she likes to smile. perhaps it’s because her mouth was sewn in a curve, for when even she frowns, there is a slight curl of her lips. and she sits like a child, kicking her legs under a frilly skirt with rainboots and striped stockings. “ i like this a lot, THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS. ” but she isn’t watching the movie - she’s holding a book. and she holds the book up, flipping to one of the pages. “ i like sally. she looks like me. ”

Her smile is what cause Anastasia’s attention, it was such genuine happiness. It was infectious, and Ana found herself smiling too. “It’s a great story, have you seen the movie?” She noticed the stitches, but her expression never changed. “Sally is the best character if you ask me, it’s nice to see people like us in things.” The most she could relate to was a bird in Harry Potter.

“  …  the ANGELICAL exhibit highlights the more  . . .  religious and mythological aspects of artwork  …  but are there any SPECIFIC pieces or exhibits in the museum that would  …  interest you ?? ”

“Oh, I love the mythological pieces. It’s always amazing how so many cultures can have their own perspective on similar creatures. Although the look of angels in artworks doesn’t vary that much, does it?”

“I will not be offended if you deny my question - but what are you?” He felt empathy towards all, but could never truly understand the struggles of being something other then human. “My particular faith allows marriage, although I am widowed.” Basia had made his path clearer, and brighter. But through his loss of her, he had been blessed with an angel. “Now that sounds like a lonely life.” 

“Oh of course, I’m a phoenix. The myths portray us as birds, but we rarely take that form,” she explained. Unfortunately, the process of changing her form was painful and disorienting. She was intrigued that he was married before, clearly she didn’t know as much about religious rules as she thought. “It’s been lonely and not,” a sad smile spread across her features. “I’m always reborn somewhere new. New places to see, new people to love...I understand your feeling of loss. It’s hard to go on knowing that the one you love hasn’t.” She stopped counting the ones she had loved and lost a couple thousand years ago.

“Picturing you with a pair of fiery wings doesn’t exactly hurt.” Snow replied, bringing his drink back to his lips. “Sounds like it–would be nice to be spared the growth pains. All those awkward stages. Ya must be awfully wise or… really bored by now.” Hell, maybe a combination. “I am common. Death has a way with things, it isn’t unheard of for it to produce a reaper in another manner, but I don’t know much about the specifics. There are just so many of us.”

“Well I’ll let you in on a little secret, I actually can turn into a bird if I need to. It isn’t so fun,” she made a face of distaste, but laughed anyways. “I think it’s a bit of both. I’ve learned a lot in my life, and somehow humans still find ways to surprise me. Were you around for the invention of the computer? That was a great moment to witness.” Humans had always fascinated her, the things they came up with and the things they fought for. “If it makes you feel any better, you’re the first I’ve met. That I know of. I’m not entirely sure I have a soul, maybe I don’t and that’s how I’ve avoided you all for so long. Is that what you come for, the soul?”

He shrugged while wearing that charming smirk, “More or less.” As a reaper, he didn’t exactly sit down to cake and coffee with a soul–just got to the delivery part. Anastasia’s explanation was a fascinating one, Snow held onto each word and realized the complexities once she had finished. “Not boring at all. I’m happy to learn–and that is seriously interesting. Here I thought you just laid an egg and bam.” Snow chuckled to show that he was merely teasing the phoenix. “Nah. We’re created by Death, forces of nature from the earth’s core to the stars above, most of us anyway.”

“Oh, do I look like that much of a bird to you?” she joked. Although she could take that form, it took a lot of energy and focus. She typically saved that for emergencies, anyways. “But no, there’s no hatching involved. We have something in common there though, I guess neither of us has had a childhood. I really just die and get reborn to my young adult self. It’s the best form of anti-aging, you know.” Anastasia was surprised at how easy it was to joke with him, most people she spoke to in her life thought these things were too daunting and they rather not hear about it. “Only most of you? Are you outside that group?”

“When democracy was created.” His eyebrows rose as he repeated the phrase, the words feeling strange from his lips. Clement had not been able to place Anastasia at a particular age, but he never dreamed she predated the birth of his savior. “I can’t imagine having to hide my life for so long. Nor can I imagine having lived then, and now. As for me, I am a simple priest.”

“There are a few perks to what I am,” she simply shrugged. His profession caught her attention, she always admired faith but she wasn’t sure of her own views. Considering the nature of her life. “A noble path, but isn’t it a lonely one?” She had no idea, really, she just always assumed. “Oh, hiding wasn’t that hard, if things became messy, I had an easy way of starting over.”

“No need to apologize, I highly doubt the two were unrelated in any way.” Anastasia looked young, but it had been foolish for him to presume she was human like him. “You are wise beyond the years that you appear. Have you always been a lawyer?” 

“Oh no, being a lawyer is new for me, honestly,” she laughed. The idea that she was wiser than her appearance was comforting, considering how old she was. “I did get to visit my original home of Athens when democracy was created though. It’s still so strange to say things like that, most of my life, statements like that were dangerous to admit. And what is it you do for a living?”

The evening was shaping up to be even better than expected. He did enjoy good company. “Aw, not so much, I find the deeds honorable. Someone’s gotta do it.” More like something. “Oh snap… that is a surprise. I can’t say I’ve ever met a pheonix before.” She had drawn him in all the more. He was terribly curious. “Without a doubt. Y’all should work on that. Get to pro-creating. ‘got nothing to lose after all.”

