I get this feeling, like a lot! I think that things really went downhill when we stopped separating fandom from cannon. Like wdym I have to only ship what’s cannon/need for my ships to become cannon?? This is my little fantasy land where I can do whatever, I’m not in the writers’ room

I'm sorry it's been almost a week and I'm still not over this like

imagine, if you will, that you are mel king.

your parents are dead. you were an orphan by the time you were in college. the only person you have in your entire life is your sister, for whom you are now solely responsible.

you spend YOUR ENTIRE ADULT LIFE doing nothing but working towards being a doctor and caring for your sister. you have no friends because you have no free time, or so you tell yourself (it's also because making friends is hard for you but you might not realize that yet). you have no hobbies outside of ones your sister is into because then it's something you can do together. you eat the food she wants to eat and go to the places she likes to go to and watch her favorite movie with her 164 times. you don't watch your favorite movie. maybe you don't even HAVE a favorite movie. literally every day is study/work, go home to take care of becca, sleep. every day.

and then finally you get her into a residential program that she likes and you finally have ONE TINY SMIDGEN of free time (even though you are in medical residency, which means you are bare minimum working 12 hour shifts and probably regularly pull 24+ hour shifts). this is the VERY FIRST TIME you can actually try to have friends of your own.

AND YOU SUCK AT IT.

like, yeah, your boss is mostly nice. your coworkers are cordial. no one's being MEAN to you. but they're also not really listening to you or paying attention to you outside of normal coworker interactions and they literally just walk off in the middle of conversations without even giving you a heads up that they're leaving so you're still talking into the open air like a weirdo

this one guy. this ONE GUY who asks you questions and jokes with you and keeps asking if you're okay (which means he notices that you're not okay) and keeps reassuring you and complimenting you whenever you express even one (1) moment of self-doubt or upset

and like, sometimes it's hard for you to pick up nonverbal cues and tell if someone is being genuine or just polite or being nice to manipulate you, but then one of your other coworkers says that you seem to be hitting it off with him (!!) so maybe you can be friends (????) for the first time in your fucking life (???????!!!!!!)

except then he LEAVES EARLY WITHOUT SAYING GOODBYE so MAYBE NOT

but then he's back like an hour later?

but then he's gone again by the time you're off shift three hours late and then you go hang out with your sister and watch elf for the five millionth time even though you just went through a horrific trauma

and then you don't see him again for almost a year

and there are rumors about why he's gone, but you don't want to listen to them (perhaps because then you'd think badly of him and you don't want to think badly of him), but you DO talk to becca about him. maybe a lot? perhaps a disproportionately large amount considering that you spent not even a full shift with him one time months ago? and like, you still have the people in your workplace, and it's fine, but you still spend most if not all of your free time with your sister so when he comes back it's GREAT! YAAAAAAAAY!

(one of your patients asks you what you do for fun and you can only think of one activity that you like independently of your sister and it's something that you used to do. and reading, which isn't exactly a social activity. and then he knocks you over and you hit your head and your day is already not going well but that doesn't help)

but hey THE ONE GUY IS BACK and you have INSIDE JOKES that he REMEMBERED despite it having been almost a year since you first/last saw him and he MAKES SURE YOU'RE OKAY and he GETS RID OF THE COPS who are FREAKING YOU OUT and he TURNS THE LIGHTS OFF AND CLOSES THE DOOR because HE REMEMBERED WHAT YOU TOLD HIM ABOUT THE ER BEING OVERWHELMING ALMOST A YEAR AGO

so OF COURSE you're relieved when he gets assigned to take care of your sister while you're busy getting personally attacked and dissected like a bug deposed and he's great with her and respects her as a person and oh by the way it turns out she has a uti.

a uti that she got from having sex.

a uti that she got from having sex with her boyfriend.

a uti that she got from having sex with her boyfriend whom she's been dating for six fucking months and apparently everyone knew about it

EXCEPT YOU, THE PERSON WHO HAS NO HOBBIES OR RELATIONSHIPS OR LIFE OUTSIDE OF HER BECAUSE YOU HAVE SPENT YOUR ENTIRE ADULT LIFE DOING NOTHING BUT WORKING AND TAKING CARE OF HER.
