This jellyfish makes glowing proteins previously unknown to science

Discovery could help researchers create a new generation of fluorescent probes

In 2017, Nathan Shaner and his colleagues found something unusual in the blue-green waters off Heron Island. As the group of scientists snorkeled the reefs surrounding the coral cay on the southern end of Australia’s Great Barrier Reef, one spotted a strange-looking jellyfish in the water. The researcher netted it and brought it back to the boat. When the scientists took a closer look, they noticed that the creature’s translucent body was shot through with luminous lines of blue.

The team wasn’t looking for jellies, but Shaner—an optical probe developer at the University of California, San Diego—collected the animal anyway. “Just on a whim, we said, ‘Well, it’s kind of blue, let’s take it home,’” he says.

Now, Shaner and his team have identified five fluorescent proteins in the body of the jellyfish previously unknown to science. The discovery may lead to new techniques for exploring how genes are expressed in cells, and potentially the brightest green fluorescent protein tag ever.

So…a couple of months ago I attempted to make a Adventure Zone fan animatic based on the track “Roswell” by Griffin Mcelroy. Due to editing hell, poor microphone quality, etc, I left the files for this thing to catch dust on my desktop. This is essentially the rough cut of what I had produced.

The main thing missing is me singing the actual lyrics because I’m too embarrassed by my voice/audio quality to try to splice that in. Character designs based on the graphic novel (aside from one character in particular lol.)

“A Shadow Over Pinewood” is a rogue-like monster hunting horror quest, presented here as a short adventure for 10th level characters that builds upon the popular format found in “100 Monster Hunts”. This adventure is expected to take around 8 hours to complete, however this may vary, depending on the choices and actions made by you, the players, and the creature itself! How you ask? Because this creature is no mere beast, but an ever-changing, intelligent monstrosity capable of assailing you at every turn, and actively adapting to your tactics. Environmental effects, a short time frame and constant tension are all factors you should consider, should you wish to emerge from the mysterious fog with your sanity intact… So, are you ready to become monster hunters? Or will your choices and actions force you instead to become the hunted? Maybe a stupid idea, but maybe it already exists

You start a game of DnD with a blank character sheet. Your DM has them all. You only discover stats and things as they become relevant. 

Like, “I rolled 7 on my constitution check” “You get a +2 bonus so that’s a 9.”  *Hurriedly marking it down*

Or 

“I would like to ask the innkeeper if there is anything weird going on in the area” “Dragonborn are rare in these parts, so she is suspicious at your approach.” “Wait I’m a DRAGONBORN?!?”

It would be absolute chaos but for a one-shot I feel it would be fun. Maybe all the characters have amnesia and they have to figure out what they can do from scratch.

It’s not D&D, exactly, but Alas Vegas is a RPG where the characters dig themselves out of shallow graves at the edge of the city and have to figure out who they are and what’s going on.

Notable for: instead of rolling dice, you play blackjack with tarot cards; the position of GM rotates every act so even the GM won’t know everything that’s going on (unless they read ahead where they’re told not to); you gain skills with flashbacks to your former life where you remember a little bit about who you are; you play blackjack with tarot cards
