Add Alice, Kim, Theresa and Vivian (top photo) to the Yearbook Hall of Fame. Cause you wouldn’t ask everyone with the last name Smith if they were related, would you? Fun Fact: There’s actually a simple, historical reason Nguyen is such a common Vietnamese name.

Fuck anything else you’ve seen on your dash today. This is the face of the refugees being criminalized.
“The Turkish military bombed Kurdish militants in Iraq’s Sinjar region and in northeastern Syria on Tuesday, widening a campaign against groups affiliated with the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK).
The air strikes in Syria targeted the YPG - a key component of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), which are backed by the United States and have been closing in on the Islamic State bastion of Raqqa.
The Turkish military said the aim of the strikes was to prevent the PKK from sending weapons and explosives for attacks inside Turkey.”

The one with the machete is from a movie
Syria is often seen as a country which has religious freedom. The largest religious community is Sunni Muslims, who constitute roughly 75% of the population. Alawites are approximately 12%, and various Christian denominations are 10%. Other religious communities in the country include Druze (4%); Êzîdîs (1%), who the government categorizes as Muslims; and a very small Jewish community found in Damascus, Qamishlo, and Aleppo.
The government permits the teaching of Armenian, Hebrew, and Aramaic in some schools on the basis that these are “liturgical languages.” Kurdish is generally forbidden in Syria.Â
Jewish people are the only religious minority group whose passports and identity cards note their religion, and they must obtain the permission of the security services before traveling abroad. They also face extra scrutiny from the government when applying for licenses, deeds, or other government papers.
Êzîdîs and their religion are not recognized in Syria. They are categorized as Muslims although Ezidism is a religion which has nothing to do with Islam. Furthermore Êzîdîs are categorized as maktumin (unregistered, hidden) and they are not allowed to get a Syrian citizenship. People who are categorized as maktumin also include Kurds who are also not allowed to get a Syrian citizenship. The number of those stateless Êzîdîs and Kurds is 300,000 today.
I think people often forget about those minorities in Syria. Let’s not forget about them.
