Pauline von Metternich, was born into a Hungarian noble family in 1836. A granddaughter of the famous architect of the Congress of Europe, Klemens von Metternich, she married an Austrian diplomat—her uncle, Prince Richard von Metternich—in 1856. As a diplomat’s wife, she spent much time in Paris, and became a close friend of the Empress Eugénie in the court of Emperor Napoleon III, and spent much time traveling between Vienna and Paris. Perhaps her most significant legacy is that of her sponsorship for musicians, the most famous being Richard Wagner in Paris, and she was a key part of the efforts to get his opera Tannhäuser performed. But her support and patronage spread to Vienna as well, and many, many other composers. Her life covered the glory days of both the French and Austrian Empires during the long 19th century, finally passing away in 1921, in Vienna. I
