Why is Elia agreeing to polygamy so irksome for you?

Because it runs completely counter to her own interests, self respect, and exists solely to make the adulterous, disastrous love affair of Rhaegar and Lyanna more palatable.

Elia Martell marries the crown prince in all acceptable honor and suffers greatly to give him a daughter in the first year of the marriage. Rhaegar rewards her with national humiliation at Harrenhal by publicly declaring his interest making his cousin's underage betrothed his mistress. Much how Aegon the Unworthy tried to do poor Naerys but was stopped by Aemon.

Speaking of parallels to Aegon the Unworthy, why the in the seven hells would a Dornish princess be happy her husband was trying to recreate Daemon Blackfyre? A Dornish queen and her half Dornish son facing off against a favored high born bastard; a centuries old conflict that ended in Elia's own lifetime. Elia might has well be sharpening the blade Rhaegar uses to cut the throats of their children as to approve of him fucking a rival into Lyanna Stark.

Rhaegar could have taken a discrete mistress or carry on a quiet affair nearly any other woman on the planet. Instead he chooses the daughter of one Lord Paramount and betrothed of another. He runs off with Lyanna and kicks off a war. Leaving Elia alone on Dragonstone. Leaving Elia and their children in reach of /Aerys/.

If you insist on making Elia complicit in Rhaegar's crimes, why isn't Elia and their children in Dorne? Why aren't they hidden away in Essos? Why was Aerys able to get his hands on them and hold them hostage?

Elia is Dornish; therefore she is polyamorous. That is a ruinous, racist piece of tripe. Oberyn Martell has an open relationship with a long term paramour so his brother in law can abduct and have an affair with another woman? Rhaegar isn't Dornish; he doesn't get to use his wife's culture against her. Doran Martell never took another lover after Mellario left. Quentyn Martell was a virgin.

Plug Cersei Lannister or Catlyn Stark into Elia Martell's situation and Rhaegar's actions are suddenly beyond the pale? How interesting only white women are worthy of respect and honor.

It is 'irksome' because it degrades and dehumanizes and drags Elia down to a footstool for Lyanna Stark. And that is all people like you care about.

Thousands of people died for this little love affair. Elia and her children died. Thousands of her countrymen died. It is irksome that these are acceptable casualties as long as your self insert gets her hot little hands on that crown.

And polygamy has been illegal since before the reforms of Jaehaerys. It is illegal under the Faith of the Seven. It is illegal under the Old Gods. The last Targaryen king who tried enforced polygamy had dragons and he failed. Rhaegar has none.

Interesting how Rhaegar keeps pulling up parrellels to the worst historical dragon kings.

I’m a big fan of reenactment archaeology. I think there’s a lot to be said for recreating a scenario to better understand decisions made in generations past. Usually there’s an inherent logic to them.

Which is to say, that now that I have a baby of my own, I understand so much better the common cultural practice in which unmarried women wear their hair loose and uncovered, while married women have their hair covered and/or bound back.

Hi! I'm turning to you because you tend to be really good at understanding characters and their motivations, and it's something I'm not always the best at. I'm really trying to understand why Obi-Wan and Yoda had Luke go after Vader (the only reason I can think of, especially in Obi-Wan's case, is revenge), instead of actually... doing something about the Empire. I mean, surely they must have known that killing Vader wouldn't have stopped Palpatine or been much more than a temporary blow for him? If you have any insight in this, it'd be super appreciated if you wanted to share (and if you don't, that is totally okay too, I understand that this might be a really weird thing to put in someone's ask box).

From a meta standpoint, this is entirely a product of A New Hope being originally written as its own film instead of the first part of a series: in the earliest ANH novelizations, Palpatine/Sidious wasn't a character in his own right yet (nor was he initially conceived as a character who wields vast power), so Vader was the main villain Luke was meant to defeat in his revenge story, with Obi-Wan as his mentor having his greatest second chance in life and death. But Star Wars growing into a franchise threw a wrench into that plan: Vader is Anakin and a more sympathetic character than audiences expected him to be, the Jedi are more morally ambiguous than the audience had assumed, and Palpatine/Sidious becomes the true villain that has to be defeated in the end.

In-universe, however, there are several layers to this, with revenge being the most surface-layer one. Beyond that, since Anakin had Fallen, Obi-Wan most likely assumed Luke (and/or Leia) to be the "real" Chosen One and his greatest second chance to fulfill "their" destiny of vanquishing the Sith, and that includes Anakin by that point (IIRC this is how the Rebels cartoon interprets the situation). As for why not go for Sidious first, ROTS shows just how little Obi-Wan actually understands Anakin from his assumption that Anakin is ambitious and power-hungry by nature, and given that Sith apprentices are supposed to overthrow their masters in accordance to religious ideology, he would have assumed "Vader" to be his own threat to be extinguished. (As for Yoda, who embodies detachment and lacks that personal connection to Anakin, it's a matter of religious dogma: vanquishing the Sith is what the Jedi do, so he'll do it.)

