Seventeen then, eighteen now

I never had much of a chance to be young

and childish

and adventurous during my youth,

but now as seventeen comes upon me

I feel I have been hanging off a cliff.

Holding onto a rope so lightly from how I was blind and naive to think this would last,

but as the last year of my childhood comes knocking,

I finally wake up from my childish slumber and hold onto that rope of tender age

hoping to never let go,

to climb back up that cliff

and heal what I once never had.

Alas,

I was still ignorant,

time could not freeze, I realise

and there and gone eighteen greets me with a cold and dreaded hand,

I take it

I know I have no choice,

it is either that or death.

And I know that this life may be dreadful at times,

but there is so much to live for,

so much I want to see and do,

to enjoy my favourite seasons of rain and gloom,

and read books that I perhaps will never finish,

to watch movies

be with friends

and …

live.

So now I greet eighteen in return with an assured hand,

still holding onto that rope

but with only one hand now with blisters from my unknown strength,

ready to fall from the cliff

and away from my youth to never return,

but to may-haps get flashes of it,

like a coloured prism.

alicent thought she was doing a good thing by sending daeron to oldtown. in a way, she was right. he’s considered a good boy by most everyone who knows him. what we’ve seen on screen shows him to be kind and considerate as well. but it’s clear that he was raised by a cruel and mercurial man who treats him as nothing more than a dynastic tool, in much the same way that otto viewed alicent. he is truly his mother’s son and that is the great tragedy of it all.
