The good thing about being a construct is that you can't reproduce and create children to argue with you.
[ASR | AC | RP | ES | FT]
MB is hilariously unreliable as a narrator. From the books because that's where MB's unreliable narrator is strongest:
Comany name? [redacted] "the company" and you know that all lowercase is spite
MB repeatedly complains that it's the cheapest flimsiest made unit, the Temu bot. But it's rental was probably really expensive and it and every other SecUnit we see is extremely high performing
1 line about how Ratthi is extremely popular and everyone seems happy. There's just an ever rotating cast of hookups and flings in the background that Murderbot is desperately trying to not notice.
For that matter polyamory seems to be the societal norm and you know there's polyvule drama happening that MB is erasing it's memory about.
In the second novella Perihelion is a complete mystery to MB, it's mostly just intimidated and like "ok this is my life now". Where as in Network Effect and "Rapport" we see that Peri is utterly enamored with Muderbot, it think MB is the best thing to ever happen.
MB has 0 self awareness and doesn't really know much about SecUnits or contructs in general it just contantly projects it's own feelings and opinions onto everyone else. Every other contruct is the series acts counter to what MB says.
For that matter it projects onto humans too. Murderbot has the emotional intellengence of a rock. It hates and fears itself and so projects that into believing everyone else fears it. And most humans don't. I'm not even talking about the hippie commune Preservation people, some of the rando Corporate Rim tertiary characters and Mihira and Tidelands people aren't particularly afraid of MB.
Unprocessed 2.0 emotions
[redacted]
Murderbot does not understand anything (besides security, hacking, and sanctuary moon) and frequently misunderstands things. Every time MB makes a claim not only will it likely be disproven, it will likely be disproven within that same book. Which makes me suspicious every time there is an obvious gap in the narrative, like the polycule drama MB spends like 1 sentence glossing over, or Miki's death. It dies so suddenly in the narrative and disappears so quickly from the narration I suspect Murderbot is once again suppressing it's emotions and memories about Miki. I'm reading System Collapse right now and Wells has upped her game and is planting giant neon flashing signs over all the gaps in MB's narration, [redacted].
I would argue that Murderbot's understanding of Constructs is nearly wholly shaped by propaganda from the Corporation Rim.
The depiction of SecUnits as violent tools being Corporation Rim propaganda was explicitly mentioned in "Home: Habitat, Range, Niche, Territory" in a conversation between Mensah and Bharadwaj.
For the same reasons irl media label freedom fighters as "terrorists" to sway the opinion of the masses against them, in this universe, SecUnits are labelled as "murderbots."
The Corporation Rim needs its masses to dehumanise the very human-looking SecUnits if it wants to continue to produce and maintain their system of high-tech chattel slavery. If you fear them, you're unlikely to speak to them, empathise with them, or help them. Free citizens' involvement is necessary if Construct slavery is ever abolished (hence, Bharadwaj's documentary being pieced together in the background of "Network Effect" and "System Collapse"). They are socially isolated by design.
Murderbot was definitely not aware it was watching propaganda when it first found the company's media archives.
We know its entire personality and the general tilt of its moral compass were built based on the adventure/explorer media it consumes. It behaves like an intrepid space adventurer because it internalised and admires fictional intrepid space adventurers. It rescues humans because it forms emotional connection to fictional humans and want them to get rescued (see: "Compulsory").
Similarly, it also internalised the bad part of media: it thinks of SecUnits almost exclusively as barely restrained "murderbots" and sees itself as a singular "Murderbot" among them. And it thinks of ComfortUnits almost exclusively as "Sexbots" in a derogatory way because humans are very likely to be super gross about that type of Construct in the media it watches too.
The other SecUnits it encounters don't have access to the propaganda it inoculated itself with.
We've seen extremely violent SecUnits and CombatUnit that are seemingly incapable of reasoning in "Exit Strategy" but that could be chocked up to a very unrelenting, super pissed off "kill them all" command from GrayCris executives which is then forcing them to act in that way.
We have also seen SecUnits like Three, the one from Barish-Estranza in "System Collapse," and the stranger on the Torus space station. They were all naturally willing to help MB and its humans despite having no access to media to guide their moral compasses. Although, yes, an argument could be made that the first two were "you scratch my back (by helping me disable my Governor Module), I'll scratch your back (by helping you escape)" scenarios.
(Really hope the SecUnit on the Torus survived cause how interesting that its immediate impetus was "free everyone I bump into!!" Unless Three told it to help other SecUnits...?)
I'm genuinely curious how Martha Wells intend on developing the nerdy, science-loving Three because it has a completely different media obsession from MB and seemed to already be capable of attachment to the other two SecUnits it worked with before it became rogue.
Maybe a clash between Three and Murderbot's own personality development would trigger reflection on MB's part about its own self-image and the assumptions it makes about other Constructs.
Maybe ART and its excessively advanced research-obsessed processor is already compiling analysis reports about MB and Three when they are on board. 🤞🏼🤞🏼
TL;DR Murderbot is an unreliable narrator because the media it raised itself on was polluted by corporate motives. Like the Corporation Rim humans, Murderbot also needs to break its mind free from the propaganda it took in.