“Very true, and I’m sure it lets you meet so many interesting people.” Ana liked talking to other immortals more than anyone else. As fascinating as humans were, they never really understood most of her feelings on the world. A laugh escaped her at the mention of her kind procreating. “From what I’ve heard, it’s not that simple. We tend to wander a lot, not by choice. Every time we die, our ashes scatter to a new place. It’s a long story, something about a new phoenix being born when two die close to each other, a small part of their ashes combine to make a third...It’s boring, I know. I guess whatever made the rules didn’t want too many immortals running around,” she shrugged a bit, realizing she’d been rambling. “What about reapers? It’s hard to picture a toddler doing your job. Are you born that way?”

“That is a relief, but quite a time consuming job.” Stel chuckled to himself. Being a cop was no walk in the park, quick and simple, but he wouldn’t have it any other way. “We’ll keep a positive outlook on the evening. Are you off to enjoy a party or the bar? I should catch an a glance at a firework or two once the hour hits.”

“Trust me, I have nothing put time and a good cause to put it towards,” she tilted her head. With the gift she had, she didn’t think she had any right to do less than give her life for a cause. “I wasn’t sure yet, I don’t know the area well so I was going to walk around and see what was available. But you recommend the fireworks?”

“We’re fortunate to have a seasoned professional in our sheriff.” He thought fondly of his companion as he spoke. At her second question he chewed his lip, unsure how much of the truth to divulge. “It’s hard to tell. The first attacks were anti-supernatural but the second round was certainly by someone who has powers, or access to them.”

“Sounds like the second could have been retaliation,” she thought out loud. It took her a moment to realize she was coming up with too many theories. “Sorry, I’ve seen a lot of wars. I guess I can overthink things sometimes. I’m sure they were all random.”

“Quite literal.” Snow snickered, his warm honey gaze casually falling on the other as he listened to what was shared. “Fellow immortal? Cheers to that.” He raised his beer bottle and made a gesture in the air which matched his words before taking a short sip. “For sure, all these mortals are in such a hurry, but we can remind them to hit the breaks. Enjoy the scenery. Nice to meet you, I’m snow. Resident reaper at your service.”

“In a way, I guess I am.” If you could still count routinely dying as being immortal. She smiled and lifted her glass in turn, a small chuckle escaping her lips. “A reaper? Is that as dark of a job as I imagine it is? It’s nice to meet you too, I’m Anastasia. Since we’re sharing, I’m a phoenix. If you’ve met any others, I’d love to hear about it, we’re pretty rare I think.”

“That’s how I feel.” Snow agreed. “Everyone should get a good start. I am just one guy, though, and despite what went down whatever kiss I give won’t just be a throw away. ‘should be special, like ya said.” He chuckled toward what the stranger said, “I’ve got all the time in the world, but I’m all about the moment, not hitting fast-forward.”

“Exactly,” Ana agreed with living in the moment. “I don’t know if you meant that literally, having all the time in the world, because I do too. It made me learn to appreciate every moment instead of just rushing through everything. I’m Anastasia by the way, I don’t think I ever mentioned that.”

“ it’s OBVIOUS, isn’t it? ” quinn’s tone was bitter, as always, eyes looking into hers for a brief few seconds. they were the color of stormclouds during a pink sunset, swirling purple hues that seemed endless. and they could either resembles those of a scared animal, or could be identical to shards of glass, ready to tear into whomever looked into them. “ …but thanks. ” they did take pride in their work, at least. and they did feel something good when their customer was happy with what they came up with. “ the warm colors complement your skin nicely. ”

“Only a bit, but don’t worry. I’m sure most of your clients are too busy being in pain to notice,” she admitted. She tried to say it in a lighter tone, having noticed the artist’s bitter one. Talking about their work seemed like a safer topic, no one should make someone putting permanent designs on their body angry. “I’m glad to hear that, I’ve always admired the bird. Myths have always made it sound so inspiring and graceful.” So it was technically bragging...she wasn’t saying she was exactly like the myths anyways.

“I’m afraid there have been a few disruptions. A holiday party namely. Tainted drinks with horrible side effects, and explosion. It left one person critically injured.” Clement had no desire to frighten the lawyer, but he felt compelled to speak the truth. The town was less of a perfect safe haven then it appeared on paper. “I can assure you our law enforcement is the finest you can find. They’ll get to the bottom of it. “

“I’m sure the law enforcement here is doing everything they can. It’s a whole new battlefield for them now, I think.” The news didn’t seem so bad until the mention of an explosion, Ana tried not to cringe from the thought of so much fire. “Those all sound like extreme acts, do you think it could be people who might be against the large number of supernaturals around?”

“Aren’t you lucky?” The reaper chuckled. “I’m not so surprised though. You certainly are deserving of a special start to the new year.”

Considering his answer, Snow chose to be more forthright. “I thought I might, but… they decided to leave me in the cold. Not the best finish to 2016.”

“I like to think I have been, yes.” Ana spoke with a raised brow. “Oh? Well, I think we all are.”

She didn’t know the story there, but she felt bad for him. “Not the best time of year to be left alone, is it? I’m sorry to hear that. At least you still have a bit of time to make the best of the year, or just start fresh in the new one.”

“Yes.” He’d considered those outside his parents and siblings who would receive his belongings. Stel was an easy choice, but he was hesitant to put Rosie in a place so soon. And yet, if he lost his life sooner rather then later, he hoped to leave her something. Clement nodded as she detailed what went into a will. “No rush, of course. Recent events in the town have me concerned.” Too much had gone wrong in the time since his arrival. 

“I’m sorry, recent events?” Ana had been so busy moving that she hardly had the chance to look up the news, not that she had expected to find anything though. She thought this would be a peaceful town, but Clement’s words made her doubt that. “May I ask what happened? It must have been something serious for you to come here now.”
