Harvey wasnât an insecure man. He knew the effort it took to get to where he is today and took pride in it. He never felt the need to compare himself to other men that happened to be born with wealth and opportunities, until today.Â
The gala was bustling with people. From reporters to the nouveau and vieux riche, the ballroom was crawling with opportunity. Bruce had planned this gala for him, to celebrate his first year as Gothamâs D.A. Everyone was here to see him, to celebrate his achievements, most of all he wanted to celebrate with you.
Though your relationship was fairly new Harvey couldnât resist the urge to show you off. You looked absolutely dazzling in the color matched dress he insisted you wear to show everyone the two of you were a couple. And as if that wasnât enough he mentioned you to everyone he came in contact with, praising you at every turn.
âWell, [name] has a degree in architecture, sheâs assisting with the new design ofâŠ.â
âMy companion graduated top of her class I couldnât imagine a better fitâ
âYes she looks gorgeous indeed, thank youâ
He couldnât resist talking about you, the only question being. Where are you? The two of you entered the gala together, arms linked together until you excused yourself making way for the restroom. Itâs been 10 minutes since then, Harvey hadnât seen you since.Â
The older man next to him focus drifted away from Harvey as the conversation continued. More people enter the discussion giving Harvey the perfect chance to excuse himself to look for you.Â
It wasnât too difficult for him to follow you, your distinct laugh made his mission easier. There you sat at the bar as joyous as ever. Harveyâs eyes panned to the cause of your laughter, his smile dropped. Bruce Wayne, his best friend since childhood, was the reason for your delayed return back to him, his stomach churned. Did you find him funnier than him? More charming? More expensive?Â
Granted you were free to bond with whomever you pleased but the sight made him feel a sense of displeasure. He knew his friend like the back of his hand, his reputation preceded him
âI canât believe that happened at a meeting especially!â you giggled, taking a sip of your drink, eyes focused on the man next to you.Â
âWhat can I say [Name] trouble seems to just follow me,â he said placing his hand on your shoulder, then to your collarbone to âfixâ your necklace. Bruce was too close, about to go too far.
âI hope Iâm not interrupting you lovebirds,â interrupted Harvey. His irritation masked with a forced smile. You had never seen him upset, and he hoped you never would, but Bruce was cutting it ridiculously close.Â
âHarvey, glad you could join us. I was just telling [Name] about last week's circus of a meetingâ Bruce smugly responded, he knew exactly what he was doing.Â
âIs that so?â responded Harvey, not looking at the man, eyes still focused on you. The situation was painfully awkward, and you were unsure why. You said nothing, just glancing between the two men every now and then until Harvey spoke.Â
âWell, Iâm sorry to cut this short but [Name] has an early meeting tomorrow. We should leave,â he said curtly. Tomorrow was Saturday, you did not work on weekends, nor have meetings.Â
âHarv tomorrow is-,â your words were cut short. Your boyfriend was practically dragging you out your seat beelining towards the massive doors.Â
âNo worries Miss [Name], Iâll call you after your early meeting,â called Bruce after youÂ
The withered string holding Harvey back seemed to snap after Bruceâs final comment. Without turning back he proceeded to walk faster towards the door, you stumbling behind asking him to slow down just a little to match pace. Since when did the two of you exchange numbers? How long have you two been communicating? Why did Bruce set his sights on you now?
The car ride was awfully silent. You assumed Harvey informed the driver to take you back to your place like usual but the route taken became increasingly unfamiliar. You had only been to Harveyâs place a handful of times, not enough to have clothes or really anything left at his home. Before you could ask the car pulled into the long driveway. You spent too much time thinking about the driver's whereabouts and possible conversations. It was too late. Harvey had already circled to your side opening the car door for you.
You mustered up the courage to speak up, âI can tell him to take me home after you leave, Harv. itâs no big dealâÂ
âNo need to inconvenience the driver, dear. Just come inside,â he smiled gently, taking your hand in his.Â
Harveyâs home was spacious. Like most homes, significantly smaller than Bruceâs manor but still charming in its own regard. Harvey led you to the living room, politely asking you to take a seat on the plush couch next to him. He was still quieter than usual, like there was something he wanted to say at the tip of his tongue but he was afraid of it. The still environment made you feel out of place, attempts of conversation dying in the back of your throat. You were waiting for him to make the first step.Â
Harvey sat contemplating the right things to say. He couldnât exactly start off with âNever talk to Bruce, my best friend againâ. That was too possessive for a four going on five month relationship. He needed a proper segway for this conversation.Â
âDo you like him?â Perfect! The wrong choice of words, classic Harvey.Â
You perked up at the sound of his voice, âLike who?â
âBruceâŠDo you like him?â he pressed onÂ
A pause, you needed to think. Bruce was Harveyâs friend for a while. To you the man always seemed kind and a good friend to Harvey, he never displayed any negative traits, so you guess you did like him to some degree.Â
He was so tense, shoulders stiff, bated breath awaiting your response
 âUm, yes I do I guess,â you responded with a slight grin.Â
âAnd what do you like about him?â He questionedÂ
You hesitated to give a response, searching for the right answer. âHeâs kind. Always makes me feel welcome during social events. I can see why the two of you are good friends.â A solid response, but Harvey wanted more from you. He needed more doubt and reassurance. He craved it
âDo you like him more than me?âÂ
You laughed. Caught completely off guard by his question but Harvey wasnât smiling, his face was straight, separated from any emotion he felt deep down in the moment. Youâve never seen him like this before. The change was bizarre, scary even.Â
You shifted, adjusting yourself on the couch maneuvering closer to him.Â
âWhy would I like him more-,â your explanation was cut off by your ringtone.Â
It didnât take long for Harvey to guess who was calling.Â
He didnât want to be in the room as you talked to Bruce. âYou should answer your new boyfriend,â he said before making his way to the bedroom.Â
Harvey shrugged his tie loose lazily. Undoing your careful work without any care. He knew he was wrong for making assumptions, friendship overlaps were bound to occur in the same social circle, he had no reason to be upset. But did it have to be him? Bruce was always determined to get what he wanted. A merger? Done. New car? Done. Harveyâs college girlfriend? Done. Harveyâs (ex) girlfriend of 3 years? Done. A repeated affair since the beginning of their relationship.Â
It was possible he was reading too much into the situation. But if it wasnât clear enough Harvey would make it crystal clear that you were his.Â
Coming up in the next chapter:
âHarvey youâre right. I think I am interested in [Name]â
I felt there was a lack of Harvey Dent pre accident fics and decided to write something lol.
