Regulus won’t admit he’s disappointed. He’s been begging for weeks for the Head Boy—how he managed to achieve that, he still doesn’t know—to leave him alone, to let him complete his rounds in silence. No matter how much he threatened to hex him, James just wouldn’t shut up, talking endlessly about how much he loves his friends and family, a rather irritating (and totally not endearing) trait of his, and about Quidditch and pranks and his hatred of potions. He got used to the constant chatter, but now the hallways are quiet. Too quiet. Unsettling so. The only sound being the echoes of his footsteps.

Regulus is not disappointed the Gryffindor didn’t show. Not at all. He couldn’t care less about him. In fact, he’s glad for a calm, peaceful night. Besides, he should have known James would get bored of him soon enough. Who wouldn’t?

Turning the corner, he jumps as he walks directly into someone and is instantly filled with infuriation when he recognises the figure in the dim light of his wand. “Potter!” he whisper-yells. “What are you doing?”

“Looking for you,” James replies, his easy smile making his stomach swoop.

Ignoring the unpleasant sensation this man is eliciting from him, Regulus rolls his eyes. “You found me. Now go away and let me complete my rounds in peace.”

“I thought you could use the company.”

“You thought wrong.”

James sighs. “Look, Reg. I can take a hint. If you truly don’t like me and don’t want me around, I’ll leave you alone. But please know that I really, really like you, and would love to take you to Hogsmeade sometime. On a date, not as friends or my best friend’s little brother.”

“You like me?” he asks, unsure of whether he can trust that statement. What would the personification of the sun ever like about the coldness and darkness that is Regulus?

“I do. I promise, I really do like you.”

Looking at the sincerity in his hazel eyes, Regulus feels something he hasn’t in a long time—hope. Hope for happiness. Hope for love. Hope for a good future, one with this man by his side.

“I’m not going to go to Hogsmeade with you, James,” he declares, quickly adding as the he visibly deflates, “I have a better idea. Meet me on the seventh floor by the tapestry of Barnabas the Barmy at 11 pm on Saturday.”

The shout of pure joy and excitement and utter disbelief he hears behind him as he continues his prefect duties makes him smile involuntarily. Regulus is too far gone, isn’t he? He just knows his heart is going to get broken one way or another, yet he can’t bring himself to care. It’ll be worth it for the chance to get even one moment with James.

Barty takes a deep breath, preparing to do something he has never done before—talk about his feelings—and saunters into the Slytherin dorm that he knows is empty save for the one person he wishes to speak to.

“I don’t want you to see anyone else,” he declares, not bothering with useless small talk and cutting straight to the chase.

Evan looks up from his homework, the sight of the round metal frames that he only wears in the sanctity of his dorm making his stomach swoop. “Excuse me?”

“I…don’t want you to see anyone else,” he repeats, less sure of himself this time. “Romantically. Sexually too.”

“And why is that?”

Barty holds his head up high, masking the tremble in his voice and bile rising in his throat at the idea of being so vulnerable. “’Cause you’re mine, Rosie.”

“Rosie,” Evan says, seemingly turning over that nickname in his mind. “You know I’m not a rose, right? I’m not like those girls you’ve been with before. I’m not pretty and dainty and delicate. I’m all thorns and sharp edges. I will cut. I will draw blood.”

“Cut me, make me bleed, I don’t care,” he replies, voice breathy as he steps closer to his bed. “I just want you. I want you all to myself. I don’t want anyone else to have you the way I do.”

Evan stands, and the two of them walk towards each other until their bodies are mere inches apart. “That is awfully selfish of you.”

“Are you saying you’re not selfish about me?”

Smirking, Evan crashes their lips together, fingers tangling in and pulling his hair. Barty moans, grabbing his waist and pulling him impossibly closer.

“You are selfish about me, aren’t you?” Barty murmurs.

“Shut up and kiss me.”

He doesn’t need to be told twice.

