Fiesta imaginaria #1 (en proceso)
Espacio: Estudio y obra plástica de Marcos Raya, Chicago, Illinois
Fecha: Junio del 2014
Fotógrafo: Manuel Vason
Participan: Marcos Raya (Chicago), Roberto Sifuentes (Chicago), Erica Mott (Chicago), Jenny de la Luz (Chicago), Balitrónica (Tijuana-San Diego), Guillermo Gómez-Peña (DF-San Francisco). In June of 2014, La Pocha Nostra collaborated with our long-term friend performance photographer Manuel Vason in Chicago. We were rehearsing at the studio of maestro Marcos Raya and invited Manuel to spend a few hours photographing the process. Both La Pocha and Manuel have been interested in questioning the borders that exist between performance and photography, and both view the space in between as the ultimate project. Manuel was so impressed with the incredible installation work of Raya that he also decided to think of him as a third auteur. As a result, this mini-portfolio comprised of 6 rare images unravels the question of, “who is the artist?”
This project is a true collaboration. The series was co-created and co-curated by performance artists from the troupe La Pocha Nostra, installation artist Marcos Raya, and photographer Manuel Vason. The work debunks the traditional binary of photographer/model, instead giving equal creative agency to each individual collaborator. At the same time, it presents a wholly integrated, synergetic work with all elements engaging in dialogue. By framing the images as a truly collective, democratic work, we hope to encourage viewers to unpack complicated issues of authorship, ownership, credit and criticism.
