just finished reading the IT book. chapters 12-23 i listened to as an audiobook.

i don’t think i can overstate just how bad the sewer scene really is. from what i’ve seen, it seems like it’s become a kinda joke in the fandom, but i think we’re overdue for a genuine conversation about how perverted and disgusting the entire book is (and possibly king’s other works too; i wouldn’t know since i haven’t read them).

when i was listening to the scene at first, i felt the usual disgust that i knew i would feel, but the longer i let it linger, the more emotion took over. i’d like to be clear in that none of those kids could properly consent to what happened, but the one who sticks out to me most is eddie.

he’s the first one, and he doesn’t want to do it. when beverly tells him what she wants him to do, he backs away and says that he can’t. in the text, it literally says (though i’m paraphrasing): “but there was a part of her that believed he could” and that she felt a “hardness”—aka, he wanted it because his body reacted to it.

and i’m not blaming beverly for this necessarily. they’re all eleven after all. but it’s hard to read that, and also the bit about eddie crying during, and come to any conclusion other than that it was an assault. there’s some (not much at all, but a pinch) of deniability with the others, but the entire segment with eddie was especially vile to me.

i’m not ashamed to admit that it upset me. that thinking about it made me cry. because shit like that, especially in this day and age with everything we know about the world, is inherently upsetting. on a character level, reading eddie be assaulted, sandwiched in between the abuse he faced from his mother, It, and myra before his death, is horrible.

but on a real-world level, stephen king is the real villain of the novel. everyone who allowed that scene, and so many others, to make it to publication should feel ashamed.

suddenly i understand why the people who exclusively only watch the x-men movies don’t read the comics because what do you mean jean grey (starting at 18) gets thrown into a love pentagon (mostly a triangle to be fair), gets kidnapped multiple times, almost dies multiple times, watches her team almost die multiple times, fucking dies, is reborn thanks to a strange cosmic entity, gets thrown into two more separate love triangles, thinks her boyfriend and all her friends died, gets gaslit into believing she is reliving memories of an ancestor, gets gaslit into believing she is that “ancestor”, gets gaslit into forgetting her friends and love of her life, gets gaslit into believing ororo is her FUCKING SLAVE???, fucking kills a guy, gets possessed by the aforementioned cosmic entity (evil edition), consumes an entire star and consequentially mass murders a whole civilization, goes back to normal for five seconds, gets proposed to, gets tried in space for genocide, gets possessed by the cosmic entity (evil edition) again, and sacrifices herself. and all of that happens in the span of six years.