Overdose - Regulus Black - @taylorswiftmicrofic - 467 words - CW: Suicidal Ideation, MCD - AO3

Regulus doesn’t know when it started, but he found he could only fall asleep at night when thinking about death. His death. He would imagine all the various ways he could go out: jumping off the Astronomy Tower, slitting his wrists and bleeding out, a fatal overdose. It was the only thing that could calm the unpleasant thoughts that run rampant in his mind, the stillness and quietness of the night emphasising every thought like they are being shouted directly into a microphone. A miniscule amount of comfort amongst the chaos and darkness of his life, of being born into this family.

Regulus always believed that, when his time inevitably came, he wouldn’t fight it. He’d welcome Death with open arms, embracing like they’re old friends. He wanted that, though he was too much of a coward to do anything about it. Why couldn’t he do it? Sirius left. James broke up with him. Dorcas and Pandora don’t want anything to do with him. His parents are disappointed they’re stuck with him as an heir when, for so many years, his brother fulfilled their every expectation and was the perfect son. Sure, there’s Barty and Evan, but they have each other. They’ll get over it soon enough. So really, what was keeping him here?

Looking across the lake, the cave dimly lit by his wand, he swallows any fear of the unknown waiting for him and steps onto the small boat, Kreacher anxiously wringing his hands as he follows him on board. The elf has no reason to worry; Regulus will protect him with his life.

“If anything happens,” he whispers, “I want you to take the Horcrux and get out of here. I need you to destroy it.”

“But-”

“No buts. That’s an order.”

His heart sinks as he watches Kreacher fight the urge to argue, but Regulus is his master after all. He cannot disobey a direct order.

For as long as he can remember, he has longed for the sweet release of death. But as cold hands drag him under water, nails piercing his skin and drawing out a scream that would not be heard even if he wasn’t alone. Regulus fights the creatures. He fights to get them off. He fights to break the surface and breathe again. He fights to live. After all he has been through, all his dreams and desire of the end, it’s when his eyes start to involuntarily close that he has the biggest revelation of his life. He doesn’t want to die; he just doesn’t want to live like this. Regulus could have run away with Sirius; he should have run away with him. But it’s too late now. He realised too late. This is how his story ends, miserable and alone and so full of regret.

Growing up, there was always a divide between them. Even before she found out she was a witch, Lily always felt different from her sister. She never felt as though she belonged whenever they were together. Petunia was proper and prim and the perfect daughter, while she was loud and chaotic and messy, often opting to play outside in the mud rather than with dolls. Petunia was everything she wished she was, and the funny thing is, she knows that feeling is mutual. She knows that beneath all the insults, she wants to be a witch like her.

Yet despite their strained relationship, Lily still tries. Tries to connect with her sister when she’s home for the holidays. Tries to smile through the cold shoulders and glares across the dinner table. Tries to brush of the snarky comments made underneath her breath. Tries to make small talk to no avail.

Hands trembling, Lily clutches the paper in her hands, crumpling it with how tight she is holding onto it.

“What’s wrong, love?”

She quickly swipes her cheeks, looking up at her wonderful girlfriend. “Mum wrote. Tuney’s getting married. She didn’t-” Lily takes a deep breath, blinking the fresh tears out of her eyes. “She didn’t even tell me herself. And she doesn’t even want- She doesn’t want me there.”

Mary sits on the sofa next to her, wrapping her arms around her shoulders and places a gentle kiss to the side of her head. “She doesn’t deserve you if this is how she treats you.”

“But I just thought…she’s my sister, and I know our relationship is tumultuous at best, but I still love her. I want to be there for her on her big day. But I don’t think she loves me anymore. She hasn’t for a long time.”

“It’s awful how she treats you, but I’m sure she does love you deep down, she just doesn’t know how to show it. It’s impossible not to love you.”

Lily smiles weakly, burying her head into the crook of Mary’s neck and breathes in the comforting scent of her floral perfume. She wonders where it all went wrong, when they were damaged beyond repair, when then they became strangers rather than sisters. Was it before or after she went to Hogwarts? Was that what ultimately tore them apart? And, if given the chance to redo her life, would she change anything? Would she decide to stay in the muggle world and potentially salvage their relationship? Lily isn’t so sure. She loves her life, but she also loves her sister. She just wishes things were different in this life, in this reality.