I think Obi-Wan and Yoda misunderstand Luke in the same way in that they don't understand love and "attachment": they would not have considered the possibility that Luke might Fall to the Dark Side himself had he belatedly realized that he had committed patricide, especially not after Obi-Wan had used Anakin's "death" as a motivator (re: Luke heavily identifying himself with Anakin throughout the OT, even in ANH). I do believe that had Luke found out the truth after unwittingly committing patricide and before killing Sidious, he very likely would have experienced severe moral injury and been highly susceptible to Sidious' manipulation (like his father before him), whereas if he had found out after killing both Sith (which I doubt would have happened because it's still Anakin's prophecy even after his Fall, not Luke's), he would have Fallen anyway and been just as much of a threat. And to the PT-era Jedi, even if Luke had Fallen, there's always Leia as a back-up plan (though I believe Leia would have Fallen too if she found out she had unwittingly committed fratricide).

There's obviously also the more uncharitable interpretation I've read of the Jedi wanting to kill Anakin for being the (barely-)living proof of their systemic failure, which would tie into the revenge interpretation, but I personally think this motivation is only subconscious at best, if present at all, and in generally not the main thing the Jedi have going for them. That being said, this interpretation could also serve as evidence for just how far the Jedi have fallen during the canon era, from passively accepting and endorsing slavery to, well, this.

TL;DR: The Doylist reason is because ANH was written to be its own thing instead of part of a series, so there's all sorts of early-installment weirdness in there. The Watsonian reason is because they place religious dogma over the individual and believe the ends justify the means, which is one of the PT-era Jedi's fatal flaws in general and one of the very reasons the they stagnated and Anakin Fell in the first place.

no really, squeeze it. Does it feel like it’s got sand in it? is’s sharpening sand. Stab the tip of your needle into it back and forth and it’ll help put a sharp edge back on a pin or needle that’s been blunted by use, or has a little bit of rust on it. It can’t fix anything worse then a little of either, and won’t work on something REALLY blunted, but its a lifesaver.

Such a bag may be purchased for 5 or 10 cents in any store that sells sewing materials. Needles often become rusted from the perspiration of the hands or from being left in damp places. The beginner may use a small emery bag to remove rust; or, a small piece of emery paper may be used instead."

Gentle reminder - modern sewing tools are made from treated or plated metal, or stainless steel. In terms of human civilisation, this is a wild advance of technology. Needles are some of our oldest tools; rust was formerly ubiquitous, and attacked every form of everyday metal. A rusty needle tears fabric, or worse, stains it. The luxury and technology of rustproof needles and pins - forgotten in a few generations of human memory - and yet it is remembered in the strawberry. Memory is stored in the strawberry!

Both are red herrings.

Cersei Lannister, Kevan Lannister, Jon Connington, and Barristan Selmy are not reliable narrators on what were the motivations of Rhaegar Targaryen.

The operation theory that Rhaegar loved his Lady Lyanna comes the disastrous public crowning at Harrenhal and later the pair disappear around the same time.

When faced with visions in the House of the Undying, the first and last time Rhaegar speaks for himself the exchange was this:

Rhaegar: Aegon. What better name for a king?

Elia: Will you make a song for him?

Rhaegar: He has a song. He is the prince that was promised, and his is the song of ice and fire. There must be one more. The dragon has three heads.

And the shippers like to chirp out of context quotes like 'love is the death of duty' and 'the heart in conflict with its self' in order to validate their shallow self centered selfishness rather than exploring any real thematic conflicts.

'Love is the death of duty' comes Maester Aemon counsel Jon Snow about the heavy burden of his oaths to the Night Watch against his natural love of his father and his family.

Master Aemon gave up the throne twice, went to the Wall in order to safeguard any political conspiracies against his brother, and watch from afar as his entire family died or barely escaped into exile.

It is the conflict of duty versus duty, between promised oaths and personal judgment, between mercy and murder, and weight of one life against the greater good and what that means.

A married prince making a mistress out of a betrothed highborn girl isn't a dark night of the soul, it is a salacious scandal at best.

No one is going to war over a missing maidenhead. It would be a Trial of the Seven, or concessions after concessions by the crown to the North and the Stormlands, but Rickard Stark still might demand his wayward daughter back.
