probably time for this story i guess but when i was a kid there was a summer that my brother was really into making smoothies and milkshakes. part of this was that we didn't have AC and couldn't afford to run fans all day so it was kind of important to get good at making Cool Down Concoctions.
we also had a patch of mint, and he had two impressionable little sisters who had the attitude of "fuck it, might as well."
at one point, for fun, this 16 year old boy with a dream in his eye and scientific fervor in heart just wanted to see how far one could push the idea of "vanilla mint smoothie". how much vanilla extract and how much mint can go into a blender before it truly is inedible.
the answer is 3 cups of vanilla extract, 1/2 cup milk alternative, and about 50 sprigs (not leaves, whole spring) of mint. add ice and the courage of a child. idk, it was summer and we were bored.
the word i would use to describe the feeling of drinking it would maybe be "violent" or perhaps, like. "triangular." my nose felt pristine. inhaling following the first sip was like trying to sculpt a new face. i was ensconced in a mesh of horror. it was something beyond taste. for years after, i assumed those commercials that said "this is how it feels to chew five gum" were referencing the exact experience of this singular viscous smoothie.
what's worse is that we knew our mother would hate that we wasted so much vanilla extract. so we had to make it worth it. we had to actually finish the drink. it wasn't "wasting" it if we actually drank it, right? we huddled around outside in the blistering sun, gagging and passing around a single green potion, shivering with disgust. each sip was transcendent, but in a sort of non-euclidean way. i think this is where i lost my binary gender. it eroded certain parts of me in an acidic gut ecology collapse.
here's the thing about love and trust: the next day my brother made a different shake, and i drank it without complaint. it's been like 15 years. he's now a genuinely skilled cook. sometimes one of the three of us will fuck up in the kitchen or find something horrible or make a terrible smoothie mistake and then we pass it to each other, single potion bottle, and we say try it it's delicious. it always smells disgusting. and then, cerimonious, we drink it together. because that's what family does.

Michael Collins. He died just last year His fellow astronauts said he had a great sense of humor. He went on to head the Air and Space Museum at The Smithsonian. He was asked how he felt about going to the moon. He was like “what are ya talking about? I’m not going to the moon. Those two are”. Her also joked about how no one would remember who he was.
He’s the one who told Armstrong when he was contemplating his first words “if you had any balls at all you’d scream ‘Dear God what the fuck is that’ and then cut the mic”
He’s also the Farthest Man - that is, the human being who has been the farthest away from earth
We watched the whole first season of Invincible last night and I’d actually first heard of it in the context of people positively FLIPPING over the gore to the point they thought it was obscene and fetishistically excessive violence. Now I’m thinking those were people who don’t watch a lot of horror, for one, but what really struck me is they actually do in fact reserve the blood and gore for when it’s narratively important?
Sillier more comedic stuff gets so much grosser. Venture Brothers totally has more severed limbs and decapitations going on throughout its run but I guess it was framed as “funnier.” which is fine, I also put comedic gore in stuff, but invincible plays it for actual grave drama and audiences seem to find that so much more uncomfortable? That feels kind of backwards. Like shouldn’t people be more bothered when messy violence is played off as inconsequential fun?
When you play it for humor, you invite people emotionally distance themselves from the horrific mayhem before them. When you play it for drama, you challenge them to process the carnage as they would if they were there themselves.
I was just about to say something like this. Excessive gore for comedy doesn’t hit as hard because the characters dying don’t feel like people, they feel like balloons of fruit juice and organs. You don’t feel bad when characters die for comedy because they don’t feel like characters.
Brock slaughtering a bunch of mooks isn’t horrifying because those mooks attacked first and they don’t receive any sympathy.
But Invincible has several scenes where random people are humanized and sympathized with, only to die seconds later, and their gory deaths are played for drama. And that hits harder because you wanted them not to die, and you hear and see the characters around them reacting in horror.
Invincible trying to save that woman, holding her hand through a collapsing building, then after the smoke clears he’s just holding a severed arm is horrifying because he was trying to save her life, and the fact he couldn’t immediately traumatizes him.
Exactly! But I’d seen reactions to it like it was “torture porn” or just too brutal to be “fun.” I feel like there’s a type of media reviewer that kind of responds as though it’s a flaw or a problem if they’re made to feel too angry at the villains or too sad for the hero’s losses or too disturbed by the reality of death, even if they knew ahead of time they were sitting down to watch something that’s supposed to be serious and intense? Like even when they hear a show or a movie is dark and tragic they’re still thinking it’s going to be in this easily digestible, safe and sanitary superwholock kind of way. I appreciate that this series and to a lesser (but still very good???) extent Doom Patrol are completely antithetical to all those Disney Marvel movies where we know the zany supervillains and exploding robots and giant monsters have to be killing swathes of people, but the narrative mostly glosses it over to focus on the Memeable Banter and marketable sexymans, who also ought to be getting eviscerated and dismembered a whole lot more but always, somehow, just barely dodge it in time for another “well that happened!”
Are there guys on tumblr who also think the phrase “pronouns in bio” is an edgy burn/comeback or is that just a twitter thing?
Yeah if you don’t know what I’m talking about, if a twitter rightie sees something they disagree with, for instance something like “be kind to people,” they will check to see if the OP includes their gender in their profile, and if so, the rightie will say “pronouns in bio” as if pointing this out is in itself an epic mic drop