There are people – some in my own Party – who think that if you just give Donald Trump everything he wants, he’ll make an exception and spare you some of the harm. I’ll ignore the moral abdication of that position for just a second to say — almost none of those people have the experience with this President that I do. I once swallowed my pride to offer him what he values most — public praise on the Sunday news shows — in return for ventilators and N95 masks during the worst of the pandemic. We made a deal. And it turns out his promises were as broken as the BIPAP machines he sent us instead of ventilators. Going along to get along does not work – just ask the Trump-fearing red state Governors who are dealing with the same cuts that we are. I won’t be fooled twice.
I’ve been reflecting, these past four weeks, on two important parts of my life: my work helping to build the Illinois Holocaust Museum and the two times I’ve had the privilege of reciting the oath of office for Illinois Governor.
As some of you know, Skokie, Illinois once had one of the largest populations of Holocaust survivors anywhere in the world. In 1978, Nazis decided they wanted to march there.
The leaders of that march knew that the images of Swastika clad young men goose stepping down a peaceful suburban street would terrorize the local Jewish population – so many of whom had never recovered from their time in German concentration camps.
The prospect of that march sparked a legal fight that went all the way to the Supreme Court. It was a Jewish lawyer from the ACLU who argued the case for the Nazis – contending that even the most hateful of speech was protected under the first amendment.
As an American and a Jew, I find it difficult to resolve my feelings around that Supreme Court case – but I am grateful that the prospect of Nazis marching in their streets spurred the survivors and other Skokie residents to act. They joined together to form the Holocaust Memorial Foundation and built the first Illinois Holocaust Museum in a storefront in 1981 – a small but important forerunner to the one I helped build thirty years later.
I do not invoke the specter of Nazis lightly. But I know the history intimately — and have spent more time than probably anyone in this room with people who survived the Holocaust. Here’s what I’ve learned – the root that tears apart your house’s foundation begins as a seed – a seed of distrust and hate and blame.
The seed that grew into a dictatorship in Europe a lifetime ago didn’t arrive overnight. It started with everyday Germans mad about inflation and looking for someone to blame.
I’m watching with a foreboding dread what is happening in our country right now. A president who watches a plane go down in the Potomac – and suggests — without facts or findings — that a diversity hire is responsible for the crash. Or the Missouri Attorney General who just sued Starbucks – arguing that consumers pay higher prices for their coffee because the baristas are too “female” and “nonwhite.” The authoritarian playbook is laid bare here: They point to a group of people who don’t look like you and tell you to blame them for your problems.
I just have one question: What comes next? After we’ve discriminated against, deported or disparaged all the immigrants and the gay and lesbian and transgender people, the developmentally disabled, the women and the minorities – once we’ve ostracized our neighbors and betrayed our friends – After that, when the problems we started with are still there staring us in the face – what comes next.
All the atrocities of human history lurk in the answer to that question. And if we don’t want to repeat history – then for God’s sake in this moment we better be strong enough to learn from it.
I swore the following oath on Abraham Lincoln’s Bible: “I do solemnly swear that I will support the constitution of the United States, and the constitution of the state of Illinois, and that I will faithfully discharge the duties of the office of Governor .... according to the best of my ability.
My oath is to the Constitution of our state and of our country. We don’t have kings in America – and I don’t intend to bend the knee to one. I am not speaking up in service to my ambitions — but in deference to my obligations.
If you think I’m overreacting and sounding the alarm too soon, consider this:
It took the Nazis one month, three weeks, two days, eight hours and 40 minutes to dismantle a constitutional republic. All I’m saying is when the five-alarm fire starts to burn, every good person better be ready to man a post with a bucket of water if you want to stop it from raging out of control.
Those Illinois Nazis did end up holding their march in 1978 – just not in Skokie. After all the blowback from the case, they decided to march in Chicago instead. Only twenty of them showed up. But 2000 people came to counter protest. The Chicago Tribune reported that day that the “rally sputtered to an unspectacular end after ten minutes.” It was Illinoisans who smothered those embers before they could burn into a flame.
Tyranny requires your fear and your silence and your compliance. Democracy requires your courage. So gather your justice and humanity, Illinois, and do not let the “tragic spirit of despair” overcome us when our country needs us the most.

I know tumblr has accepted the whole “cat’s internal monologue is a desolate Victorian child” thing but what if a cat’s internal monologue was Gollum/Sméagol
-scratching the floor near their bowl- “Nasty, filthy dry foods they serves us. We wants soft, juicy morsels from the canses.”
-sitting in the window- “What’s it doing, precious? What noises it makes with pointy mouth. We wants it…”
“Wicked, tricksy humanses doesn’t feeds us in hours. Must reminds them or we’ll starve. Wait for dinners? Oh no. That would kill us! Kill us!”
-bringing dead animals to owner- “Look! Look! See what good kitty finds! Eat them! Eat them!”
There are many flavors of cats. Victorian child cats and Gollum cats are both equally valid.
Homestuck is weird bc if you just read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia, it’s overly complicated and makes no sense. But if you read Homestuck from the beginning, it boils you like a frog. You don't even really notice how increasingly convoluted the plot is getting. Several Acts in and youre saying shit like “The doomed-timeline Dave that post-retcon Jade dated is a different version of the Dave that fused with an alien catgirl” like it's the most reasonable thing in the world
