I actually don't think that Ray is completely cynical and hopeless in the movie. Because yeah, he can't see the beauty in the world like pete can, and he believes the last good man was his dad. But he also helped curly when he was hurt, knowing having more alive walkers decreased his chance of winning. He told barkovitch to get up when he sat down to tie his shoes. He comforted barkovitch and stebbins in their last moments. Ray is traumatised from seeing the walkers die. And when he sees his mom ray breaks down and begs for her to hug him. Ray still has hope, hes still emotional and cares and that's what pete wants to protect. That's why he doesnt think ray can kill the major. And in the end he's right.
