I think it’s absolutely hilarious Kid Rock was the only somewhat major Republican musician alternative they could book for their little Super Bowl halftime show. He hasn’t been in the Billboard Hot 100 since 2015. His only Top 10 single (with Sheryl Crow, who has since denounced him, I’m pretty sure) charted in 2002. I don’t think I’ve heard him on the radio since I was like 14. I’m 25. And he is always at these events because Republicans make really bad music and the pickings are slim.

The whole "Bad Bunny is American" conversation is really frustrating because I do think people mean well by it, but it is far too complex a situation. I grew up Boston, my mother moved here from Puerto Rico while pregnant with me. While I'm so so so proud to be Boricua, this still makes ME an American. I grew up here.

However. My mom would actively get angry if you called her American.

Puerto Ricans largely do not consider themselves to be American. We have our own consitition. Simply saying "Puerto Ricans are AMERICAN." makes it sound like it's a state like any other, when it's not. Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States, a COLONY that was handed over after the Spanish-American war from one colonizer to another. The people of Puerto Rico gained US citizenship in 1917, but are not extended the same rights as people on the mainland.

At the end of the day, I feel like people focusing on whether Bad Bunny is American or not is absolutely moot point because the xenophobia being thrown at him has literally nothing to do with citizenship, and everything to do with our culture making white america angry and uncomfortable because it is different.

This whole thing just proves that it's not about legality or nationality, it is about hating what they don't understand and about hating that latinos are loud, powerful and numerous in the United States.

Bentio saying "We are Americans." at the Grammys was not specific to Puerto Ricans, it was too everyone being targeted by ICE.

Bad Bunny is LATINO above all. BORICUA above all. We are together in this. Forget the American shit.

It would be negligent of me to not add my piece about this being Hispanic myself. I don’t normally listen to Spanish music, especially living in the states for so long, surrounded by white folks (whom I love very much). But I’m buying NFL+ for Bad Bunny and Bad Bunny only.
