As with any play, in the first 5- 10 minutes, it is the responsibility of the cast and crew to whisk you away to the era and inner personas of the characters. There will be cringing! But after a few, when the music sets in, and the kolehiyala Miriam girls start to sing about wanting to get ligaw by a La Sallista, that’s when the entertainment begins.
The play is set in 1968. This being the time of our Papas, Mamas, Titos and Titas, but you will find many a scene that you can relate to. #kilegmoments
Music is by Ed Gatchalian. I specifically enjoyed the numbers of kolehiyalas and the housewives. You will be delightfully surprised, I promise.

Just spent an enjoyable afternoon watching an original Filipino musical at meralco theatre. It's about the ateneo de Lasalle rivalry.

Have you watched RIVALRY - The Ateneo-La Salle Musical?
I was able to watch it last week with my best friend from Ateneo and sister from La Salle and we surely enjoyed the show! You don't have to be a blue or green student to enjoy it. *points to self* :))
The musical is set in the 1960's so expect a lot of old school cheesy lines about school, love, friendship and family. My favorite part of the musical is the love triangle between an Atenean and a LaSallian. I never knew that their rivalry originated from .... Oops, I might reveal too much! ;) So go and watch it during it's last few runs at the Meralco Theatre on the following dates:
MAR 1 (THU) 8PM
3 (SAT) 3PM
4 (SUN) 3PM
7 (WED) 8PM
9 (FRI) 8PM
10 (SAT) 8PM
Congratulations to ATHENA TIBI (Reena) for the wonderful performance!
*Good thing I was able to take this photo secretly* hoho :))
Why a musical about a school rivalry? Here's a peek inside the minds of the creators of Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle the Musical.
Basketball in Theater? Rivalry: The DLSU vs ADMU The Musical
More in its story, Rivalry reveals interesting plots about various aspects of love - love for family, love for friends, and love for romance too. I won't divulge further details about it, but just imagine seeing the two iconic college teams who usually raves for stiff basketball bout - De La Salle University (DLSU) and the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) beyond the basketball court, further it extends to the social strings of our lives- family, friendship, and love. How far should our fanaticism to these institutions could affect us? Labels, colors that separates or probably confines us to certain limits is definitely not right. The stage play would also remind us that beyond our differences or stereotypical judgement, anyone can be considered heroes.

Honestly, Filipinos choose to watch movies than sit through a 2 hour theater play. Maybe it’s because they find it hard to watch it or just because they have seen a better version of the play overseas. Rarely do original stage plays create a big buzz around the metro but “Rivalry” just might change all that.
The music, in my opinion, was excellent. I found my foot tapping to the beat, especially with some scenes featuring really upbeat music. The first two scenes did this well; the energy was maintained rather well, with comedic jabs at 'the other school' a prominent feature in the play. I thought that this accurately portrayed campus life even to this day, as my batch-mates and I have had our share of poking fun at 'the other school'. The singing was top-notch, especially from the main Ateneo and La Salle leads, who were singingwhile engaging in physical exercise in one scene! I was impressed.
The musical’s original sounds make it such a lovely play to listen to. The costumes are impressive, and despite the playful heckling and banters present in the musical, the play remains light. Both schools are presented with fair stereotypes—funny, but not insulting at the same time. The play also had witty lines and a few surprises.
I ask my patients, who are UAAP players from the Ateneo, why they get too aggressive when playing against DLSU. "It's in the blood" na daw. It's just the way it has been.
Last month, I got the answer I needed when I watched Rivalry: Ateneo-La Salle Musical. I laughed so hard it hurts like being thrown mineral water bottles!
The family and I were entertained to the highest level: the plot was not too complicated and was easy to understand; the performers' voices were very audible; the music was superb and golly, their voices are so good!
Hands down, this original musical is entertaining. But besides entertainment, I was inspired... Yehey!!! Filipinos doing world class musicals! Congratulations to all, but especially to the lyricist because I think that the lyrics of each song form a seamless tapestry.
Watched #Rivalry with @innayenko earlier. Go watch it, Ateneans and Lasallians. ☺ (Taken with instagram)
Youtube sensation, Kevin Vitug, of the "Shit Spoiled Filipino Teenagers Say" fame at "Rivalry"! Thank you for watching!
