its location. If it's not, well..." He shrugged. "It gets tricky."
Coulson was a moment away from donning his best skull face when Ash stopped him. He didn't know why he was disappointed by this. He supposed it would have been fun to show off his ability for someone who could take the time to truly appreciate it. Coulson was a fanboy, after all, and he finally had powers.
"I'm unsure what the previous Death's capabilities were but, for myself, I can change my appearance to suit who I'm with, yes."
Coulson took a couple more notes on his clipboard before looking back up.
"Define tricky, please."
