Stop Trump’s Plan for BLM to “Maximize Timber Production” in Oregon

The Trump administration is planning to revise the Resource Management Plans (RMPs) that guide the Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) management of 2.5 million acres of Western Oregon’s public forests.

The Trump led proposal would undo decades of hard fought conservation work and put large swaths of mature and old growth forests on the chopping block. These forests provide critical habitat for endangered species and sequester incredible amounts of carbon. They are also naturally more fire resilient than the monocrop plantations that the BLM would replace them with. BLM’s Notice of Intent makes it clear that the purpose of these revisions is to increase industrial logging to “the maximum productive capacity of the lands”. This would mean the elimination of the last stands of mature and old growth on BLM lands and could lead to the extinction of endangered species like the Northern Spotted Owl and Marbled Murrelet.

the european turtle-dove is a member of the columbidae family (pigeons and doves) that breeds over a wide spread of the southwestern palearctic, but winters in northern sub-saharan africa. these iconic birds are more slender than most other doves, and they are often identified by the black-and-white patch on the sides of their necks. in the united kingdom, the birds’ population has decreased by 93% since 1994; this is commonly attributed to a change in farming practices that left the doves with fewer weed seeds and shoots to feed on. additionally, overhunting of the doves has led to population decline; a 2001 study found that between two and four million birds were shot in malta, cyprus, france, italy, spain, and greece. a hunting ban introduced in 2021 by the european commission in france, spain, and portugal had by 2024 resulted in a 25% increase in the western european breeding population.

Things To Keep In Mind When Collecting Roadkill

First and foremost do your research into your local wildlife laws to see if roadkill is legal to pick up in your area, if you will need a specific permit or license to do so, or if it is illegal.

Things You Will Need:

Car (makes transportation easier, widens the search range)*

Plastic Bags

Plastic Bucket/Bin (to aid in protecting your vehicle from unwanted leaks)*

Gloves (latex, vinyl, etc)

Skinning/Dismembering Tools (if you plan to work on the remains on location)*

*Optional

Safety Precautions:

If you are driving: Always follow proper road safety practices when pulling over and exiting your vehicle on roadsides.

If you are on foot: Be aware of your surroundings at all times, avoid turning your back to oncoming traffic.

If you are picking roadkill up at night or in an area with low light: Wear Hi-Vis reflective clothing.

If possible, don’t pick up roadkill alone. It’s not only helpful to have a second pair of hands to move that dead body, but it is also helpful to have a second pair of eyes to act as a traffic spotter as you do so.

If you are only planning to take part of the animal, move it off and away from the roadway before working on it.

Salvageability

Take note of the appearance of the animal.

If you are looking and legally able to take the hide, check the body over for trauma. Generally if you see any flesh, it may not be worth the time and effort it takes to tan the pelt if it is too mangled. Additionally if the roadkill is not fresh or has been exposed to high temperatures, hot summer heat for instance, the pelt will run a higher risk of slipping after being tanned.

If you are going for bones, feel around. If things seem shifty or loose inside, they may be broken.

Keep in mind that animals get “hit clean” all the time and may not show any physical signs of injury until you open them up. Because of this, picking up roadkill and getting something salvageable can be largely hit and miss.

The fucked up sculpture I bought from one of my favorite artists got delivered today hee hee ho ho

Isn't she gorgeous? It's a taxidermy of a fox depicted mid-skinning, with the musculature and blood depicted with the use of glittering rhinestones. I've been obsessed with this sculpture since the artist posted it years ago, and always hoped it would be for sale. So when it popped up for sale I immediately had to nab it.

In the "lungless salamander" family. Salamanders in this family breathe by absorbing oxygen through the lining of the mouth and throat (bucco-pharyngeal respiration), as well as absorbing oxygen through the skin.

I SAW WOLVERINES TODAY!

This was my first time seeing the closest I could get to real wolverines, even though they may not be the real living and breathing things, they once were. Even in death and preservation they are magnificently beautiful and wonderful animals. I feel extremely lucky and grateful to have been able to see them at least once in my life now and hopefully soon I will see more, I cannot begin to express the joy I felt seeing them and knowing there was TWO in such close proximity to me and open to the public. I wanted to share my pictures and video I got of them today for such a special moment for me
