When recovering alcoholics avoid alcohol, is that avoidance? When people with celiac disease avoid gluten, is that avoidance? You’re supposed to avoid things that are toxic to you. It’s healthy to avoid things that are toxic to you.

Therapists only discourage avoidance if you’re avoiding things that are good/necessary.

People who emotionally abuse you are not good or necessary. They’re toxic.

My therapist’s refrain is “avoiding avoidable suffering”. Husbandthing and I lie like rugs when we need to and our mental health is so much better for it.

For reals- avoidance can have its problems of course- but frankly I’ll take a good dose of avoidance over ‘subjecting yourself to high levels of stress with toxic relatives.’ Just because you’re related does not mean you owe them a moment of your time. It’s one thing if they are loving kind wonderful people who you genuinely need to make time for- but mean spirited people who have hurt you, hate your identity, or are bigots of any sort? Yeah, you don’t owe them your time. Have a friendsgiving. Spend your time with nice people who enrich your life.