Standing by the back door of the Potters manor, Dorcas takes a deep breath and heads to the swings in the garden. “We're still friends, right?” she says directly. “Nothing has to change.”

Marlene chuckles. “Imagine the version of you this time last year actually wanting to be my friend.”

“She'd probably think I've gone crazy or you've bewitched me.”

“What? You're not bewitched by my Adam Sandler fits, terribly cut hair and impossible clumsiness?”

“Your loserness has absolutely captured my heart,” Dorcas replies, her tone teasing and sarcastic to mask the truth behind that statement.

They're silent for a moment, the only sound coming from the light rustle of trees and the occasional hoot of an owl. “I- I don't-” Marlene squeezes her eyes shut as she admits, “I don't think we can go back to being friends. Just friends, at least.”

There's no way Dorcas is interpreting that correctly. No bloody way. “What do you mean just friends?”

Marlene's brown eyes are glassy as she turns to look at her. “The reason Sirius dared me to kiss you…He knows I would never back down from a dare, and he thought that if we actually did kiss, you'd like fall in love with me or something.”

She laughs dejectedly, and between the hope flowing through her veins, Dorcas’ heart sinks at how small and sad this woman who is so full of life is at the idea of her feelings not being reciprocated.

Cupping Marlene's cheeks and tilting her head up, their eyes locking, she puts as much emphasis behind her words as she can, trying to convey the sincerity of everything she utters. “That kiss didn't make me fall in love with you.” The blonde looks down at the ground, kicking the mud beneath her chunky boots. “I've been in love with you months now.”

“What?” she asks, eyes wide as she looks back up at her, searching for any hint of a lie in her gaze.

Dorcas leans down, their noses brushing as she murmurs, “I love you, Marls. I meant what I said, your loserness really has captured my heart.”

Marlene closes the small gap between them, tentatively connecting their lips, until Dorcas slides her tongue in her mouth and deepens the kiss, fireworks exploding in her stomach at finally, finally getting to be with the woman of her dreams.

Phantom - Mary Macdonald (Past Marylily) - @taylorswiftmicrofic - 410 words - AO3

Mary feels as though she is losing her damn mind. She cannot escape the ghosts haunting her. The man taking his son, almost an identical clone of him, to school. The blonde woman running past her every day as she goes for her morning coffee. The man sitting in comfortable solitude in the corner of her favourite coffee shop, occasionally sipping a cup of tea until it becomes stone cold after forgetting about it from being too engrossed in whatever book he is reading. The barista who always greets her with a warm smile and kind eyes and has memorised her very complicated order. The sound of a loud laughter that’s more reminiscent of a dog barking.

But what kills her inside the most is the phantom of the woman she believed that she would spend the rest of her life with, showing up in every redhead or women in chunky knitted jumpers and cardigans, visions of her beautiful being infiltrating her every waking and sleeping moment. The woman she thought would be her forever, until Lily decided to fight for their freedom, their right to exist in the magical world without fear of persecution for how they were born, while Mary ran away in cowardice. She chose herself over the ‘greater good’, as their former Headmaster put it when trying to recruit her to his army despite barely being an adult, despite still feeling like a child. Lily never blamed her for her decision though. She never thought she was a coward. They just went their separate ways after graduation, their last interaction friendly and amicable.

She wanted to reach out every single day, but she knew it was too dangerous. She didn’t want to put either of them, or Lily’s new family, in even more peril.

Then on that fateful day, November 1st 1981, she woke up after a Halloween party to a telephone call from Remus. A day she would never, ever forget. A moment that is permanently seared into her memory, collapsing to the floor with a guttural scream as tears stream down her face. A call that killed her the way that monster killed the woman she loved more than anything in the world.

Perhaps, if she fought, things would have been different. Perhaps, if she convinced Lily to leave that world behind with her, they could have had their happily ever after. Perhaps, if she just tried harder, she could have saved her life.
