In college, I learned that a lot of my classmates were forced by abusive family members to install stalkerware on their devices. It was never as simple as "just remove it", because they depended on their family for financial support. Asserting their independence would mean dropping out of school and immediately becoming homeless.

There was also a huge amount of manipulation and religious indoctrination involved. So many of these people believed it was morally wrong to even think about disobeying their parents, and actually being independent was inconceivable. I also heard a lot of "oh I'm not an adult yet, I'm a student" from people well into their 20s.
